I wore my headgear every practice in high school and I still got it. Had to get my right one drained as it was purple and disgusting. Now it’s just really bad scar tissue in my upper cartilage but my lobes are fine. I’m a professional sculptor and when new people come into the studio I work for, sometimes they stare and sometimes they ask if I was a wrestler before an artist. I think I’m a rare sculptor with cauliflower ears lol. My right is worse than the left. I think if you wrestle or something similar for so many years, the constant rubbing of the ears is just going to lead to it. They start by just getting red and inflamed and then u start to see little bruising type blisters.

I wrestled in HS in Oklahoma for 4 years and got it. I never wore headgear in practice because I was either forehead to forehead or much lower than the opponent. Mine was developed more from repeated takedowns where the head stays tight to the opponents body and "turns the corner". Never even felt it coming on just woke up one morning and it was fairly big. Went to the doc and had it lanced and packed with gauze. Looked somewhat normal for a day or two but I never stopped practicing so it eventually took more damage even with my headgear on and padded with cotton balls. Blew up again and I went back to the doc and he stuck a needle in and sucked it all out. Same story again. I had it drained one more time towards the end of the season and after that it solidified into what it is today. I keep my hair short on the sides and yeah dudes see it and the ones who are into mma and shit start asking questions and everything but no I wish I didn't have it. It does show some guys that you may know more than them when it comes to grappling and maybe making them think twice but probably not. I've seen scrubs with cauli too.

Been doing bjj for two years or so and just got hematoma on my right ear lobe 👂. Got it drained once by nurse then bought a bunch of needles and magnets to compress after and it worked perfectly. I’ve been wearing headgear since and no issues. Just trying to share knowledge.

So glad Matt Brown said his bit. I’m currently going through treatment for a hematoma which has been an absolute nightmare so far. I’ve had 2 operations as the hematoma came back after the first one in a matter of days. First op had my ear cut open in two places then a splint stitched to my ear. Two days later when getting the stitches removed, the docs said I had swelling around where the splints were so they had to cut it open again. I refused to get the stitches put in this time round as I know the affected area is too large for them to make any difference. Going back to the docs on Tuesday to get my head bandage removed. We’ll see what state my ears are in then! Got footage of it all bloodied up from surgery so I might put a video up of it.

Some people advice against headgear since in the long run it can kinda mess you up and cause migraines and actually be leas safe in constant use instances.

I used to be pretty insecure about my cauliflower ears but after hearing "it's like a black belt you wear all the time" my insecurity went away instantly haha

I made the mistake of going to hospital and they butchered my ear and it filled back up... Just get a friend to drain it with a syringe and then hold it together with magnets get two types of magnetics 1.8kg force and 1kg so you can mix them up depending on the thickness of the ear

If you drain it you have a deformed ear but it wont have that huge profile hanging out the side. That way you can't see it from a mile away.

So I just got zippers installed so now during my fights I just take my ears off, then I zip em back on after the fight. Problem solved

I've only had two bouts with cauliflower ear, once in each ear about two years apart. My ears still look great! Each time, I went to Walgreens and bought a couple boxes of insulin syringes. I drained the ear myself about 5 to 6 times a day... for about a month, each time. The trick is to constantly keep it drained, or the cartilage grows to reach its only blood source (the skin). Once or twice a day wont do it, have to be vigilant. My ears feel like cardboard, lol but they look like ears!

Got my cauliflower ear about 2011 and had my sister drain it twice at her house since she's an RN. We found a video back then of Mike Swick draining his to use as a reference. Still training, and it doesn't look too bad. The other has also slightly joined the party but thankfully I'm finishing school to become an RN so I can drain it myself if needed.

I got cauliflower ear in 4th grade from getting hit with a basket ball(the ear I got it in was reconstructed about a year or so before in a total of 5 surgeries over the period of 3 years) and then went got it drained it was gnarly and because the ear had already been reconstructed they had to do another surgery to fix it and then went on my way started training in martial arts about 3 years later and haven’t gotten cauliflower ear once so maybe I just got lucky or the surgeons knew what they were doing

Obviously these guys are all trained killers, but there's something about Matt Brown that scares me more than any other fighter. I think it's because he looks like a normal dude you would see at a bar who starts shit. Not saying he is like that though. He doesn't look like much, so you think you could destroy him. What a mistake that would be.

It's very genetic. Most of the guys i train with have it.. and I've taken as much damage as them and never had a problem.

Ignore the guys who are promoting cauliflower ears. They are stupid. Ear to ear tie up is not correct at all. The two guys who said use your fore head are correct. Even in youth wrestling they teach that. I have grappled for years and wrestled before that. Still don't have it. I am one of those guys who believe in using my forehead and head gear. I am a former infantry Marine and I have been to war. Wanting to have war scars is stupid as well. One idiot said it is like wearing a black belt all the time. LOL. I have seen white belts with it. All it means is you thought you were to cool to use proper gear.

I got mine 6 months into training and it swelled fucking huge. I never drained it or anything and luckily it went down a little on its own before hardening and now it just looks filled in
