Re: the Do-335 Pfeil The one surviving Do-335 is, as the vid says, on display at the National Air & Space Museum. It took many years to restore this aircraft to its current condition. After its capture by the Americans in 1945, the plane was transported by ship to the United States for technical evaluation. Since it was a conventional piston plane the main point of interest was the ejection seat. The plane was partially disassembled during evaluation and study and was not re-assembled until it was acquired by the museum in the 1970s. During the restoration process, the conservators discovered that the detonation charges and explosive bolts intended to blast away the rear prop and the upper rudder assembly in the event of a bailout situation were still in place and armed almost thirty years after the aircraft was built.

I came down to the comment section specifically to make sure someone had mentioned the exploding bolts. Though it wasn't the conservators at NASM who found that they were still there - in the 70's, the plane was sent back to Dornier to complete restoration by the same people who had built it thirty years earlier. Apparently, they had been joking saying, "Wouldn't it be funny if we found the explosive bolts still in..." and then realized it wasn't such a joke. (Or so the docents told me)

Sadly, that tells more of the mainstream TV than the quality of this video. Which WAS NOT BAD, don't get me wrong. But after the excellent BV glider beginning it goes sideways and talks about paper projects that did not fly - and in the intro it clearly states no paper projects. Worth a watch for the BV glider part alone, that was all new to me. I knew of the super mini plane planned under an arado jet but not one to be towed by a 109.

Good video. One minor point - turning the Me 321 into the Me 323 by adding six engines didn't "solve" the problem with it. The engines, plus their fuel, added weight, which severely reduced the cargo capacity. Although the lifting power of the Me321 remained considerable, it could not carry out the prime function of the Me 321 - which was designed to airlift tanks. Between them, the two aircraft represented a design dead-end.
@wolf310ii
@wolf310ii 6 років тому
Adding 6 engines solve the problem. The Me 321 was build for Operation Seelöwe, after the Operation was canceled, there was no more need to carry tanks. With the 6 engines alone, the cargo was reduce to 11t, but with the help of the RATO or a He111Z the Me323 could take of with 22t cargo

Thank you for the details, and finding the old stills and film. I've often wondered about these, and the extras, comparisons with aircraft built by other nations, were very nice, especially finding vindication for the "flying flapjack," that only arrived to late, at the dawn of the jet age. Aircraft have always meant a lot to me, because my father was a single-seat, single-engine jet fighter pilot, for over 20 years, mostly in the Virginia Air national Guard. As a captain, he had flown more different aircraft than any other captain in the US Air Force.

I hope you aren't expecting a propeller plane to get up to 700 kph at sea level... because that's simply not possible, not in the thick air at low altitude... you've got to get to higher altitudes to reach the given top speeds for every single piston engined, propeller driven plane. Fully upgraded, and at around 6-7km altitude, none of the Do 335's in the game have any problem getting up to 700 kph and higher in a straight line. Takes a few minutes if you do it by just flying straight of course, but you can always expedite that by climbing a bit more and then going into a shallow dive, leveling out once you reach your top speed. Note also, these values are True Airspeed (TAS, simply SPD in the game), not Indicated Airspeed(IAS). Handling wise, it's not that bad actually... rolls great at all speeds, rudder is a bit stiff but oh well. The elevator is actually really strong and can put the plane in some high G turns, but then comes the only really irritating part about the planes handling... the elevator might be strong, but it's responsiveness is... well, it feels like it's asleep. It takes about a second for it to really react, which is why getting guns on target is somewhat difficult. -_- I've got to test the Do 335 on full realistic with joystick/throttle/rudder pedals some time... it could be that the instructor is messing up on that flight model, like it did on so many others in the past before they got adjusted.

Nah it can do 750 kph you just need to do manual engine contol and accelerate with WEP for very long time.

There was an He-111Z at a small airport near Columbia, Missouri back in the 1980s. I bought a model of the aircraft about six months before I spotted it, so I knew what I was looking at. It was beautiful to see. I don't know if it was flight worthy or not. I used to pass it on trips there every couple months back then.

In addition I hear 1 or maybe 2 kidney punches at the cable History Channel and the 1 in this video was top shelf. To the point that even my wife laughed at it and she doesn't care for military history at all.

I had never heard of the Arrow, so thanks for that. I am told that much of the drag on an aircraft comes from the vortices shed from the wingtip, so people tried circular and hoop shaped wings to try and make 'a wig without a wingtip'. Unfortunately, without drag, you can't have lift, so they could not be the hoped for success.

Fabian Meisner Atleast the Do335 B-2 is really good(in RB) if you know how to use it. In the first phase of a match I load AA belts and no bombs and climb to intercept bombers. Thanks to the great speed I am usually the first to engage any bomber and the trio of 103s makes it a quick job to down almost anything. One the thread of bombers has passed or I ran out of ammo, I change for a groundpounding loadout and, well, groundpound, again with the 103s shining in their role. This strategy +booster has basically become my primary source of income in WT. Oh and also sometimes you can trick a fighter to a head on, in wich they usually either die or loose too much speed from the turn to catch me afterwards.

P.S. although I understood what you meant at 17:35 ish about it being able to carry five one hundred kilogram bombs within its Bombays, the way you worded it/strung that sentence together may cause a lot of people a fair amount of confusion. was gonna say you could make an annotation, but, youtube in all their infinite wisdom has done away with the annotations feature as well as my personal favourite, showing all your comments on a video regardless of date so you don't spend hours looking for them. lmfao awesome video though man, thoroughly enjoyed the little bit of it I could watch before having to go back to working with my dad.

I really enjoyed this video as it was well-researched and informative. W.W. II was a time of seismic changes in aviation technology beginning with biplanes based on W.W. I concepts and ending with jets. I do want to take issue with one point you made however- referring to twin-engine propeller aircraft. Where did you hear that all twins had contra-rotating props? Admittedly some do and did as early as 1939 with the P-38 Lightning, (with the exception of the ones produced for lend-lease which the Brits understandably did not like) but it was a new concept and one still not universally used. The problem with that design was in high-performance designs like a fighter or fast transport when one engine fails suddenly during takeoff the plane will torque-roll like right *now *... giving the pilot barely a second to react if that. Splat. Bad day at the office as we would say.. Twins with same-direction-of-rotation engines (as the vast majority have) are much less dangerous in that setup as only direction of flight is affected and the first response is to add rudder while setting trim into the good engine and feathering the failed one, a procedure most trained pilots can handle without mishap. Still liked the video and if you have any more good stuff to pass along I'll be there. Keep 'em coming!
