@@mtheory-games You are confusing companies. Gabe and Mike Harrington left Microsoft as he says and formed Valve in 1996. Then they got help from another former MS man Michael Abrash at id Software to use their Quake engine for development. Later Sierra On-line came in as a publisher for Half-Life. Completely separate companies. Sierra would later become defunct in the wake of the merger between Vivendi Games and Activision that created the Activision-Blizzard holding company.

Lord Gaben was most definitely a MS employee and for many years. Legends say that he observed that the only PC software with more installations than Windows, was Doom (it ran on DOS, independent of Windows back then). This he realized that gaming and entertainment should be the primary focus. Microsoft didn't agree. Lord Gaben then left Microsoft and founded Valve and the rest is history. Now he has the power to install games on any operating system.

​@@asicveg Valve focus has never been making video games : Half life was just a glorified tech demo for their new engine, and so was Half Life 2 when they came up with Source. Orange box games (aka DoD, TF etc...) were initialy community mods, they just hired the people who made them and released the mods as paid products. I love Valve, they are one if not the greatest actor in the gaming industry, but stop fooling yourself with that "they are not giving a fuck about making games anymore" bullshit. They never really did. By the way since I feel like educating you further, Half Life Alyx was the biggest move forward we had with VR games in terms of technology. Proton, which is developed by valve, single handedly took linux from a trash gaming platform to being superior to Windows as long as anti-cheats aren't involved. Steam deck is the first console ever that's built with a "fix it yourself" approach : If something breaks, just order it and replace the part, they even have officiel guidelines on how to do so. You know how much profit Valve generated with Alyx and Proton ? None, those cost way more money than they bring in. Without Dota2, CS and Steam, such projects could not come to life. Idk if you're just uneducated on what Valve actualy does, or if you're just too stupid to see how important it is for the gaming industry, but either way you're a fool if you think Valve is wasting talents.

@asicveg they rarely make games, but everyone that they make is a banger, and they have left a legacy of it. They make bank off of VR, portable gaming, and Steam, so the incentive to make games is pretty low on their priority as the others make more money. Also its high risk to them as they have set such high expectations with their previous games on the source engine. They would have to create a groundbreaking engine and games to go with that engine in order to live up to the hype of their legacy.

Yeah they just tried to get people on the platform by giving away free games. Yet the UI and consumer experience sucks, and there was no other reason to switch to epic.

Oh, it was obvious to anyone smart enough at that point that Steam’s market share was dominant and would remain dominant. Other major companies had already tried to break into the market and topple them and had failed miserably. The money that Epic was willing to spend, and the deals they were willing to offer, definitely meant they’d carve out *some* market share, but they were never going to crack Valve’s dominance. Valve seized the market early, they built customer loyalty, and most importantly they’ve known how to not piss their customers off for a very long time. And there’s a heavy amount of value in that. So long as Valve never shoots themselves in the foot and screws things up, everyone else has been and always will be fighting for scraps. Epic has done a respectable job of seizing most of those scraps, but they’re still only scraps. Steam is the only one at the table eating a four-course meal.

The EGS exclusivity deal has also turned into a red flag for a game's quality. It turns out that people who have confidence in their game's quality, actually want to get as many customers as possible. Taking the EGS bribe nowadays is just a vote of no confidence from the game's developer or publisher.

I don't buy any Epic exclusive, even after the exclusivity period has ended. They're the only games I still pirate, despite having plenty of disposable income. I figure Epic already bought the game for me so they don't need my money too. I'd have no issues with EGS competing on price, features, etc, but exclusives are incredibly anti consumer.

Fools might, yes. What did he really do though? He made a form of online activated DRM, which in turn caused PC gamers have account locked games that they cannot trade, sell or lend to friends. His business strategy was to force the service on gamers who bought physical copy games, like HL2, which is the only reason it got its spike in userbase. He is responsible for making one of the most popular game engines, before effectively abandoning it and game dev itself, with a horrible company structure that lets developers do whatever they want, whenever they want, and where almost nothing ever gets done. Its where the joke term "valve time" comes from, as something that should take a short time to do can take years with Valve to accomplish. I'm not saying there is no good with Valve and what Gabe has done, but its not all great either. There were gains, and losses. Just too many people haven't seen the larger picture.

@@daethe It's not that easy. First you need to get users, then investment, then infrastructure, contracts...ect Valve was able to pull it off early by forcing the service on people as a form of DRM, which almost all the major publishers used at one point or another.

I have around the same age with my ID, and I'm surprised you would take that position. The service was so bad back in the day, almost everyone I knew hated it. We were forced to install it as a form of online activated DRM just to play some of the physical copy games we had picked up at the retailer. Yes its a far better experience now, but damn was it bad back then. It also killed our ability to lend games to friends, trade or sell (which you can still do with consoles titles).

I found the WON servers shutting down much more concerning at the time. The pre-Steam Valve and the community playing the games were so different compared to today.

Publishers know that used game copies actually cause more lost sales than piracy ever would, so there was a push to copy Valve and Console Gamers wouldn't have it. There's a relevant E3 event worth looking up where Microsoft got blasted for trying this while Sony bragged about doing the opposite. What all these players want to do is stop making products and sell it as a service instead. This is also known as SAAS, or Software As A Service.

Percentage wise indies lose as much money to the 30% cut as AAA devs do, the only difference is that some indies don't have a publisher they need to pay. Plus the 30% isnt' really an income tax, pretty sure devs still gotta pay their taxes.

Eh.. might be hard to believe but Tim Sweeny is far closer to "one of us" than Gabe is. From the offset Sweeny was both a gamer and a programmer, whose entirely history is built around games, game engines and the mod scene. He was a huge player in presenting games as shareware, which back in the day was a very pro-consumer way of getting games out there. Gabe was a producer at Microsoft who worked on Windows, and at some point decided to follow the trend of those leaving to start a game company instead. For him this was a business move. Two very different people, with different goals. Even now Sweeny continues to work on his game engine and focus on game development, where as Gabe shifted to being a distributor, a middle man position, for games while focusing less on what got them started on this journey. This isn't a negative portrayal of either, just that if you look at who they are and where they came from, as well as their interests, Sweeny is still far and away more in line with the "gamers", and maybe like many gamers he is not the best at socialability.

And Sweeney has done nothing but antagonise gamers with his storefront and statements while Gabe goes to Valve's held events and talks to devs and players alike even making speeches and being universally loved there. It's not that Sweeney is evil or anything but he sees the gaming landscape as nothing but a way to make his mark hence why he keeps antagonising steam,apple,gamers while not making Epic for on their shitty ass storefront, while Gabe doesnt have to do anything but tell his team at Steam to update the API and leave the gamers to ask for features they would want cause gamers will tell Gabe what they want. cause we love him.@@deuswulf6193

Tim cares a lot more about small developers than Gabe ever did. It's not Valve that gave indie devs the best game engine in the industry with the best royalty you could ask for as an indie dev. It's not Valve that gave millions worth of free assets to game devs. It's not Valve that gave free online service tools to gave devs. What has Valve ever done other than overcharge game devs for a bloated DRM platform? People praise Valve because it looks good from a end-user perspective, but the real customers, the game devs, are getting fucked royally by Valve because Steam is pretty much a monopoly.

Neither did EGS? Unreal is trash for anything indie compared to what Unity and Godot and RPGMaker to name a few have done for the indie community. Only thing that Unreal does well is very realistic and fancy graphics but to what end? most indies don't have the skills or means to make the games run properly on it and they even in AAA devs hands tend to be janky.
