40 day long trip across the Umnak Island
The Aleutian Islands are an archipelago of 110 volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean, part of the state of Alaska. Presently, there are approx 25 active volcanoes. The islands are located between Alaska and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, making up the dividing line between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
The main settlement of the archipelago of islands is Dutch Harbor, located on the island of Unalaska. It is here that most of the fish are caught, which is imported not only to the United States but throughout the world; the famous snow crab and fillet fish at McDonald's are from here.
One of the topics most closely associated with the Aleutian Islands is bad weather. The average temperature in summer is 7 degrees Celsius, and in winter it is about zero degrees Celsius. But winds and rains make this climate truly harsh. The islands are also known as the birthplace of storms.
There are volcanoes on the island of Umnak, which are active to this day.
On the northeastern part of Umnak Island is the snow-capped caldera of Okmok volcano with six miles in diameter. The volcano is just over 1000 m high, although it is not as tall as its brethren, it occupies nearly half the island. The volcano is divided into two calderas, formed by eruptions many years ago. A crater lake once filled most of the caldera. The prehistoric lake reached a depth of 150 metres. It would still be there if it were not for the speed of erosion and the eruption in 2008 that changed the caldera. It created five large lakes and many smaller ones.

I was raised in Alaska, my dad was born in Bethel in 1944, my grandfather was there during the Japanese attack and helped train the people of that area to protect their land best they could. It’s strange how America never talks about that much, these people died and suffered and were forgotten if you ask me.

@@standunitedorfall1863 Arne has never been to subarctic/arctic Alaska, so we need to ignore his opinion. Good boots and wool are essentials. I was lucky to be on the mainland, north of Bristol Bay. My advice would be to use the driftwood to make a quick structure next to some of those boulders; this would secure your tent better. A pistol to make noise, maybe a flair gun. . . something to keep the cattle away. [Or, have steak every night, lol.] Never knew there were cattle on the Aleutians. There should be Musk Oxen, instead, as they'd have no stupid bears or wolves to contend with.

This is one such place, but gosh, what amazing & utterly breathtaking natural beauty abound!! Such beauty abound, that I felt the intense desire to rewatch this (which I'm now doing), just to take it all in & come to truly appreciate the true beauty & majesty that is Mother Nature. This world of ours, our blue planet, is so stunning & precious, so we all have a moral obligation to take care of it, so much better, than we've done so thus far. I especially wanted to explore the geyser areas on Umnak Island. The closest I ever got was being on a fishing boat that was anchored in Hot Springs Bay for several days, waiting out a storm. On the other hand, I have been all the way to the west end of the Aleutian Islands, albeit on a boat. So much beauty there, but always out of reach for me, except for Dutch Harbor.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, we were very careful with decisions when to fly the drone and alway try to keep the batteries warm

When I was in the Navy ROTC we traveled to the bearing sea one summer. It was interesting. At the end I went to Adak island and flew back to my university

I love the community spirit of the people who live in Nicololski. I live in Chicago. The people here are mostly nice. They pretend to be all hard but they're just afraid and cautious. In Umnak they can be themselves which makes a huge difference. GOD bless them. I hope some of their generosity rubs off on us.

I would say the locals also been very cautious of us at the beginning, way more than you would be able to feel in Chicago, but soon as they realize your intentions, they are really open and welcoming
