I am really enjoying watching your videos, Dami. You are the first person whom has actually made me really pumped about being an architecture student. I appreciate your transparency regarding the day-to-day responsibilities of architects. Other people's videos have been very negative and daunting, and I feel they are attempting to talk people out of the profession because it really is WORK. Thank you for making these videos, and I look forward to watching more from you.

This is like when you are in an interview, first you say something bad about your way of doing things, maybe you are always trying to achieve perfection and blah blah, but you highlight the solutions to that problem so that the interviewer knows you can control it. It's a cognitive bias called Anchor, it's used a lot in Sales, interviews and project presentations. In this case, you presented some projects that already exist so that they know that your project will be viable, but then you present the best of you in the project and create a Wow environment🤩 PD: This could be confused with confirmation bias, but it’s not.

What are the steps you take when drafting a building. Do you sketch first, before drafting digitally in architecture school vs real life, or do you just design digitally. what materials do you consider using for your buildings and why. Also, how does it affects the environment.

@@sunnybhimani2742 it depends on your project requirements. If you study a bunch of buildings in a short amount of time you wouldn’t fully understand how the ideas of the architect are combined and give the result of the building. Borromini took 4 years to design San Carlo Alle Quattro Fontane, Rainaldi took 2 years to design Santa a Maria in Campitelli. If you take those masterpieces and study them together in a short amount of time is way less worthy than just taking and studying one of them. Why ? Because the layers of complexity and the architectural ideas behind these buildings are related to the parts and the whole and therefore in order to understand the intent of the Architect one would have to understand the series of ideas behind the building. It will take more time yes, but the richness of knowledge after studying these type of precedents is just unbelievable. These type of analysis of precedents, if you love and have passion for architecture, will have to be undertaken during your own free time.

I’m a 2nd-year-architecture student. I wonder how you mostly focus on subjective of the case study like proportion and quality of space. I studying in my country usually seem most of my classmates done objective ways like the planing, circulation, zoning of space. What do you think of this way of studying the case study? I just wanna know how our differentiate courses are. I personally think both of them are important but the way you do is more useful to make the design out-standing! Thanks ;)
@DamiLeeArch
@DamiLeeArch 3 роки тому
You're making a really great point! Case studies of zoning / municipal constraints are equally important and ofc are ones we do here as well. The examples I give illustrate some strategies I've found to be effective in talking about and presenting case studies, but not necessarily in picking ones to do. Maybe I should have selected a more eclectic mix of studies, but this project in particular, was an interior renovation in Venice, where the external forces weren't a huge factor. I'm sure you've seen them, but BIG has some really great examples on how to create diagrams that distill the zoning/contextual requirements. Maybe I'll do a video on that in the future :)

This really makes me (as a layman) think how much work goes into an architectural project and how little of it is really appreciated by other laymen. Most people would think "library, let's make it a brutalist concrete thing". But a brutalist (soviet) concrete thing is really unfit for human consumption. Just try to study anything in an environment made of all concrete. And that's where all the details come into play, the use of wood, the use of space, use of light. Everything the laymen take for granted because they do not have the ability to discern any of it. They just know unconsciously whether it works for them or against them. But they cannot explain it. Mostly architectural students will take pleasure in noticing the details of another architect's work. Yet only real world use will prove these aspects to be useful features or just needless embellishments.
