US General Petraeus: Israel's war on Gaza to last for ‘months, not weeks’ | The Bottom Line

Israel has not explained what it seeks to accomplish in its war on Gaza beyond the destruction of Hamas, according to US General David Petraeus, the former director of the CIA and former commander of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Petraeus tells host Steve Clemons that the US has no choice but to remain a “steadfast ally” of Israel, lest China and other countries point to Washington’s abandonment of its friends.
In this wide-ranging conversation, the former CENTCOM commander added that “there are no hands going up in the region” to volunteer to manage Gaza after the war.

Thank you. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who was mortified by those words. I had to stop listening to this in the entirety as he was completely creeping me out. I suppose you have to be capable of killing to be a part of the American war machine/industry. Yet the coldness is chilling. I know that even in the war in mid heaven as written of in the NT, a seriousness, not joy, of what is having to be done, a determination and knowledge that Christ and His army will prevail, will still be fought with the protection of the saints of heaven in the forefront of our hearts. The people who live in gaza are refugees from Egypt that Israel let settle on there land. When you are a refugee you do not attack your host country or its citizens.

The choice of a motive language when describing the attack by Hamas, verses the indiscriminate bombing campaign by Israel is striking if you actually pay attention to it. They're irreconcilable if you're committed to reconciling them to the current Israeli leadership, and its priorities. I suspect that may be the problem.

Here's what should be done the day after Hamas is done: All stakeholder countries, especially the US and Israel, should come together with an economic plan to rebuild Gaza that includes two things: 1. An internal security system that doesn't bring threats to the lives of everyone inside Gaza by carrying out terrorist attacks, say much less the lives of neighbouring Israelis. 2. A grand economic development process that sees sharing the minimum $6B/year shipping revenues of the Ben-Gurion Canal with the Gazans after it's completed. Israel should take it upon itself to see that the new political authority fulfil the lifting of the economic conditions of Gazans through new modern educational institutions, manufacturing factories and tourism industries. Peace upon the Arabs and the Jews.

If you apply international law equally, then this wouldn't have happened. Wouldn't you agree General Petraeus ? Quoting Security Council 242; " (i) Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;(ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force. "

I have more respect for this General than any other US general. But one major flaw in his advice is that earlier variations of these hearts and minds strategies failed in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, etc...

It was always a lie, they never really tried to do that. You can't win hearts and minds when you're invading a sovereign country halfway across the planet and setting up a puppet government with no popular mandate. That phrase is a distraction.
