"What's in the box???" Is currently my favorite movie quote and I say it so much that my loved ones and coworkers almost alway guess when I'm about to say it. "I work in the major appliance department of a large department store so it actually happens more often than you might expect. Also, one of my coworkers and I will yell out "Soilent Green is people!" and "To Serve Man is a cookbook!" occasionally when it's slow and quiet. I hated the ending.....A jerky character decision from Justin Long that felt too contrived. How was he supposed to know that pushing her off was going to cause that to happen?

@@llamasarus1 he didn't but it showed that his character is more than willing to make the evil/immoral choice and take a chance which lines up with his other decisions throughout the movie so it actually made a lot of sense

Those are some big twists. But there's a huge swerve that you missed. It comes from a much smaller film than any on this list. The Killer Is Who? Salvage (2006) In this movie, Claire is a college student who works nights at a gas station. When she gets off work one morning, she's picked up in her boyfriend's truck by a man she's never net. After some cat and mouse stuff, the stranger kills her. Then, she wakes at the gas station. Thinking it was a dream, Claire goes on with her day. What follows is a grim version of Happy Death Day. This time, she's been alive long enough for everyone to start turning on her. For her part, Claire is scared and doesn't know what is going on. Finally cornered by the killer, again, it's revealed that Claire is actually the guy who has been killing her all this time. Turns out, the killer's final victim was Claire and he's in hell, reliving her final hours over and over.

So many people pass or downplay Identity because of the "it was all a dream/in his head" trope. But it was really well done and keeps you guessing all the way to the last minute, even after the multiple personality twist is revealed. Solid performances from most of the cast. It's one of my favorites.

My vote for “not on this list” goes to Sinister. As a horror movie junkie, I’m almost never thrown for a loop, but Sinister which starts off as a serial killer type movie only to do a complete 360 and become a supernatural horror movie was completely unexpected. That had me thrown off. But what makes Sinister such a frightening movie is that both the “real” and the “unreal” horrors are both equally terrifying.

The whole list, I was hoping to at least see Oldboy mentioned. When I got to #2, I was like : "What could they possibly bring up as #1 that is better than Oldboy?!" Man was I relieved to see it get the trophy.

I'm happy I saw this movie before I became a dad, now it's flat out unwatchable for me. It's wild to say that that films ending is more horrifying to me than nearly anything I've ever seen.

The guy who plays Adam in Saw said in an interview that he didn't know tang the body in the room was a real person. Just a life sized, realistic doll. The shock we see on Adam's face when Jigsaw stands up is real.

For me the ending of the 6th Sense is just so sad. Every time that I watch it, I just cry. Despite the sad ending, it's still a great movie.

The Sixth Sense is sad on multiple fronts, not just the ending. Imagine being a small child and not only seeing ghosts, but you see them at their most lowest point before their death. The woman in the kitchen, the little girl who was being poisoned by her mother, the teen who was shot in the back of the head….. even in his school, the schoolhouse was used for hangings, and he saw the bodies hanging from the ceiling… the heartbreaking part for me wasn’t the ending, it was right before when he told his mom he sees the dead, told her the lady who was hit by the car died and she was standing at his window in the car. I burst into tears when he said he sees his grandmother and told his mom she went to her ballet recital when his mom thought she didn’t. It was a closure I wasn’t prepared for.

So, Edward Norton TWICE played characters with some kind of multiple personality/ schizophrenia and Kevin Spacey TWICE played criminals who got the better of the authorities investigating him. The "husband kills (or seems to kill) the wife" story has been used a lot too, always with some level of amnesia or ignorance.

16:16 believe or not, this ending still traumatizes me till day 🙄 It can’t compare to Old Boy of course, but it still itching every time I recall . The feeling of hopelessness when evil gained an absolute win is haunting.

Repo Men from 2010 had a pretty good twist making you beleive the hero completed his mission until literally the last moments of the movie when you realize the bad guys won.

@@SAMTYLER1974 it was also stolen from the rock musucal Repo! The genetic opera. Both were made at the same time. Terrence the creator was going to have it released by Universal but the studio didn't want it to be a musical.

@@Soopology Where exactly am I telling people what they can or can’t ignore? I was simply stating the similarity between two films endings. Yes, I prefer Gilliam’s film but Repo Men has always been kind of a guilty pleasure as well. Otherwise you’re more than welcome to enjoy exactly what you want to watch and I’ll sit back and be more than happy to let you. But I’m entitled to state opinions here as much as I am in life. I’m not hurting anyone and if people agree or disagree then, well, that’s kinda the point of opinions. So no, Repo Men didn’t steal from Brazil in the sense of high stakes espionage but it was, no doubt, inspired by it, a point I seem to recall many critics pointing out at the time of release. I think that there's a thin line between plot twists and twist-ending. Seven is sure one of the best twist-ending movies like The Mist. Another plot-twist movie that impressed me so much that isn't on this list is The Skeleton Key. Although the movie is not very famous and the movie is quite a little bit slow-paced, It really creeps me out at the end. This movie is one of the real plot twist movies. If you haven't watched it you should try!!

Agree. There is big confusion between a "twist" which changes the scope of an entire movie, and just a single sucker-punch moment at the end of the movie. The usual suspects and the sixth sense had iconic twists. The mist and Seven were more of the other type.

For me the best part about Bodies Bodies Bodies is the way that it makes you completely believe there's a killer among them and you don't even notice throughout that they're killing each other and no-ones being offed one by one in the shadows as per the standard of these kinds of movies. A very fun flick.

Bodies x3 was fun and I honestly thought that there might have been some slasher esque killed who took out David and then they started to kill each other due to paranoia. Needless to say the actual ending was way better than my initial assumptions. I like that gen z was lambasted in a way, but not looked looked down upon throughout the film.

The Sixth Sense is one of my favorite movies. I remember when I first watched it and when the ending happened I was (like a lot of people) pretty confused but then my mom explained it to me better and I understood. Then it made me just want to watch the movie again. When I did rewatch the movie it is insane how you really never see Malcolm interact with another person other than Cole. I remember when we were watching it with my now ex stepsisters the oldest one was so mad at the wife because she seemed so horrible. Then at the very end she just felt bad for her 😂 Which that’s honestly true. She seems like kinda a bad wife but then you figure out that she’s just trying to move on from her murdered husband 😭

Psycho is another movie that I saw for the first time a little less than a year ago. It was so good and the twist was amazing. I thought it was weird that you never actually saw the mother. It reminded me of a Criminal Minds episode where a guy had multiple personalities but whenever the other personality spoke you never saw them. So the fact that you never see Norman’s mother kinda made me wonder if she was even there. And given the fact that Norman seemed to have an….interesting relationship with his mother it wouldn’t have shocked me if he had created another personality that was her. But the ending was still so good and very shocking

as someone with DID (formerly known as MPD - multiple personality disorder), i love this theory! usually i hate media that uses this disorder and further stigmatizes it but sometimes the plot idea is just too good to not let a pass.

That’s the thing with the film Psycho. You had to see it young or when it first came out. The concept has been done to death so many times that I can understand someone kinda sorta predicting/feeling out the twist at some point be cause it has been referenced and spoofed so many times. I’m however still happy that you got enjoyment out of it! It’s definitely a classic for a reason.

@@LaFlor718 Exactly. Even if I kinda figured out the ending it didn’t take away the fact that movie was a masterpiece of a film and the ending was executed extremely well. And Anthony Perkins acting (both as the more normal yet clearly disturbed Norman Bates and the psychotic, killer Norman Bates) was so good. His performance really is what sells the creepiness of the movie. Without it the whole movie wouldn’t be the iconic and creepy film it is today!

It's high time WatchMojo expanded their library and started including newer or obscure entries into their lists. Anybody who has been watching this channel for a while already knew entries such as Psycho, The 6th Sense, Planet of the Apes etc. would be on it. Some of the other darker twists include: Incendies A Pure Formality The Tenant The Machinist Orphan Mystic River Prisoners Goodnight Mommy The Uninvited Audition Chinatown Haute Tension Spider ...and many more I am not remembering now.

yeah i used to be a fan of the channel but ended up watching less and less before eventually unsubscribing since on some of these lists you can predict the entries if not the order based off the title of the video alone since they tend to mainly pick and order their choices based off how famous and critically acclaimed the film is so they end up with a ton of the same films appearing again and again and again. They fall into the same trap as some sites like Ranker where it's not quality or relevance that gets a movie to the top of a list but how popular it is.

The darkest plot twist in Barbarian isn't the monster- its that the monster is a baby raised in darkness who is a result of the owner kidnapping women, SA-ing them, and then having the children SA each other as well as him SA them........

depressing part is theres a few real stories like that, although the "underground" part isnt always true since those weirdos often end up viewing the whole thing as less of a incestuous sex slave harem and more of a "family". Often the presence of children as tools for extortion keeps the moms in line and once Stockholm syndrome sets in the slaves lose the will or even desire to escape making a dungeon more trouble then its worth, which if anything is even more fucked up.

The case that names it was the result of the police being so incompetent that the hostage-taker was genuinely more reassuring and basically all other cases are either the same shit or victim-blaming. There is no actual mental disorder there, at most it's a temporary reaction to appease someone dangerous and more likely it's a dismissive attack by the media at people who are too frightened to run away.

Am I the only one who didn’t find _”What’s in the box?”_ that big of a twist?! Doe had planned everything, down to the last detail…Mills & Somerset knocking on his door probably fast-tracked his plan a bit, but he allowed Mills to live- must have been for a reason! Memento was such a good movie, though predictable from the start. Leonard was never made out to be a psychopath, so someone else had to be pulling the strings. Identity is kinda underrated…I don’t think it got great reviews?! I especially loved that the kid was left in Malcolm’s mind- firstly, b/c it’s not a typical “happy ending” & second, you knew there wasn’t a sequel planned, so it ends with the murderer on the loose. In hindsight, I was pissed that I didn’t see DID coming! I was writing a paper & did a presentation on DID just before this movie came out 🤦🏻♀️

Most of these twists are amazing but I saw the 6th Sense twist a mile away. I was getting mad watching the movie, actually, saying to myself, "The twist better not be that he's dead." I mean -- he was shot at the beginning and then through the entire rest of the movie NO ONE but the kid talks to him. Come on! It was pretty obvious.

Not gonna lie but the 1st time I ever seen Planet Of the Apes, I thought he was just really upset that they blew up the Statue Of Liberty. I was so confused as to why the movie ended with this dude having an existential life crisis over a statue when there was still killer apes trying to kill him.

Going into The Sixth Sense, I knew two things about it: it was about a boy who could see dead people and there was a big plot twist at some point. I spent the whole movie trying to figure out what the twist was going to be, and when I got to the end, and there hadn't been a twist, I was really confused and disappointed. I later learned that the "plot twist" was supposed to be the revelation that the character Bruce Willis played was dead the whole time, but honestly that confused me even more, since the movie starts by showing how he died.

Momento is similar to Silent Hill 2. Both of the main protagonists, James (Silent Hill 2) and Leonard (Momento), are two amnesiac widowers who learn about the status of their respective wives. In James's case, he eventually learned that his wife died and in Leonard's case, he learns that his wife was already dead. However, they both eventually learn through a horrifying truth that THEY were responsible for killing their respective wives. What's more, Momento came out in the year 2000 and Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001. Very convienent for the fan that got access to BOTH contents around such time.

As the mom to someone has actual DID (Multiple Personality Disorder), these movies cause people who have DID a lot of issues because most people BELIEVE that people who have these disorders have a "violent/murderous" Personality, causing those with DID to constantly have to explain that THIS IS A COMPLETE AND TOTAL MYTH. It causes mistrust- especially with employers- because this mythical portrayal in movies/shows is so impacted in our media that they take it as a given truth.

I think there are some really fun and interesting ways to have movies, even horror movies be bacsed or have a character with DID but sadly the bad representation with the one “crazy” personality is all I ever see

But such is the case with all personality disorders. Psychopaths and sociopaths are not synonymous with murder. If you’re a murderer, the likelihood of you being a psychopath or sociopath is higher but you can absolutely have one of those disorders and not be violent whatsoever. It’s just an extreme being used for conflict because that’s what film is all about. Take it with a grain of salt.

The Usual Suspects is another movie that I watched with my family for the first time within the past year and a half. Again I knew that there was supposed to be a plot twist but I didn’t really know what it was. I think I actually figured out the twist though. I just couldn’t believe that the man could know that much intimate details about another man’s life. He just seemed to know more than he should. So I guessed that he might be the same man he’s just telling the story of himself. But I didn’t fully know. So when it was finally revealed I was partly proud of myself but I still extremely shocked

When they're in Bill's Leather Shop, you can see someone looking in watching them from outside. That's John Doe stalking them. Also, Pitt had actually gotten hurt in the scene he's chasing Doe in the alley. The cast and sling he wears had to be written into it. There's some awesome BTS and Easter eggs to be seen.

The skin I live in- that is a movie with a dark twist, the doctor that has a female prisoner in his mansion who he rapes every night, is actually a man that has undergone drastic cosmetic and gender changing surgery that the doctor did without consent and is also the rapist and murder of the doctor’s dead daughter. That movie is just as wild as it’s twist.

Sympathy for mr. vengeance . . . this movie seems to be forgotten in so many lists. The funniest thing about this is the following, three movies about revenge have been made by Park Chan-wook back then: 1. Symphaty for mr. vengeance 2. Oldboy (featured in this list) and 3. Lady Vengeance. And Symphaty for mr vengeance is full of dark twists.

Under Suspicion with Liam Neeson has a great double twist ending that's definitely a watch. Also, the one with Gene Hackman and Monica Belluci. Lastly, Death and the Maiden, slow but with a great ending.

15:57 - THIS is the scariest moment in Psycho; that crazed, deranged and excited look on Norman's face whilst baring his upper teeth is extremely unsettling and far more scary than the shower stabbing. It is such a departure from his normal, calm and kind demeanour that you can barely believe he is the same person as in this scene.

A psychology student i knew believes that teddy didn’t kill his wife. The doctors were experimenting on him like the escaped patient told him. His wife was killed in a fire set by a pyromaniac. The dreams he has about his wife burning look like they are in a different home. Its certainly an interesting way of looking at it.

17:25 Gone Girl (2014) reminds me of a much older aussie movie that many don't know exists. Alexandra's Project (2003). It is the same but different and screws with the head.
