“Popular televangelist Paula White is urging her followers to donate a "first fruits" offering of up to their entire salary for the month of January to enjoy "blessings" for the rest of the year or suffer the "consequences" of failing to follow God's command.
"Each January, I put God first and honor Him with the first of our substance by sowing a first fruits offering of one month's pay. That is a big sacrifice, but it is a seed for the harvest I am believing for in the coming year. And God always provides!" White explains on her website.

While I am a Christian (specifically a Baptist), I am tired of the hypocrisy and selfish promotions of Conservative televangelist preachers, mainly it's because of them that Christianity is looked down upon so much by non-Christians. There's nothing wrong with donating to your house of worship, but don't claim its for helping the poor/less fortunate when so much of it goes to yourselves.

Jesse Torres I'll never understand why you all believe that it's "ok" to donate your money to a church, which is tax-exempt. WHERE in the New Testament does it say Jesus passed around a basket, brow-beating his listeners for his rent (and then some). He was a carpenter and part-time beggar. He was NOT a motivational speaker who charged for his "advice". NOR should your preacher be.

Dennis Staughton The reason that people donate to legitimate churches is to keep its doors open and to provide funding to outreach, charity, and other services to the community. It’s important to remember that most churches are nonprofit organizations, and rely on the community to stay financially afloat. So even though it is not mentioned in the Gospels, there is an understanding that the church needs money to provide the services that the community wants from it.

My family asked me why I became an atheist. This is a huge reason why. Any sane person can see that these scam artists are stealing money from poor people looking for help. I don’t disagree with wanting to give some money to your local church to help pay bills and fund local programs to help the less fortunate, but this is just sick. These people have insanely expensive cars, houses, and multimillion dollar churches. At what point do people start to question why they’re still asking for obscene amounts of money from them. It infuriates me that my own family is unable to see that these mega church leeches are just stealing people’s money.

A tithe is 1/10 not 1/12 she's asking for. However, she's just trying to set up her budget. Besides that, tithing is not a salvation issue. There aren't consequences for not tithing. She is wrong for suggesting that they will suffer for not giving money. I think it would be better for Anna not to talk about religion because she has no idea what faith is or how faith works. I'd bet that 80% of those scammers don't give a dime of what they earn, and the other 20% only give a fraction of what they get when cameras are around. It's the sickest scam there exists, and america is pretty much the only country where this is happening on that scale. Blame the education system first and parenting second. The US is 40 years behind on most industrialized countries that have evolved into separating church and state. Your country is nearly hopeless.

This con artist operated in my hometown of Lakeland, Florida and bankrupted a church and preyed on the elderly of the retirement home that is part of the church. She is a very horrible person, preying on the weak, elderly and faithful to scam them out of their hard earned cash. Screw her ... She is a thief.

I was stopped by a group of Christians while out walking with my son and they asked how they could help me (I'm a 54 year old man with heart disease, probably look like I need help). I just ignored them and started to walk away but then turned to them and said: "you really want to help me?" "Oh, yes we do" I said: "Stop voting republican" and walked away. You should have seen the look on their faces. Some looked confused, some looked angry. I wont forget it.

She isn't going to pay her parishioners bills if they lose everything by giving her all their money. if Paula White would only say she needs to support her program if anyone would be kind to send an offering to help provide this program but not to say it's given to God the only thing that this program would do is talk about God and teach scriptures

I don't give to any prosperity gospel churches but I still remember on of the churches I actually still support to this day had purposely built their mega-sanctuary on a rather tight budget to still have money to set aside for community support. in the 90s how many people could find a church that built their sanctuary that seats 2200 for no more than 2.5 million? Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield did exactly that and their operating budget is at 35 million. that budget actually includes weekly feeding programs, a preschool, a after school program, a benevolence fund for emergencies, a broadcast that doesn't ask for money, college scholarships, homeless center support.

First fruits is a boda fide Biblical concept. However, this is what I don't like about TV evangelists and preachers. If I were going to give first fruits, I might give it to my favorite charity, church, or homeless shelter.
