I watched an interview with a russian prisoner who was retreating out of somewhere near Lyman i think. He had lost both his legs because he jumped into a trench that his own buddies had mined. (thinking they were last to leave i guess) as he lay with blown up legs a medic jumped into the other side of the trench to help him and was killed when a second mine blew up. This is the result of a rushed retreat with little or no coordination.

I’ve seen a couple different reports on Lyman by Nick Peyton Walsh and all in all it is very good, clear reporting. I do think it strange that he seems to link the railroads with some ‘old’ way of fighting wars by Russia, but I’d have to disagree and say that railroads are essential to any large military operation. The efficiency, the minimal manpower required to move large amounts of materials, and the secure nature of rail lines versus roadways with houses along them - makes railroads essential for any operation including bringing up Ukrainian reserves and police forces to secure their rear. You can’t fight an offensive from a railroad but it is essential to have them to win one as well rebuild quickly.

Having already replaced the top commander one (or more?) times since this war began, it's hard to see how another change of commander would help much. This is not just about a need for better strategy and tactics. The problems in Russia's armed forces seem to be systemic and deep rooted, having been going for decades, perhaps centuries. What's more, these systemic failings in the military are only a reflection of the systemic issues within Russian society and politics as a whole. Lack of genuine democracy or care for the people by those at the top, systemic corruption, rule by disinformation and fear/submission, and resulting widespread political disengagement all lead to a blinkered, robotic population who either say they don't care so long as "x" issue doesn't affect them personally, or who mouth the Kremlin line, hoping against hope it's true because it makes them feel safer and less foolish than admitting to themselves it's all BS. Transfer those attitudes to the military and its hard to see how it could operate effectively, except by virtue of sheer numbers of humans they can force or persuade to sacrifice their bodies to the meat-grinder. One of the things I don't hear much talk about is how Russian troops anywhere in Ukraine including Crimea are going to cope with winter, with their logistics and command structure in disarray. Secondly does anyone think Ukraine, which is fielding more troops and more capable western weapons, and is building upon success and momentum every day, is not going to wage a devastating winter campaign? More lessons in warfare lie ahead. After the war and Putin's ouster Ukraine will become Europe's Israel. Fortified. Powerful. Capable. Poland too. The Russian Federation is likely to see revolution and turmoil.

Things are really crumbling for the remaining Russians there. Yesterday Russia lost 44 tanks in one day. That is astounding. I remember when they would lose 5 tanks a day earlier in the war which was huge. US forces only lost 22 tanks during the entire Iraq war. I will say Ukraine has developed into a very dangerous and formidable fighting force. Newly conscripted Russian soldiers should surrender when they get the chance and go fight for Ukraine. They have a Russian legion who are helping Ukraine win every day. This can be the first step in taking back your own corrupt country.

The difference in morale must be incredible. Ukrainians have so much momentum and they're getting more and more skilled at using Western weaponry.

It will end when the people of Russia stand up and demand that it end.

For the sake of accuracy, Belgorod is a city inside Russia approximately 80 km north of Kharkiv. Belarus is hundreds of km to the northwest of Kharkiv. I use Kharkiv as the point of reference because almost nobody will know where Lyman is. Lyman is around 170 km southeast of Kharkiv, so even further from Belarus. I'm sure it was simply a slip of the tongue by Gen. Clarke. He has provided excellent information and insight throughout this conflict, and I mean no disrespect.
