I watched almost every game Aikman played for the Cowboys. I have a mental picture of one particular play. Troy was waiting for his receiver to reach a certain point before he could throw a timing pass. A lineman was running full speed at Troy. Troy didn't flinch. He threw the pass a split second before the lineman speared him in the chin with the top of his helmet. It was a scary hit. Pass completed and Troy's chin got bandaged up and Cowboys won.

Troy made a comment that illustrates something that is so often overlooked about those Dallas teams. Before Jimmy or Jerry ever came to town the Cowboys were already planning to draft Aikman. Michael was already there, Ken Norton Jr. was already there, half of the players that would make up the O Line were already there. Landry and Schramn may have lost a step from their peak but nobody gives them credit for recognizing a lot of the problems and laying a solid foundation to address those problems. Now here we are 28 years removed from the last Cowboys Lombardi Trophy and I think about not just how badly Coach Landry was wronged by Jerry Jones but how badly he was treated by the fans in his last two or three years when the team was going through hard times. I'd rather have 3 losing seasons following 20 years of winning seasons, 18 playoff seasons, 5 Super Bowl visits and 2 Super Bowl wins than 28 years of hope deferred mediocrity.

The one thing that Jimmy did very well was draft the right players to help Troy and the team. That Herschel Walker trade was the foundation to their 90's dynasty. Emmitt Smith gets drafted in that the next season and the Cowboys go 7-9 in 1990, 11-5, and then next season in 92, Jimmy sticks with Aikman and they went 13-3. Their final piece of the puzzle was getting Charles Haley from the 49ers for a pass rusher and the rest is history.

A long time Cowboys fan since I was a kid growing up in Texas. I watched all of the Super Bowls the Cowboys played in. When Jimmy came along as the head coach he was the foundation of this team. There will never be triplets like Troy, Emmitt and Irvin. Every time Troy talks I listen. He is one of my favorite players. Its about time Jimmy is going into the Ring of Honor. Interesting him admitting his weaknesses in addition to strengths and you can just see it because nobody threw the comback routes like that guy. I hated the cowboys but man that Aikman to Irvin come back route was crisp AF. Nobody could do it like them.

Man, nobody remembers now, but it was touch & go for a minute between Troy Aikman & Steve Walsh as to who was going to be the Cowboys QB of the future. The 1 win they had in 1989 Walsh was the QB.

I was at the Rams game in November 1990. What was exciting was that not only did they beat a good Rams team, but you could see and feel the team getting better. I did not know then that Troy was tired of it all, but he certainly made the right choice by sticking around !

Those team were loaded with talent at coaching. Wannstedt, Davis, Norv, Houck, Campo etc. Almost all of them got a shot at being at a HC in the NFL. Though they did not do well lol.

I met Troy back then. I was at Bellagio in Vegas. We were down at restaurant for breakfast and he walks in and sits down a few tables over from me. I wanted to say hello to him but he just seemed to have the weight of world on his shoulders. I said, I think I will leave him in peace to have breakfast. As it turns out I saw him again in lobby. Such a quality guy. I told him he sat near me in restaurant and I thought about telling him I was huge cowboy fan. He smiled and said thank you. I’ve been able to meet Roger Staubach twice, Bob Lily, I was at Tony Dorset’s house making a leak repair on his roof one day. After I finished he sat in living room and just talked for 15 minutes. The next thing we knew there was knocking at his door. It was Murray w tv sports show. They wanted to know his comment on cowboys signing Herschel Walker for much bigger contract than he had. He was so angry. He deserved better than Dallas gave him that day. The next day I saw him at San Francisco Steakhouse with a beautiful blond girl. He was drunk and was all over her while sitting in lobby. It was obscene.

I really liked this video. I wasn't really much into football at this particular time when Aikman got drafted as the number one pick overall and that was the year that they went 1-15. So it was really the following year that I actually started paying more attention to football in general and following the Cowboys and they were a bit frustrating to watch I have to say. They did end up going 7-9 that year and I can remember a couple of those games and one in particular. I think it was against New Orleans and Bobby Hebert was the quarterback and I was like we can beat these guys because at this point they already have Aikman, Irvin, and Emmitt Smith and there was a lot of talk about how this is a promising team, they have a lot of potential, they got talent, and so on and so forth and so I was like yeah we can beat these guys and they got beat in that game. You could see sparks here and there and like they mentioned in the video, towards the end of the year they went on a little run and they won like four straight and things were starting to look up and of course after that it's just the history of what happened from that point on with the Cowboys. They go on and win like three straight Super Bowls and so it was really interesting going through that building stage and the way they describe it in the video it's just like little pieces here and there that they had to, it wasn't just the talent on the field, I mean that's the most important is having talent on the field but then having guys who can manage it and they had all the right pieces, you had Jimmy Johnson already in place and we know what kind of head coach he was, I mean he was just one of those disciplinarian type coaches, he wasn't going to be the kind of coach that would get outcoached regularly, he knew his football and then you had Aikman who was the kind of leader you want on the field, I mean when I heard him in this interview here, they talk about how, or he talks about how he was real demanding of people and of the other players on the field and he said he was confrontational which I never really got, you got a little bit of that impression because you would see him yell at people sometimes on the field but you listen to him and he just sounds like a really kind of even keeled kind of guy and you just don't imagine him being a confrontational type but he did have a temper and he would confront guys and he would be very demanding of them and you need that kind of guy, you can't have somebody who's wishy washy and he even said it himself, he didn't want to be anybody's friend out on the field, it was all about production and that was kind of an interesting thing that he mentioned and he was so intent on seeing that his team win that he had put a lot of pressure on himself, I had no idea that the pressure was getting to him that much, I mean he would have thought in the first year going 1 in 15 that that was when he was going to feel the burden and the pressure, especially being the number one pick but he actually says it was the second year and so much so that he was even talking to his agent about getting traded, I had never heard that before so that was an interesting new little piece of information we got out of this video. So there's the next piece, you have Jimmy Johnson, you have a quarterback who's a real leader, actually all three of those guys, the triplets, Michael Irvin, Emmett Smith, they were all leaders and then you had Norv Turner come in and he becomes your offensive coordinator and he really helped to turn that team around as well so it was just this sort of gradual build up and sometimes we have the expectation, you have all this talent on the field or in basketball, on the court and you just expect instant results and it just doesn't happen, you've got to have the right leadership there as well and so this was a really neat video to watch and listen to. I've written offenses and that is what you do. I'm amazed at how many coaches can't do this while continue to have a job. Norv was a very good OC, but was an average HC.

I think part of what makes a coach good is designing a scheme that takes advantage of the players strengths and abilities rather than trying to fit a players strengths and abilities into the coaches scheme.

I think you have to thank the Vikings for the worst trade in NFL history. That more than anything helped the Cowboys with there success. .

I never liked Dallas, ever. But I have to respect Coach Johnson's resilience. It also sounds like Norv Turner was very intelligent to employ a Don Shula approach- exploit each player's strengths instead of trying to force each athlete into your 'system'.

I have no doubt Norv Turner made the difference, it sure wasn't Jimmie Johnson. What made the Cowboys great was Jerry Jones epic trade, Hershel Walker to the Vikes for an unbelievable amount of talent and high draft picks. Jones proved it when he fired Jimmie Johnson, hired Barry Switzer and still won a ring. I've heard Troy say on other interviews if Johnson instilled discipline in the cowboys, they'd have won 3 more rings. Some people really do just get lucky in life, Johnson lived the dream.

It turned out well for the Cowboys, but being drafted #1 overall to a very bad team probably took some years off the back end of Aikman's career. He took a lot of hits and had a lot of concussions early in his career, although in those days, players just shook them off and put themselves at serious risk of permanent brain injury. Hopefully it won't take years off the end of his life, but that 1-15 season was pretty brutal.

People forget how good Jimmy drafted and how poorly barry drafted. If Jimmy's able to continue building that monster who knows how far that team would have gone

I never likes the Cowboys , I remember the first two seasons that Aikman played for them. He is lucky to still be alive. He literally got the hell kicked out of him. After surviving that mess he was able to prove how tough he was and be a leader to a future Dynasty. Aikman and Staubach were 2 of the toughest to have played.

Troy was a very average Quarterback who basically threw as many touchdowns as interceptions, don't believe me, here are his stats: 165 TD 141 Int / QBR 81.6. He was a decent QB on an incredibly stacked team! He never had to take a single game over or a whole season over by putting the team on his back!

It still took. 2 years to turn the ship around. The nfl doesn’t normally have the patience to build the team to what it turned into. But if Jimmy hung around, the boys would have been to more super bowls. Winning them? I don’t know.
