There are children as young as 5 or 6 who attempt self harm. It is tragic and heartbreaking. Pediatric psych wards are very difficult places to work. The problem is getting worse. I believe this is separate from the trans, non-binary issue. I suspect there are kids who have experienced a great deal of trauma.

Same goes for the entire LGBTQIA. I spent most of my adult life (until recently) on the inside of the community. Every Lesbian, Gay, Trans, etc., that I become close to, eventually confessed to childhood abuse. I noticed the pattern early on and took on a motherly role with my LGBTQIA+ friends. I felt bad for them. I felt their internal struggles and pain. When I "came out" as a Conservative, they ALL turned on me. They attacked every aspect of my life.
