In South Africa, we use the term "loadshedding" for rolling blackouts such as this. We even have stages! e.g., at Stage 6, 6000MW is removed from the grid in order to avoid a complete blackout

Seems like these blackouts where 'pre-planned' months ago. Where I live there are plenty of shops that have lights on when they are closed.

Folks like to compare this planned Dark Winter to the former Tory's Edward Heaths Blackouts of the 1970s. Of course there is a great deal of difference since then. i) Today 90+ % of all financial transactions require Grid Electricity for IP Communications. PSTN voice communications are now being phased out for IP VOIP comms. ii) Remaining Cash purchases at larger Supermarkets etc cannot be transacted even with cash because unlike back in the 1970s mechanical tills and the little labels which had the price of the item do not exist anymore. iii) To get to my work there were no Traffic Lights on the road in the 1970s. Now there are 13 to travel the 3 miles. iv) Electric Vehicles and Transport such as Intercity Trains were non existant back in the 1970s. v) Todays heating HVAC requires Electricity of some form to work (combi boilers etc) rather than just a match, a rolled up newspaper and a bucket of Coal. vi) Food refrigeration and Freezers were a luxury back in the 1970s. vii) Electrical appliances such as automatic washing machines, microwave ovens etc were very limited or non existant in the 1970s. viii) IP based Food delivery services did not exist. Even basic knowledge has been replaced with Internet Search engines as the World gets more and more Stupid.

why dont my local school turn off there 7.2kwh lights not only half the town might get better sleep it takes a 7.2kwh load of the grid

Oh and what about the electronics that can break because of this? Computers, TV's, internet routers, etc, this can quite literally interfere, if not outright prevent some people from doing their jobs. And what about our fridges and freezers? We'll need compensation for the food that'll inevitably be ruined.

Have I missed something? When was UK overnight electricity usage ever Peak Demand? Isn't that why it was always cheaper than consumption during the day? Isn't that why water heaters and storage heaters were used overnight? Somebody needs to school that reporter.

Crisis after crisis seems to be the order of the day. Buy a few candles and let them keep their electric. Get some heavy coats and blanket and wrap up. Don't buy the oil and we will soon see the prices drop.

I find it crazy that no one talks about how much gas we actually take in from the North sea. Up to 50% of gas for the uk can come through Scotland at peak rates. If we didn't ship our OWN gas out to the EU I'm sure we would be in a much better position.

We should do an emergency nationalisation of our oil and gas supplies?

Well Wales produces 3 times more electricity than it uses, so if we have this three hour black out in Wales that will push us closer to independence. we don't need to keep going without because of England.

South Africans are used to no power called load shedding every day between 2/5 to 3hr n more three times a day at the moment we are in the dark our power went off at 8pm will come on again at 10pm n then again after midnight...
