A timelapse of making Venice in Towncaper. Or at least, something that tries to resemble it.
One big and small update I forgot to mention in the video:
- Townscaper has been released on Mac.
- You can now use the scroll wheel for color picking.

Townscaper's city design logic is really weird. And yet the results look far more natural than most city building systems. I guess it's because the grid is so... irregular. And while that's not quite how things work in the real world, real cities, especially older ones are built with topology in mind, and thus tend to also have irregularities. Even cities built on regular shapes like grids or circles tend to never be quite perfect and have weird irregularities. Contrast this to your average city building game (like say sim city or cities: skylines) which in many cases is built on a rectangular grid underneath. Even where there are things like hills and the like, the actual layout is constrained by the grid, and in many cases the construction doesn't account for terrain so much as it subtly modifies the underlying terrain. Townscaper doesn't have terrain, but it has an irregular grid and the buildings placed on that grid obey the implications of the shapes the grid has at any given location... Thus, while it's also not a realistic outcome, the shapes somehow end up looking more... Natural? More convincing somehow. Clearly not a real city, yet somehow more evocative of the quirks of a place that actually had to be built and is actually lived in... It's weird... And clever. XD
@navilluscire2567
@navilluscire2567 3 роки тому
That all said it's actually more "realistic" than you think in the sense that for much of human history there was no centralized urban planning systems or bodies of government that enforced such. Most old towns and cities basically formed and grew more or less organically, were people, families or businesses would build basically wherever they could or wanted as long as it was a center for trade, ample resources, a source of water for drinking and agriculture, and where opportunity could be found so to would be a gradual buildup, renovating, and tearing down of buildings and structures over many, many generations of inhabitants. Tiny villages would grow into into towns, and towns would give way to what could pass for a city during ancient history. Within all that time, from what we call the classical period to the early renaissancenand even well into late 17th century many cities and towns layouts were the end results of unregulated or inconsistent enforcement of building codes and lack of central planning with efficiency in mind. So you'd get oddly shaped or laid out urban sprawl that looks more like mounds of buildings on top of each other seemingly at random or were roads and pathways go every which way with seemingly no rhythm or reason. It's the generations of inhabitants building apone or trying to get around the buildings and changes made by previous generations until you get places with no grinds, atleast ones were used to in urban areas but a mangled thing made of morter and brick which seems only true natives or the well travelled could ever hope to navigate such quagmires with relative ease. But anyway I thought I'd just share my own take on this, and why I feel that the irregular grid system in *"Townscaper"* makes urban sprawl look so "natural" looking, as if these towns and cities (more like over glorified large towns, lol) buildings were made or rather were built up at a time before central planning was a major, standardized, consistantly enforced thing.
@TheFebgw

@@navilluscire2567 That was one of the most complete and well explained comments I've ever seen, and I totally agree with you. And even though it may not be the most optimized and organized way to design a city, I find it rather charming and pleasent looking. If there weren't any downdides in building towns like this, I would want them to look like this even now. But there are many negative repercussions in this designs, which goes beyond urbanization, related to house design, quality of life etc. I think one of the reasons cities were built this way is also lack of space, specially for islands.

When you get a chance, go to Venice; it's such a beautiful city. Stay away from the tourist areas and explore the back streets. If the game allowed a slightly bigger map, you could have fit in the Arsenale in the south. Also it would be good to see the Ponte Rialto. But you definitely captured the spirit of the architecture of the city.

It's pretty good. I'm staring at satellite image of venice, and I'd say a major flaw is that while most of Venice is very consistent with it's red roofs, some of the landmark buildings you've included stand out from above due to their white roofs, and it makes the landmark all the more dramatic for the contrast it has with the buildings around it. The palace next to the basilica in particular stands out very strongly in a satellite image... I guess that might be a limitation of townscaper though, since the roof colour variations seem to be quite limited...
@Silvarret
@Silvarret 3 роки тому
Yeah, unfortunately you can't change the roof color in the game, it'll always be red :') That simplicity is definitely part of the game's appeal, though.

As venician and considering the game's limitations, you made a great work! I like the decision to build different important places from different districts (sestieri) as Salute for Dorsoduro and Frari for Cannaregio. You may improve your Venice by give it a more "fishy" shape (We say that Venice is a fish, hahaha), and adding other points of interest like the Biennale's Giardini in Castello district (that will may be cool to do with this new path-maker).... ....or having fun and make great contents like today! Hahaha, I'm just waiting for your next video! Bye!

Every western nation (western in this context includes all Mediterranean cultures such as Egypt) since the Bronze Age collapse has undergone a cycle of 250 year rise and fall due to an effect called something like an age of decadence. The Chinese call it the mandate of heaven and they suffer from this too. Every empire that is not externally crushed by 250 years or so falls apart into revolution and often fades away as a result. What is left is unrecognizable. The only two exceptions to this pattern, to my knowledge, are Egypt (not important right now) and Venice. Venice was founded in the 900s and continued relatively smoothly all the way up to Napoleon's invasion in the 1800s. 900 years straight of stable independence. Go Venice!

back to say as a new fan from the townscaper wave (but an upgraded fan after a day of watching) i'd like to personally request u do more video challenges like ur wooden plank and roller coaster track video....it doesn't even have to be a new challenge i'd watch 300 versions of each tbh....i mean u could also easily youtube this request and do this challenge with basic blocks of upcoming / popular games nd get those good good clicks ppl never get tired of that...you see what I just did there ??? i had a request but I lacked the financial stability to support u on patreon so instead I made my request pay for itself.... you have so many series and reoccurring videos I love them you're a smart man you're bringing in those youtube clicks I respect that but I would very much love if you considered strategically catering to my specific tastes (that undoubtedly represent the masses) (the ones yet to subscribe to you) (until) (?) anyway I think you can easily recreate the success you got in the townscaper video in this way. you could also obviously recreate that success by just making other videos like that. U know. intro videos. But that's not very fun and has less viral possibilities. my second request is for you to add pans to your cinematic shots.....perhaps even a gentle plea.......you're too talented to not bring ur videos to the next level it's so easy... u know u just.....barely zoom in there....you lose almost no quality at all, right....you zoom in just a little......and u move that frame......from one side............go to the end of the clip..,......move it ever so slightly to the right.......or left....up or down.......you clearly know how to edit you know this can go all ways..........and just like that..... you don't even have to do individual pans for each shot you don't have to get fancy this isn't sunfest shit you can copy the same pan on every goddamn clip but that will look So Much Better Than It Being Static........... I'm begging you..... Listen to me.....I'm an ~award-winning filmmaker~......and u know why I've won awards???? Because people love a good pan....a good tracking shot will make anyone go "well this is a higher quality video than I otherwise assumed" and you know I'm not lying about being an award-winning filmmaker because the only prize of being a good filmmaker is obnoxiously mentioning it (and a certificate*) *if you print it** (**and 75% of the time if you design it) i like your videos a lot. there is no way I can compliment them in a way that would matter to you-- i don't have the language necessary to notice similarities in your building styles / influences nd stuff like that YET but I really appreciate hearing how you approach things. i don't get it but I'm soaking it up. OBVIOUSLY, i loved rollercoaster games growing up and now but the way u work rlly reminds me of working in maya and it's super inspiring !! an old partner of mine actually bought planet coaster 4 me after I watched the LGR review of it so long ago....i was too overwhelmed my first time playing and haven't tried since, but I think I'm going to dive back in after watching so many of ur vids !! tho I'm a little nervous. i know when I was first learning maya i would just go for constant 10+ hour sessions cause it was tooooo fun LOL i think the reason i like your wooden plank and coaster track video so much are because that honestly seems like the most straightforward way to approach building in the game. It's not realistic. but i know if i was going to recreate something i'd have much more success sticking to using that kind of method this isn't about this video but that doesn't really matter because it's the internet and we're here for fun. i'd apologize for the length but it's oh well. why enjoy things casually? i'd put this in your channel comments but youtube doesn't notify ppl abt those and it's impossible to navigate to these days so.
