The Ocean Kite Engine (OKE) incorporates regen kite control technology, enabling it to generate electrical power and/or providing propulsion. This dual functionality allows the OKE to not only propel boats using wind power but also charge its systems, offering a sustainable solution for energy generation and marine propulsion. Its design leverages advancements in control technology, making it adaptable to various applications beyond sailing, including off-grid energy supply.
We are looking for engineers that identify as athletes and tinkerers to join our team. It's important to have a history of actually identifying problems and coming up with solutions. If you're interested in contributing to renewable energy and propulsion technology, Ocean Kite Energy offers the opportunity to work on pioneering solutions with real-world impact.

Few things I noticed, as a kite surfer: - the kite doesn't need to move around constantly, unless during low wind conditions. - If the kite falls into the water, the boat will continue to move in the direction of the kite, making it impossible to relaunch. The system also needs to rewind faster than the speed of the boat otherwise the boat can hit the kite while on the water and cables end up entengled in the boat parts.

Very valid concern. What we do is monitor tension through the motor, when tension drops below a certain point, the kite engine reels in the line until a desirable tension is met.

I absolutely love this idea! I started kite surfing about a decade ago. These days I fly a power paramotor. It's incredible how much energy can be generated by the wind/kite. Putting this on a sailboat would be ideal! Keep up the great work I'll be watching every video!

Nice job. I'm an engineer and a sailor. I too have considered this but never pursued it because I couldn't work out a practical way for average sailors to easily deploy and retrieve the sail in all conditions they encounter. It also has to operate hands off to be practical. Good luck.
@terracoilGuy
@terracoilGuy Місяць тому
My thoughts too but he's billing it as "for the ultra-performance sailboat". So if you're talking about racers, hey, they'll get it done and use it in the right conditions right? as he says a "super spinnaker". So, so cool! Maybe the power generation will be enough to drive propellers/charge batteries, and thus weasel some more upwind/no wind performance out of it? I'm eagerly following this.

You've got it, you definitely understand the difficulties, We will likely have a quiver of different kites like a sailor has a set of sails for different conditions. We are developing launching strategies and kite storage, techniques. If you have any ideas definitely drop me a line.There are so many talented people involved in this project.. and the demand for kiteboats is much higher than I expected.. but when you look at the tradeoffs, it makes perfect sense.

Seems like none of them besides Skysails can move a boat.. and I have reservations with rigid wings and turbines aloft with conductive cables.. (especially for small scale testing) They are super expensive, and the cost of a crash can be catastrophic, and take a very long time to build.. Traditional wind turbine blades are eroding in half the time they thought.. I fear the same will happen with these rigid wings if they don't crash first. I think kites should be thought of like tires on a car.. Durable but ultimately replaceable.

Right? lol. But seriously, we have come along way since the Mayflower. 1) A kite can have the same power as a sail 4x larger, 2) the wind speed is much stronger higher up (when the wind speed doubles, the kite becomes x8 more powerful because of the cubic relationship of windspeed and lift). 3) Also, people could save a lot of money with 95% less rigging.. 4) There is no annoying heeling motion that typical sailboats have. 5) Plus, this can double as a wind generator to charge batteries.

@Ocean_Kite_Engine You could try finding a person or small group of trusted individuals fitting your target market demographic, who can inspect or even review your engine in operation - then film them doing so. Ideal collaborators will have a personal understanding of potential product applications, and are willing to be included of the next phase of testing and development in exchange for generating publicity material. TL;DR this is already really cool - but for it to instantly impress anyone, you may have to mount it onto a boat and put people on that boat and have them go "Wow, that IS cool!"

I've been closely following your research and I'm genuinely impressed by the innovative work you're undertaking. It's truly inspiring, and I find our interests align, especially in the realm of kite design which I am also exploring. Upon reviewing your system, I've identified what I believe is a fundamental limitation, not with the engine you've ingeniously crafted but with the current kite design being utilized. The crux of the issue lies in achieving stable force production. The inherent instability of the kite in flight seems to be a significant barrier, particularly when factoring in the ocean's tendency to produce waves at unpredictable frequencies and lengths. The chosen kite design appears suboptimal as it struggles with fluctuations in power output, primarily due to the hull's interaction with wave dynamics. The process of converting drag force into linear motion and navigating through the wind encounters inefficiencies, especially as the kite slips through the air. This is noticeable as the hull approaches and traverses over waves, leading to varying energy demands and consequently, the kite's erratic speed across its flight path. At the core of this issue, the kite's need to maneuver in a figure-eight pattern for power generation is counterproductive, given the need for stable flight and consistent power axis alignment. Additionally, the vessel itself could benefit from a mechanism that adjusts its speed to harmonize with wave frequencies, potentially enhancing speed and ensuring the kite's stable flight. I am eager to collaborate with you to develop a kite design that embodies stability in both flight and power axis, alongside a system for the hull that dynamically adjusts to wave patterns, aiming for increased efficiency and speed. I believe that through joint efforts, we can overcome these challenges and contribute significantly to this field. I look forward to the possibility of working together. Please let me know if you're interested in discussing this further.

I often used a single line kite called a sled. It created a lot of lift, very stable at 15 to 20 knots and pulled my boat along very well. You could use it not only downwind but with a decent amount of lateral surface would work well 45 degrees off downwind and if you designed it so that it would pull ahead of the center of the the lateral area, you could balance the rudder and kite so that you could sail without a hand on the tiller just as you would normally. I always used a "Tiller Tender" and never touched the tiller except to change course. Because the kite's line of effort was very low, it would lift the bow. Nice.

Shrink it down to be something a very small boat could use. I'm talking 12 to 8 foot boats. Also, we need some means of reducing sail. A major issue is changing wind conditions. Sometimes the wind is light and sometimes the wind is heavy. In sailboats, you "reef" to deal with increasing wind conditions. Your kite needs to be able to reduce sail area as wind increases. If you don't know how to do that yet, this further makes the small boat concept a good idea as the notion there would just be "don't use it unless the wind is behaving." If you could shrink this down to something small boats could use... I think it would have an immediate market. And once it proves itself at that scale, it could be scaled up and justified on the proven small boat performance.

This looks Awesome!! I'll be looking forward to this on my own projects & vehicles. Pantheon? Interesting, I'm looking at their website for my own project now.... Wish they'd sponsor me &/or some design work.

Thank you a lot for that work! Love it and also the way you took for the development. I am not sure if I had problem with understanding it correctli, but what is the wind window you can use for a sailing vessel? Like a polar diagram? If you google as example, "leopard 42 polar diagram". What directions are possible with a kite to sail with? Wish you all the best and hope to see more of that nice Kite Engine!

The beauty of both sailing and flying. I'd definitely be up there pretending to be superman
We should use this amazing mechanism that's inside a grasshopper leg
