Relive this classic UFC matchup between Octagon legends and former champions Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn at UFC 58 back in 2006. After a back and forth battle that went the distance, St-Pierre claimed the win via split decision, setting himself up for a future title bout with Matt Hughes.

Not only dealing with prime BJ, also took a poke to his eye that cut his eyeball and then Penn followed that up with an uppercut that broke GSP's nose just 1 minute into round 1. I always considered these two very different fighters. BJ never seemed to really train hard, he just had a talent that couldn't be explained. He was just gifted. I'm not saying he didn't train, but that never seemed to be something he had to do so he didn't. GSP was extremely talented too, but also definitely trained and sharpened his skills constantly. I think it means a lot that he got poked in the eye, which definitely hindered him. He got probably a broken nose, which clearly had an effect. He was up against a man who had arguably the greatest take down defense, yet still got taken down multiple times. He never gave up, he never lessened up, and he beat BJ. This was BJs fight to lose after the first round. He got demoralized I think when GSP was getting better as the fight went on. I think the right man won for sure. He earned that win.

@@DESOUSAB WTF are you talking about??? The level of skill, athleticism, action, conditioning, and overall competitiveness has only increased over the years with UFC. It keep getting better and better with time, as the sport evolves and has its roster and thus talent base continues to deepen and expand. The welterweight division right now is insanely stacked with some of the best fighters this division has ever seen. Usman is arguably GOAT status, with the level of opponents on his resume surpassing the quality of opponent's on GSP's resume. GSP would have a much harder time even winning a title once these days let alone dominating for a lengthy period of time. It's difficult for all-time-great level welterweights to even remain in the top 5 at this point, because the competition is so intense and volatile.

Just think; BJ was the UFC welterweight champion, he choked out Matt Hughes but got stripped after contract negotiations fell through. He left and went to fight in other organizations. One of those fights was against a 225 lb Lyoto Machida. Then he returns to UFC and is fighting GSP here. This is why old MMA records can't be compared to current ones. The old days of MMA were so chaotic and unorganized it was not as easy to maintain a consistent record, especially something like title defenses.

I don't know about you, but dismissing a 16-14-2 record as not worth caring about is actually stupid because fans who weren't around during his era i.e. most MMA fans nowadays who came from the Conor/Ronda hype-train will only know BJ from his losses and dismiss him as a bum because of his record, irrespective of what he did in the past. The style war and each fighter finding ways to keep bringing it is crazy impressive and I think bj could be more fit but gsp shows good cardio bursts late into the match to initiate the clinch. In short I think there’s a combination of skills at display here that could slow down the modern high pace fighter.
