Tray is absolutely ideal for lofts! Brilliant job. It keeps cables away from insulation. Good for shower and cooker cables which you don't want near insulation. Good for ring mains in bungalows too where you don't want to run in 4mm.

I think the tray is great tbh, keeps them all off the pipework, miles neater and for the sake of about £35 in materials it looks a million dollars 👌🏼 lovely stuff mate

Exactly. What's £50 in a £1,000 plus job? When did people start having to save pence in the pound up front before regretting the cost of putting it right? Perhaps when they started just staying in a house for a few years before moving? But I've seen people insist on a cheap job and accepting a bodge even when they're going to raise a family in the same place for 20 years.

Tray looks fantastic and avoids damage. I would use more of it in residential especially in lofts. Sparks keep saying people won’t pay for it £35 it’s a no/brainer. Explain it to the customer and the reason for it not just safer well managed and organized but so much easier to trace as well. If it’s well explained then customers would pay for it.

Houses should be built with commercial cable trays, service risers and adequate access to replace/rewire later as home owners need to be able to customize/upgrade and have additional sockets equipment installed. Every house I've lived in has made this next to impossible without gutting the building first. Very tidy consumer unit mate. Again I'd like to see commercial Distribution boards in houses like they have in U.S.A.

or like in EU. bring flexible plastic conduit into consumer unit and terminate conduit inside the boxes, so you can easily pull single wires later.
@Orgakoyd

Same with the plumbing. There should be a standard way of running cables and pipes from the source through to various parts of the building, ideally from a single port from ground floor to subsequent floors, and then on to other rooms in a logical and accessible way. If some cables and pipes are on surface in various parts of the building, so be it. Function comes before the pointless aesthetic of hidden everything, it's not the 1800's anymore and buildings have running electricity and water, why pretend they don't exist?

I used to be a Trades Assistant (I can't Spell fridge but I can lift one) for a Sparky and He was absolutely Meticulous with his Work standard of making sure the Job was routed correctly and was done in one Run without Joiner-boxes. Some of us customers want a really good job that will see out our last 25 years to 90+ without having to call in trades when we're getting very old and frail. It's incredibly difficult finding sparks who will listen, arrange cables beautifully for anyone to pick up on what's been done so later jobs are clear and simple, and realise that we're prepared to pay the necessary difference. I've ended up installing boxes, conduit, lamp holes, etc so professionals only have to feed cable through, connect sockets, switches, lamps, consumer unit mcb. "Electrician's dream" they say - then bash through their stuff and left whatever mess they could with assistant letting earth sleeving slip into the connections. How do you find sparks who take pride in their work. Even recommended ones turn out to do quick in and out jobs but their recommenders didn't know what to ask and check for

Personally I would love to have seen tray work in my loft instead of the usual clipped to the rafters. If the tray work made your life easier/made for a neater job they it has every right to be in a domestic instalation. When it comes to name & shame, it's a very tricky one. You haven't actually been negatively impacted by the previous work as it wasn't your house, contract or money so its probably best to stay out of it. If the customer decides to name & shame, that's their perogative. The contract was between them and the company who did a subpar installation according the NICEIC. There is also a possibility that the company may be a pretty reputable one, but for what ever reason, whoever completed the work on this house fell well short of the standards usually worked to. Maybe a new employee who bluffed their way through an interview etc etc. Not making excuses for them - just trying to add a slightly different perspective. You have said yourself how you struggled with things when you lost your Dad and didn't do things as well as you could have. The spark who did this may have been in a similar situation but rather than poor customer service, they cut massive corners on the job. On the other hand, they may have just been a useless chancer who has no place rewiring a plug, let alone a house. Either way, i think it's probably best to stay out of it. :)

Perhaps they used the pipes to keep the cable off the asbestos

I like it, The previous job was poor but I don’t think the loft help the previous sparky, weird shape meaning they ran everything down the middle. If they watch your video hopefully they can take those improvements onto future awkward jobs. Could you have not fitted some noggings and laid the tray flat across the beams? Thanks bundy10 always enjoy a Friday evening video.

Your allowed to run a 4mm2 radial off a 32A RCBO just limited to 75m2…. It’s in the OSG anyway lol

I wished they used tray or basket for new construction loft wiring. I expect the badger who did the original work charged a similar price to Nick too.😳

Did you get that ceiling tested that’s in the garage? Looks a lot like asbestos board?

Everyone saying they would have used pvc trunking I completely disagree. Tray is the tits and it should be used more. All the cable is accessible and it looks a damn site better than pvc trunking that's gonna be yellow in 2 years
@dannyboisparky
@dannyboisparky 2 роки тому
Who cares about trunking turning yellow in the loft space 🤷🏻‍♂️ it may be better but try getting customers to pay for that when it’s a struggle to get them to pay out for a decent brand full RCBO board
@benjamincompton9767

@@dannyboisparky yeah fair enough it doesn't matter if it turns yellow in the loft space... but its shite... trays better. That's literally the end of my thinking, if the customer doesn't like the price I don't get the job.

I would love for this to be standard practice. Much more practical when considering fauna and thermal insulation. I’m a big fan of the old ways where cables were installed as such, they can be easily accessed and rewired. Solid board flooring is trash and new builds in general just slapped up with cables covered with a bit of capping.

The only issue with the tray is the way it blocks access to a part of the lost. It looks great and I think it is fine for domestic. I am going to use some on my house. I think the access will be required sooner or later and someone might have to remove it.

Nice work but didn't see an earthing connection bond to any of your cable tray in the roof?
@mathman0101
@mathman0101 2 роки тому
No need to bond to main earth terminal the tray does not have a normal connection to the mass of earth so no big difference of potential. To bond or not to bond can be determined other than a visual/assessment is to use a continuity/resistance type test where the resistance of tray and MET is greater than the safe resistance calculated (at no greater than 30mA usually) and resistance of human body (usually when wet). Look at Guidance note 8 earthing and bonding from the IET. Arbitrarily bonding conductive/metal part like tray that is not extraneous can in fact create a more dangerous shock hazard under a ground fault condition.
