From what I've seen in this video, the football (soccer in US) unsportsmanlike events usually are because the refree has lost the control of the match.

Rashford gets slew-footed with the ball out of play and only HE gets sent off. I get that there was a head butt and there's no option in that case but that's a classic example of punishing the retaliation rather than the original incident.
