No issue with your comments about Rolex and Omega in general but the Porsche analogy is a little faulty. Porsche have twice done development projects with VW to produce cars that would sell under both Porsche and VW brands. The first being the 914 which was available in both Porsche and VW versions. The second was the 924 which VW pulled out of rather late in the day. Later than that, Porsche did an engine design for the original Seat Ibiza hatchback. This was produced with full Porsche branding. If you're looking for a real betrayal of the Porsche brand it isn't an electric Boxster, it's the Cayenne and Macan SUVs,

Porsche.. The consulting company. Will build cars for other manufacturers. The 914... The 924/944/968 which was VW parts bin with an Audi engine initially. Not even supposed to be a Porsche but VW backed out. Then there's the other stuff like the Audi RS2. That one even had Porsche branded brake calipers and wheels on it. And then there's the Mercedes 500E which was part built by Porsche largely due to chassis modification and manufacturing constraints at the Mercedes Sindelfingen factory.

I just read Hands of Time by Rebecca Struthers. It was a great reminder that Swatch saved a lot of our favorite Swiss brands (including Omega) from the brink of collapse by making analog watches cool again in the mid 80's. It's called Swatch Group for a reason. I think every brand in that group owes them a plastic version of a watch haha. I think it was a return favor and it has helped Swatch get back into the top 20 best-selling watch brands

Porsche Design Watches were very popular in the 80s and 90s. The Founder was indeed Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the son of Ferdinand Porsche. In the late 70s and 80s they were produced by IWC. Later it changed to Eterna. Then Eterna was bought up by Porsche Design but now it is in Chinese hands. They stopped producing them in the late 90s I think.

Totally agree on Rolex and totally agree on Omega Moonswatch. I've seen a few Rolex watches with issues. To put it in perspective Rolex are a mass produced high end fashion watch. They're not hand finished (like high end Grand Seiko spring drive/high beat), a million plus Rolex watches roll off the automated robotic production lines and quality at the macro level is hit and miss. We should remember that San Martin makes nowhere near a million watches, so they can spend more time on quality details. I had the plastic Omega and it's a cheap toy. You know that bezel insert is stuck on plastic paper ? I found out when it peeled off a little on my Mission to Uranus, and I would have said to Omega, Uranus is where you can stick that watch.😂

There’s a misconception about Rolex these days, on purpose or not. What’s special about Rolex is not, and never was, the finishing quality. That always been a false impression social media created. Where Rolex is special is mechanics. For mass produced watches, there’s nothing comparing with Rolex bezel action, crown action, clasp action, but more important the movement. Rolex is the only mass produced brand that has all movement parts milled from hard metal, not stamped brass and plated. This does impact reliability quite a lot, and how much time a part can be used in time before needing replacement.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 11 днів тому
Forged and stamped parts are tougher than milled parts. I don't know of many movements that use "stamped brass and plated" parts (and yet there would be nothing mechanically wrong with the plates being made of brass IE. The mechanical strain they face is so ridiculous that they could be very well made out of plastic). Brass is used in watch gearing, also by Rolex, because, alternating metals (a large brass wheel that engages a small steel wheel) reduces wear.
@d3xmeister
@d3xmeister 11 днів тому
@@neutronalchemist3241 That’s not true for many parts. They are not tougher, if you look at wear on the main plate for example, some bridges, they benefit a lot not being made from plated bras. For some springs yes it is true, stamped parts can be tougher, but their action is different. For most wheels brass is recommended.

I just bought them because I like their unique designs, quality in movements and long history as a watchmaker. Of course I am influenced by their marketing and brand reputation and I love their logos and since I am into watches I wanted to have one of them in my collection and despite the hype and all that around them they are just producing good quality entry level luxury watches. I would never see myself as rich just by owning and wearing them, but I am thankful that I am able to afford those kind of in this day and age senseless jewelry. So for someone who is not able to afford those I may be seen as rich, but I am not from my own perspective. I did also choose models from their catalogue that fly under the radar, because I like the understated classic way and don’t want to be in the center of attention. I just wanted watches from them for what their stand for and I can enjoy. Personally, I've never really liked Rolex watches, I just find them a little ugly, far too conventional, unimaginative, and a touch gaudy (Tudor are a better option). Rolex is all about the hype, prestige, and heritage, which is all very well if the difference in quality genuinely justified the massive prices they charge, but it just doesn't, as you have since identified and proven. You're paying thousands just for the name, rather than the quality they promise and then don't really deliver on. If San Martin can better the quality of finish, surely that says it all: Rolex have become, The Emperor's New Clothes. The Omega Swatch is the greatest embarrassment since Gerald Ratner told the media everything he sold was crap! It is the Ratner of watches.

The one issue with bashing Rolex or the comparison of San Martin to Rolex is that: 1) some people (not me btw) assume you are using the Rolex name in a video just to get views, 2) the anti-Rolex content can get old fast if done too often and 3) there can be blowback ... I've seen the San Martin vs. Rolex refered to in passing (not naming you or the channel) in a few videos already. Not saying these are right or fair just saying this COULD happen. As for Omega i'm not sure that Swatch gave them or Blancpain any choice (we don't know what these internal conversations were like) ... In my opinion the shame should go to the Swatch group for doing so. As for electric Boxsters not sure how much leeway the EU is giving ANY European car manufacturer moving forward when it comes to electric vehicles.

To be fair, I don't know one honest watch collector or wearer of high brand names, who would even consider buying an Omega plastic moon watch. Again, this was a marketing ploy by Omega. Stick with a vintage Speed master, 70s Megaquarz or an Aquaterra.

I own one Rolex and that’s it. It’s a beautiful watch and I’m well aware that it is not high end executed like other brands (Grand Seiko) but for a luxury mass producer (over 1 million per year) they are really great in their movements, bracelets and iconic designs which the whole industry especially micro brands and big brands to this day are still inspired from. You have to compare Rolex to BMW. It’s about the engine and design. If you want high end in every aspect you get yourself a Royce or whatever. If I want an high end luxury timepiece I’ll go to VC or Patek. Concerning Omega and Swatch I wasn’t happy about that cooperation either and I can imagine that they had fights over this on the Omega side internally. But since they owned by the Swatch Group they had no other choice. Nevertheless I love the brand and the quality they deliver. Got two watches from Omega and the finish is far superior to Rolex. My first watch back then has been a Swatch. I think I was 12 or something. I would be really happy to wear that iconic Speedy design if I was 12 again today. It’s a great start into the journey of watches, but I would definitely buy the real iconic speedy when I’m grown up later on.

Interested to see over time if the moonswatch improved omega sales. I suspect its been good marketing regardless and I doubt people will think the moonswatch is a reflection on quality of omega watches. However I agree with the distaste for omega selling themselves out with the moonswatch. Still prefer omega as a brand to rolex. More so because of the rolex deception. Marketing is always going to have some degree of manipulation but rolex crosses that grey line i reckon. Further to this the watch snobbery I see play out is annoying. I like my watches and being told its not a real watch unless its swiss or go save up for a rolex pisses me off. If I wanted too, I could go out and buy a rolex but I dun wanna spend that much money on a watch when I can buy awesome seikos casios citizen etc... for a fraction and enjoy them. Rant over! Lol

Ah, the moonswatch. It could have gone either way I suppose, but history will herald its creator a genius with a mountain of faith in the Omega brand. That thing must cost pence to make, but people queued for a mile to pay 250 for it. The bonuses that year must have been eye watering. Plus they created a gateway to a luxury brand and millions of brand ambassadors and it cost them pennies. And so far, it looks like they've done all that without damaging the brand at all as far as Joe Public is concened. I think most enthusiasts though will probably agree with you about the watch itself - i know I do 😊

I’m not so sure about your Porsche/Vw analogy.. VW is the parent company as swatch is the parent company I’m inclined to believe that Porsche and Omega would do what they’re told. That being said the car industry is apparently worth 2.5 trillion and the watch industry is about 97 billion and VW it would seem doesn’t need to come up with quick cash grabs to generate revenue….yet, and if or when that time comes I’m pretty sure Porsche would do what they’re told.

To be fair to Omega, I’m not sure their bosses would have been thrilled about this collaboration but Swatch being the parent company have made it happen to revitalise their sales line. And it’s worked, massively, and I suspect Omega have probably seen an uplift in their proper Moonwatch Professional as well. But you’re right Gary, it is a ridiculously overpriced piece of plastic crap. One has to hope that Swatch made these things recyclable otherwise there’ll be even more plastic pollution of the rivers and oceans.

I love your channels Gary, but you don't know squat about Porsche. The Porsche 914 was originally designed to be co-branded with VW. Only the 6-cyl Porsche 914-6 was going to be branded a Porsche, to replace the 912, and the models with the 1.7L flat-four engine, that came out of the Type 2 VW Microbus, were to be branded as VWs replacing the Karman Ghia. Similarly. the Porsche 924 started as a project for VW, but Porsche took it over after Volkswagen decided the economy wasn't right for a VW sports car. The original 924 was built with a bunch of Audi parts, and even its engine was an anemic 4-cyl from Audi. Sure that was the 1960's and 1970's, but the Porsche Cayenne is built on the same platform as the VW Touareg, Audi Q7, Lamborghini Urus, and Bentley Bentayga, and many of the parts have VW branding.

Yeah but come on anyone who knows about watched knows it's just about brand. Even the whole Patek thing, it's all about movement finishing that no one ever sees. It's just marketing. And people who don't know anything about watches still want a Rolex, and that's the only brand they know. I love Grand Seiko (even though I've seen your video where the finishing leaves a bit to be desired too,) and tbh I'd probably have one over a Rolex if I was spending my own money. But even I have misgivings about that when I think of it, because do I really want to spend that much money on a much weaker brand? It's all nonsense though
