V.S.O.P. II, also known as the Second Quintet, was a legendary jazz ensemble formed as a successor to the original V.S.O.P. (Very Special One-Time Performance) group, and it brought together a remarkable assembly of jazz masters. This band was a showcase of extraordinary talent and a reunion of some of the most iconic figures in jazz
history. The group was primarily composed of renowned musicians who had been members of the original Miles Davis Quintet from the 1960s. It included:
Herbie Hancock: A virtuoso pianist and composer, Hancock was one of the leading figures in jazz fusion and had a storied career that spanned decades.
Wayne Shorter: A brilliant saxophonist and composer, Shorter's compositions have become jazz standards, and his work with Miles Davis was groundbreaking.
Ron Carter: An exceptional bassist known for his impeccable sense of time and rhythm, Carter was a cornerstone of the rhythm section in many classic jazz recordings.
Tony Williams: An innovative and influential drummer, Williams was known for his fiery and inventive playing style, which helped redefine the role of the drums in jazz.
Freddie Hubbard: A gifted trumpeter and composer, Hubbard was known for his virtuosity and versatility in various jazz styles.
The formation of V.S.O.P. II in the late 1970s marked a significant reunion of these luminaries, who had all embarked on successful solo careers after their time with Miles Davis. V.S.O.P. II toured extensively and recorded albums, including "V.S.O.P. Live Under the Sky" and "V.S.O.P. Tempest in the Colosseum”. II's reunion was a momentous occasion in the world of jazz, bringing together a group of jazz legends who had helped shape the genre's evolution. This song was performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival on July 8th, 1983.
