Thanks for the video. The wife and I were wondering what to do with the 25 lb sack of flour in the freezer. Very relatable, you could be my neighbor. Gave you the thumbs up 👍 and a subscribe. God bless.

Have found that vac bagging sugar (white or brown) turns it into a big ol' sweet brick from the pressure on the bag. I've switched to large mason jars and use the attachment to vac those. The sugar is protected and not compressed as the jar holds the pressure away from it. Good tip for folks with the powdery workaround using paper lunch bags.

Thanks for the tip, been wanting to try it but we used what jars we could find for meats and vegetables. Thanks for watching.

@@ReelSouthernOutdoors Jars remain in pretty short supply, so priorities first. One can always hammer the sugar back into grains!

@@silaslongshot941 I guess that's a new meaning for one lump or two . Yea we had friends looking jars and lids, they would call and see what we needed and pick them up for us when they found them and we paid them back.

Save jars for canning, yes it’s packed tight 1 ting slit in bag and roll bag lessens it up.

There’s no need to vacuum sugar. I store it in a Mylar bag 30# in a five gallon bucket. As long as it’s dry and sealed to prevent bugs from getting to it. Great video.

I use the paper bags for flour, putting 3 cups in each bag. I cut down the bag, date it, put type of flour, fold it over, put a piece of tape on it to keep it shut and put it into the vacuum bag to seal it. This is all after freezing the flour for 48 hrs. to kill any bugs. In the larger vacuum bags I can put a whole 4 lb. bag of flour in it and seal it.

That's pretty much the same way I do my flour, I just didn't make a video on it as there are so many all ready. I guess maybe I should for those just getting started as I am seeing a lot of that know. I put flour, beans, rice etc. in the freezer before sealing as well. Thanks for watching and the comment. God bless.

Does baking flour do the same thing as freezing it? I'm just learning large batch storage so I apologize if my question is stupid. Is one method freezing vs. Baking better for sealing?

Oxygen does not harm granulated cane sugar. You really do not need to vacuum seal it. Just put the sugar in a clean, dry, moisture-proof, food-safe container with a tight-fitting lid and store it in a cool location where rodents cannot get to it. I keep my sugar in two-gallon, plastic food buckets because a five-gallon bucket of sugar would be too heavy for me to lift. Sugar can store this way for as long as the bucket lasts, which could be decades in a cool, vermin-free pantry.

Agree with you…….I have 3 1/2 gal food safe buckets with Gamma lids and that’s how I store my sugar……I forget how many pounds I used up in two years for just me and had no problems……. I use my 5-gal ones to store long-term items that I put in Mylar Bags and these items will not be touched for immediate use……..the bucket protects them even more………have to replenish my canned chicken….only have a few left 😂🥰

What is never specifically said anywhere in the video or comments below, is that when you are vacuum sealing a powdery substance like flour or sugar, or any light powdery substance, whether in bags or jars, it can be sucked into your machine and gum it up--or even kill it dead! You need to put a coffee filter on top of the powder in jars, to prevent it from being sucked into your machine. The paper bags work well, too, or even poking holes in the original packaging and vacuum sealing it in the original packaging inside a vac bag. But don't put flour, etc., into a vac bag and just seal it; it needs to be prevented from going into your vacuum sealing machine, which will happen when you have a lightweight powder. One good workaround for brown sugar is to only store WHITE sugar. Just add some molasses if you want brown sugar. That's all it is, anyway. There are many "formulas" online stating what the ratios are. And research the product APEEL--a shelf-life extending product put on literally all fruits and vegs by the packager, whether organic or non organic, Globally! IT CANNOT BE WASHED OFF. While it starts out as a benign vegetable product, it picks up heavy metals in the manufacturing process. Heavy metals are toxic and accumulate in the body. No labeling is required. FDA says it is okay, but used the manufacturer's info--a company owned by Bill Gates. Look online, research, and decide how to handle this for your family's safety: peel everything, protest, whatever. But RESEARCH it!

Hard lesson to learn, but a least you got that hundred pounds put up. I was lucky to have learned this before I got my foodsaver vacuum sealer or would have done the same thing. That's the reason I put these videos out, just trying to share what little I have learned in hopes to help someone. Thanks for watching and the comment.

10 pounds of sugar would last me about 10 years / I like the bag idea but I think if I’d buy a bag I’d just take out a couple ounces and then just vacuum seal up the actual sugar bag if it’s in good condition

Sugar doesnt go bad from oxygen. But fir long term storage buy moisture absorbers. Drop one in your sugar, flour, hawaiian punch.... moisture makes sugar stick clump. Moisture absorbers it seems people are forgetting. They are investing in bags but forgetting moisture absorbers. If its hot and summer u better put those in your bags with oxy absorbers or one day youll open bags and have mold!
@therd6811
@therd6811 20 днів тому
You’ll only get mold where there is moisture. If no moisture were present to start, it will not “magically appear”. You don’t actually need to vacuum seal your sugar or flour. Just remember that flour has a limited shelf life but sugar will last forever as long as it does not have moisture when it is packaged. Put it into a mason jar (or another jar that had something canned in it, so long as it will still seal and hold out moisture) and you should be good to go.

How do you do your brown sugar?
@ReelSouthernOutdoors
@ReelSouthernOutdoors 2 місяці тому
Leave it in the plastic bag it came in, poke a small hole in the plastic bag with a knife. Then place it in a vacuum seal bag and vacuum seal it. Do to the molasses in brown sugar it will dry out and become hard as a brick. To solve the problem, take the brown sugar out of the vacuum sealed bag and the plastic bag it came in a day or so before you will need it. place the brown sugar in a zip lock bag with a piece bread, close the bag and place it in the cabinet for about 24 hours. The brown sugar with draw moisture from the bread and become soft again. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the comment.

What are you doing you take all the oxygen out doesn’t become hard as a rock? Mine always did so I just reminded me some girl don’t have to worry about my rats chewing through the vacuum sealed bag

Yes vacuum sealing long term it will be hard as a rock. Most of what I vacuum seal is for short term. For brown sugar, leave it in the plastic bag it came in, poke a small hole in the plastic bag with a knife.
