Correction to video: François Couperin is Louis Couperin’s nephew. François’s father was Charles Couperin, but his grandfather was also a Charles. And in case you weren’t confused yet, François had another uncle named François. The François I mention in the video is often called “Couperin the Great” or “Couperin le Grand” which helps to distinguish him from his similarly named family members.

Among string players, there's a specific type of bowing called " louré ". I am a cellist. Thanks for shedding light on the origins of that term!

I've never seen videos about music so useful I need to grab a pencil and take notes before; that ended up happening for all the form and rhetoric videos, though! Amazing as always!

Man I can't believe I just discovered this channel, this is absolute gold! I honestly hope it hasn't died, I see the most recent video was 4 months ago; so if the owner of the channel sees this, know at least one person appreciated stumbling upon your work :)

Great video, and I agree that Brahms probably did know of its existence as he was known to study earlier music intensively...I also think that approaching that sonata with this in mind is a novel idea worth exploring further

I agree, I just felt it wise to not present it as a fact. One can’t assume that just because publishers didn’t know what a Loure was that Brahms didn’t.

Thank you very much! As a pianist and composer I couldn't think of more useful formats for a video. This is pure knowledge concentrated in 10 minutes. When I see your videos in my main UKposts screen I just jump in happiness. Please keep doing such a useful work! You are great!

Fantasic video as always, the Loure is one of my favorite forms to compose in! I hope to see a Pavane/Galliard video in the future.

These videos are doing a great job navigating us through the labyrinth that is the baroque suite! I really hope you get to videos on the movements named canarie, rigaudon, tambourines, air, etc. Thanks so much!

Interestingly as spanish I've never heard of the loure. I'm not a specialist but I think I have a fairly good idea of the rennaisance and baroque dances originated or influenced by spanish folk music (Canarios, Pasacalles, Folías, Chacona etc), but hearing the rythm I think they could have made the supposition it was a spanish dance maybe for its similitude to the Danza Alta, a rather archaic and slow rennaisance dance that was said it was the favourite music in the spanish court, or even a slower Spagnoletta (ukposts.info/have/v-deo/r6N1fHyNb66il2g.html to get an idea of what I say) , a delicious fast dance with usually the same melodic line, very tipical procedure in spanish folk music (as the Guardame-las-vacas or the Romanesca). Good videos!

Any recommendation for a book about barroque dances?
@MusicaUniversalis
@MusicaUniversalis Рік тому
I wish there was one book that describes all the baroque dances in great detail, however I haven’t found such a book yet. I ultimately get the information for these videos from several sources.

A good book covering the dances in the Baroque dance suite among others is "Dance and the Music of J.S. Bach." The book is admittedly more directed towards performers, but it includes information about characteristic features of each dance including stresses, rhythms, upbeat, endings, and even the dance steps for each genre. It regrettably does not contain any information about the Allemande, however, as the authors claim it is too diverse of a genre to pinpoint specific characteristics.

@@somatotomy I have heard of this book, unfortunately I have not been able to get my hands on a copy.
