Some guys underestimate the value of Stamina and conserving energy in a fight. The defending guy was literally defending himself like a little sibling when they just lie on the bed and start kicking you. He knew he would need to tire him nonetheless so why not do it from the start. The aggressive guy also lost a lot of locking opportunities due to focusing on targeting the head.

To clarify, he wasn't running away, it's a cage. He got rocked and cleared some distance to rob his opponent of follow up shots that could have finished him. Might sound like a small distinction but that was unironically a tactical retreat so he could regroup. And he obviously did.
