I purchased a Utrasonic Cleaner several years ago, and I would be totally lost with out it. Cleaning carburetor’s is a must. Highly recommended it !

When cleaning smaller parts you can also fill the cleaner with something like soap water and put the parts and cleaning solution in a glass container, then the container in the water. Saves you from using litres of cleaning fluid mixture when you only need desilitres. This was the way we used them in watchmaking school as the cleaning solution was rather strong and special and filling the whole cleaner with it wasn't practical.

Thanks so much for passing that on, i read about that.. maybe for using a different chosen solution for one single small job...just dunk it in with the jar and let it do the magic..!

That is it, some parts like different cleaning fluids and you can mix and match all at the same time. Some even use plastic containers for sensitive components as it can reduce the intensity of the process.

When I was spinning wrenches on M1A1 battle tanks, we had ultrasonic vats on hand specifically for cleaning the fuel nozzle on the AGT1500 turbine engine. Be careful of the variety of cleaning fluid you use if you're going to clean certain non-ferrous metals. A buddy of mine cleaned his carburetor in our tank at work, and while it did indeed get it very clean, the fluid turned everything aluminum jet black in color.

I was advised never to put roller or ball bearing’s into ultra sonic cleaners, apparently it causes brinelling of the surface resulting in bearing failure.

Hi Del and Penny, nice video! thanks for posting. It’s remarkable timing for this video because I just bought a 30L ultrasonic bath from Vevor. I’m using mine to clean the carburetors from my 2002 bandit 1200. I bought the large bath because I wanted to make sure I could put the entire bank for carburetors in the tank without having to break them down. About 10 years ago I lucked out, and bought a used wet abrasive blasting cabinet. Sometimes it’s called vapor honing . This has been my one tool deal of a lifetime. A neighbor was going to scrap this cabinet. I bought it for $100. If you’ve ever looked at this technology, you’ll know they’re very expensive when new. The ultrasonic bath is a perfect compliment to wet or dry blasting to remove abrasive residue. I also bought a used set of gen 3 bandit 1200 carbs off of a European used motorcycle parts website. I’m gonna clean those up as well. They are practice pieces for vapor honing and using the ultrasonic cleaner. With luck, I’ll have two sets of refurbished bandit carbs when I’m done. I’ll resell on set and i hope recoup the money i spent on the ultasonic bath. I was curious if you could use cleaning solutions other than water and soap safely on an aluminum carburetor. based on your video it looks like you can. I was also curious if the ultrasonic bath would takeoff carbon deposits because I was thinking that would have to be done in a blast cabinet or by hand with a wire brush like you describe. Do you have any thought on how hot to run the ultrasonic bath when cleaning a carburetor? Im removing all the jets, floats, needles, etc? Thanks again!

Thanks for your long message, I'm by no means an expert on it, but from reading I understand that 65c is the maximum temperature before the water begins the process towards boiling and steam bubbles begin to develop...not only that, 65c on my tank is the max. temperature it goes to! And I would imagine that's safe for carbs as they quite probably get a lot hotter than that wedged in behind the engine on a hot day... but if you're a little concerned, perhaps run it a little cooler just to be on the safe side! Good luck with it...!

That piston cleaning was very impressive! The amount that was taken off in 15 minutes really surprised me, and then, with a slosh more, slightly warmer juice and a little more time, Presto-Chango!! Hiya Penny and Del - great video! I have had an ultrasonic cleaner for a couple of years and I've found it very useful, most recently in cleaning the parts of my Bandit's vacuum fuel tap during the process of rebuilding it. One tip I have for smaller parts is to use a small container (like a leftover pill bottle) - if you drill a few small holes to prevent it from floating, all the better. And if you have something really dirty and don't want to contaminate the liquid in the tank, fill a separate container with liquid and put it inside. So glad to see you've added this very useful tool to your shop! Take care, dear friends - take it easy, ride safe, and have a great weekend!

One thing to NEVER put in the ultrasonic cleaner is polarised sunglasses, modern sunnies use a film over the lense to achieve the colour and polarisation, the cavitation in the ultra sonic will remove this very effectively, ask me how I know . One the other hand ultra sonics do a fantastic job cleaning normal glasses , jewellery and watch bands, dont put the actual watch in there. I picked up one of this sized machines about 3 years ago, does a brilliant job on carburettors and as Delboy has demonstrated just about anything else, just NOT polarised sunglasses. Thanks for the video. Cheers

Have a look at my comment - Decon recognised that the original Decon 90 (around for 50 years or more) has limitations for non-ferrous metals and sensitive coated surfaces. They produced Neutracon, which they claim is for aluminium, zinc, copper, brass, silver etc., soft glass, coated lenses, polymer surfaces and other sensitive surfaces. Not sure I'd risk it on my posh brand new Raybans, but I might try it on an old pair that the dog has chewed, to see if that works safely.
@rickibenka9497

Interesting video. 👍 I've one the same size as that, which I bought for various projects. What I do is fill the tank with some water (over the minimum level of course) an use separate containers for different fluids I use to clean various items. In your case, you might have an old ice cream tub with water & degreaser and Penny might have a jam jar with her jewellery cleaning fluid or just water and washing up liquid or you might have a glass coffee jar with some other liquid mixture for cleaning up smaller parts. It saves having a large volume of the degreaser mixture sitting around. I suppose if you did just have it sitting there, Penny could still have her items in a small sealed container bobbing around the big tank getting cleaned, as it's the Ultrasonic frequency which is doing the work and it just passes through the fluid with ease. Just a suggestion.

'Enginerding' - what percentage difference between 'time spent removing crud' & 'time spent spraying/baking/riding it all back on'? One day I'll advance myself, all the way to stupid, learn to accept colours DO have a merit beyond their somewhat flakey attempts at corrosion proofing & maybe even get myself into Art College. Until then tho' - "Crud is cool, it has depth." : )xx
