In this heart-wrenching episode, Emma Kenny delves into the tragic case of Molly McLaren, a young woman whose life was brutally taken by Joshua Stimpson in a devastating act of violence. This story, unfolding in the UK, brings to light the harrowing realities of obsessive relationships and the fatal consequences they can hold.
Emma takes a deep dive into the relationship between Molly and Joshua, exploring how what started as a seemingly normal romance spiraled into a nightmare. She examines the warning signs of Stimpson’s escalating behavior, the missed opportunities for intervention, and the chilling events leading up to the tragic day in a Kent shopping center car park.
This episode not only recounts the tragic events but also discusses the broader implications of domestic violence, stalking, and the need for greater awareness and stronger protective measures for victims. Through her insightful and compassionate storytelling, Emma pays tribute to Molly’s life, while also educating viewers on the importance of recognizing and acting upon the signs of an abusive relationship.
Join Emma Kenny for an in-depth exploration of the Molly McLaren case, as she seeks to understand the complexities of domestic violence and the critical importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.

Please, young people, listen to the warnings of your elders! I was just as naive as Molly 40 years ago but not anymore!! With age comes experience that's taught us WHO may pose a danger to us or our loved ones! So please listen to those experienced people who only love you and want your safety! ❤

I get that. I recently locked eyes with an ex stalker across a road in my city after 30 years and the shock is something I thought I'd forgotten. I hate him for having that affect on me even now out of nowhere.

I’m so sorry you went through that! It’s the worst and I can totally relate. I was stalked a few years ago too. A friend got a bit infatuated (I’m married), I wasn’t interested like that we were part of the same friendship group. He didn’t like that I wasn’t interested and followed me around, told people we were going to run away together, turned up at my job, my kids school, drove through my street, appeared at the pub any time I went out and even appeared in the supermarket every time I went shopping. Which was creepy considering I didn’t shop at the same time on the same days. I don’t know how he was doing it! It felt like he was everywhere. He was regularly behind me when I was out driving, would over take me on the motorway and blatantly wave at me. He made new Facebook accounts to contact me every time I blocked one. Same with Insta, Twitter and Snapchat. He even got my new phone number 3 times, so someone was feeding stuff back to him and I never found out who. I got lucky when some rather large and martial arts trained guys from my gym threatened to end him, if he kept on and he actually began to give up and finally me alone. But it took me 9 months to speak out because he convinced me I gave him the come on, so it was my fault, I didn’t even tell my husband until I told my gym friends because I genuinely thought I might’ve done something to lead this guy on, maybe I was too nice or maybe I appeared flirty. He really got in my head, it was wild looking back. I still freeze when I spot a certain colour/make/model of vehicle in case he’s back.

Although logically he should place all responsibility onto the criminal that knowingly and deliberately hurt Molly. But, marrying up the logical with his heart are two different things. Really hope he has a metric tonne of support from the community and statutory services so he can fortify a way to peace he can live with, or, if possible (as he's an awesome person) share with others to help in the future.

As someone who has BPD/EUPD, it makes me sick when people use our fear of abandonment as a reason for such appalling actions. The stigma is hard enough without this BS. At least in my high school, they did teach the red flags of bad reltionships. But, they never taught us how gradual the shift in cobtrolling behavior can be. Or how to distinguish gas lighting from a regukar disgareement. Or the differnce between Love Bombing and genuine care. Once you factor in individual life experience, how different people develop different attachment styles, how their traumas play into things make it less straightforward. Not every perosn manipulates the same way.

I tried to tell the police and they said ‘unless he hurts you, we can’t do anything’ … luckily I found his wife and all his family on Facebook and threatened him that if he ever came near me, my home or contacted me every again, I would be telling his wife everything and it would ruin his life. Thank you so much for covering this case Emma. I didn’t know about Molly, but her story is so similar to my own experience of an abusive, controlling partner, who went on to stalk me. What was different for me was how seriously the police took me. The initial police were very unsupportive and manipulated by my ex, but once I was relocated by the DV team to a new area, the police there were amazing and went out of their way to make me feel as safe as possible. I only wish that Molly had the same experience of the police and services who are meant to protect us

He doesn't deserve to see the light of day, what a piece of work. It makes me mad that he used Bipolar as a manipulation when he didn't have it. Bipolar is a very challenging disorder, and he is an insult to any of us, like myself, who actually suffer from it, and have to take handfuls of tablets daily to cope and stay stable. I wonder if she did ask about his medication. If not, she should have asked a little more about his treatment, and see if he could lie his way out of not taking medication for such a serious illness. 99% of people with Bipolar don't go around killing their loved ones, they are far more likely to hurt themselves. My heart goes out to Molly's family and friends. What a huge loss to this world, she deserved the world, and got him, seems beyond unjust.the way he killed her, he is a vile nothing and deserves what is coming to him.

Emma this reminds me of Rosie Derbyshire, a young girl that was beaten to death by her boyfriend of three weeks. Rosie was a beautiful, talented girl. She went to school with my daughter, in fact her twin sisters were in my daughters class. The worst part of her case is that Rosie had ran a Clare's Law on her boyfriend and it turned out he had loads of previous for violence prior but Rosie was already dead by the time the results came back. This led to her family campaigning and actually getting the law changed so people don't have anywhere near as long to wait on a Clare's Law result. Despite this, nobody has covered Rosie's story on UKposts or anywhere else as far as i can see.

I don’t ever get caught up on how good looking someone is when it comes to these cases, it doesn’t matter to me, hearing about Molly, she was a good person who wanted to be there, care about, help and understand others and she is a great loss. I’m not surprised Joshua showed no emotion at trial, the harsh reality is that people like him are happy about what they have done, they have taken the life of someone they were fixated on and it is exactly what they wanted to do. I hope systems are changed and more people saved. Thank you for the way you do these videos Emma, the fact that you go into all the psychology means that people watching can pick up on things that they relate to and recognise when it comes to how they have been treated by people in their own lives, I know that is certainly the case for me. Abuse and control can happen in all types of relationships including friendships therefore affecting a lot of people.

Kia Ora Emma, thank you for another sympathetic and thorough look at a truly horrible case. I cannot understand how a human could inflict the terrible injuries and pain on an innocent young woman and her family who only sought to help him with his supposed mental health struggles. If I may, I'd like to suggest a case for you to look at please, it is the tragic death of Sophie Elliott from Dunedin in 2008 at the hands of her ex-partner Clayton Weatherston. There are some parallels with poor Molly's case, I believe you are the best person to tell Sophie's story and advocate for her knowing how deeply you feel about domestic abuse and the empathy you bring to each individuals story. I also think you'll find the psychology of the perpetrator beyond belief. This case totally shocked NZ that such an abuse of trust could occur. I'm hooked on your channel and look forward to watching your next case. Thank you again for all that you do, Kenny's crime cult is the best ❤

I don't know if i remember Sophie Elliott case that well before much as I researched into NZ murder cases there just as bad as our own here in the UK and but nonetheless her murder that is also just as tragic as Molly Mclaren and Emily Longley too who I mentioned in my own earlier post just before on here as she was originally from England but moved to New Zealand as a kid then come back to England for collage reasons and got in bad company with a guy who was like Clayton Robert Weatherston and Joshua Stimpson called Elliott Turner who started abusing her and he killed her in the end and it caused upset and grief for families and friends both here in Britain and over in New Zealand since you're a kiwi I'm sure you'll remember that story aswell since it was a big story all over NZ over a decade ago plus other NZ cases such as Kirsa Jensen, Theresa Cormack, Kirsty Bentley, Coral Burrows, Mallory Manning, Christie Marceau, Amber-Rose Rush and the most famous of all as of recently Grace Millane who was a British backpacker in New Zealand when she died both her dad and Emily Longley dad teamed up at White Ribbon to show support against domestic violence to towards partners plus Grace Millane didn't live that far away from where Molly Mclaren lived aswell and Grace Millane was one of many Brits murdered abroad such as like Amelia Bambridge and Hannah Witheridge to name a few it just goes to show it can happen anywhere really also Rebecca Oatley Aylward was one case over here that was really bad aswell as many others over here especially her killer was also called Joshua Davis who lured her into the woods to murder her after a free breakfast bet with friends how sick can you get than that and especially here in my own hometown of Blackpool I've had an indirect friend Sasha Marsden who was also killed over being a false promise of being offered a job to work at an hotel and Charlene Downes and Paige Chivers who both went missing all of a sudden and a Kebab Shop and Grooming Gangs ie (UK slang for men of a certain ethical background who team up together and then become rapists) got blamed for the murder of Charlene but not Paige as she was found another time elsewhere and also Donna Gillbanks who like Theresa Cormack and Coral Borrows had being brutally murdered in a way I don't want to say on here because it is horrific enough knowing it as Donna Gillbanks was also a family friend many decades ago its just awful so many out there the world is such a cruel place no matter where you go I guess sadly it's true

Constantly being watched and he knew everything about me and even would text me repeating my conversations with people but I couldn't see him anywhere. I went to the police over and over telling them he was going to kill me and noone would listen. He kept getting arrested and let out again. He kept breaking his bail conditions but would just get away with it. He eventually ended up breaking my jaw and beating me to a pulp. Only then did it go to court. He only ended up serving his remand time and was let out the same day. Some of the things he dod are like something you eould see in a movie. Stalking to him was a full time job and lile emma says i was in a state pf constant fear. Even when he wasnt there i eould think he was and would flinch at every noise. I will admit, at 23:22 when you were talking about recording someone, I understand and I agree with your points but on the other hand I don’t. I was in an abusive relationship and if I didn’t have the recordings of everything, nobody would’ve believed me. Nobody would’ve seen what I saw as on the surface he was a nice and charming man… behind closed doors he was evil. Without the recordings, I don’t know how I’d of gotten out alive and been taken seriously.

the story parts sounded very much like my ex and i, when i broke it off with him and told him to get his stuff and leave my house he begged then flat out refused and id seen his temper earlier that day so i wanted him out but even with me finding places he could stay for a few days until he was sorted out he flat out refused and came at me saying i will leave when i am good and ready didn’t matter that it was my home he wouldn’t move out luckily only had too wait two days longer for him to leave but it set off my anxiety and mental health which he always had fun messing around with my head. since they have left they and friends of theirs have been stalking me even tho i have left most of my social media and no longer give out my phone number, i’ve reported things to the police on many occasions but all i get told each time is their needs to be more witness to what happens and unless he causes me physical harm or i am in threat of my life they can only sit on their hands. the thing is they don’t understand how being like that can shatter some ones world. i panic to leave the house or to open my front door to make new friends or try finding a new relationship or to even do a simple task like shopping is just so upsetting when out i’ve even found myself physically trying to climb walls just because someone has walked around a corner and frighted me. its like the police are more on the side of the person doing the stalking rather than the victim. the only choices i’m left with is to wait for him to harm me or for me to completely up sticks and move away from my friends and family and support. i don’t understand why its so in favour of the person that is doing the stalking i was always brought up to believe that the police would protect and deal with bad people but that is so far from the truth it’s scary to think that so many can get away with what they are doing just because they haven’t caused physical harm to the other person. the law or people really need an overhaul in how they deal with this now that tech has moved on they can cause so much damage and harm and sometimes they can do it when they are sat next to that person and then like you say tell the party that they are going crazy and its just the mental health playing up. why can’t the people being stalked be believed more or shown more compassion??

A few years ago I was stalked by this guy I met on tinder, we only dated for a couple of months! It got so bad that I got the police involved in the end. He followed me around, showed up at my house and workplace unannounced, stole my clothes and even put hidden cameras in his flat! It was the most unnerving and frightening experience of my life and I’m 37! My advice to anyone would be to run at the first red flag. These people can literally end up killing you

I think it goes deeper than "If I can't have you, nobody can". It is more "If I can't have you, then YOU can't have you". It is about entitlement but also control. Once the victim tries to walk away (which we know is the most dangerous time in situations like this and DV), the coercive controller needs to get that control back. It is the ultimate control to take away their life. Law enforcement need to be better trained to see the signs.

Hi Emma, I’m going to keep commenting this until you see it. Could you pleeeaaaasssseeee do a video on coercive control? I noticed you mention it often as so many cases involve coercive control. I’d be incredibly interested to listen to a full definition and your expert opinion/say on it. This video is a perfect example as to why a deep dive into coercive control is needed, I think it would be a great type of video for your channel and everyone who enjoys the psychological side of things, like myself. Thanks!!

That disgusting stalker piece of shit took away a lovely person, an empathetic beautiful young woman!! Rest In Peace Molly ❤️ One of the lovely things you,Emma, told us about her was that she would be the person noticing if you’re alone and would want to make contact. The empathetic trait.. I’m like that too. Tries to make people feel that they are not an “outcast” in their environment, for example in school. I was popular in school and has always been that way and very self confident too, so making friends with someone who maybe didn’t look like “us” or seemed like an outcast, it didn’t face me what others would think “if I hang out with that person” you probably know what I mean. I wasn’t raised by parents trying to fit in the norm either so they never tried fit me into the norm. You know, the fear of being not like everyone else, as if that’s a bad thing…. If I asked a person to join and they wanted to be friends, they would then be popular as well. I bet you’ve all seen “Mean girls” (or maybe I’m getting old) but then you know what I mean. Except I wasn’t mean 😂. So anyway, that’s how easy it was making someone’s life better. I made a best friend by doing this, and her mother thanked me, that’s how I know what a difference it can make just to give someone a chance. That’s what I did with this girl, gave her a chance, and it brought us both much joy, we had so much fun together, for years to come! So if you’re a popular one in school definitely try giving the shy kid a chance. Well, try it whether you’re popular or not! The problem with this trait as talked about in this episode about Molly, you can either meet a new best friend, make someone’s life better, OR they might ruin yours if you’re not very careful, and sometimes you are careful and it happens anyway because the person turns out to be a really mean one or/and a stalker! How do we think and behave when we have this kind of trait “want the shy one to be included”.. It’s so difficult when you think about it!

I remember hearing this case not long after it happened. It was utterly harrowing. In my younger years I dated a guy just like this. I was living with him and his parents at the time. His father was also a bully and actively encouraged my ex to tell me to change my outfits or when to be home. 4 years of hell until I finally managed to leave. He is a father himself now, i only hope his son does not grow up the same. Much love Em and to all who have managed to get out of these situations, it is not easy. ❤

This scares me. I'm in this exact situation at the moment. I went to the police station but they straight up told me they can not do anything about it because he's homeless and they can not contact him because he has no phone. Yet the police has been called to my house multiple times. Every time they are just having a talk with him and ask him to leave. Then they just let him leave without warning until he shows up again at my house. Then the same thing happens again. This is frustrating and very disturbing. Sometimes I really wonder what the job of a police officer actually entails. I thought that they were supposed to protect us.

Oh Man, this really hits hard. 6 months ago I finally left a long term toxic "relationship" for the last time. I broke up with him several times throughout, but like with Molly he wouldn't leave me alone so I caved because I couldn't bare the stress. Also i'm very empathetic person so upon learning he is an orphan and his mum died in a car crash with him in the car (actually that really did happen) so I just felt so sorry for him. I tried to encourage him to get help to no avail. Probably because I was his emotional punchbag and he didn't need to go elsewhere. I'm just so happy I'm out of that for good now. I genuinely don't think I would be alive for much longer otherwise.
