This is a short educational video about the Copperhead that I made last summer. If you live in Oklahoma as I do, and all the way to the east coast, this is a common pit viper to be aware of when venturing into the woods. Although not as venomous as other pit vipers in it's territory such as, for example the Timber Rattlesnake, the copperhead should not be taken lightly. That being said, they are not out to get us and would rather be left to their activity of hunting mice and other harmful disease carrying rodents. So when you're out in the woods camping, hiking or looking for sasquatch evidence, just be aware of where you step and where you reach your hands. Do not attempt to handle venomous snakes, doing so can result in serious injury or death. Have a safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure! Thanks for watching!
Here is an interesting article regarding the cost of antivenin in the USA that I spoke about in this video.

I had a friend get bit by a diamondback here in Tx. A few yrs back. He took 1 fang in his calf above his boot, I believe he said his bill came to $186k back then anti venom was 9k vial.

If I lived close to the Canadian or Mexican border and was snake bit i would cross over and pay for treatment. The American health care system is a failure when it comes to cost of care.

Thank you for sharing about the Copperhead. We are moving to NC and I have been apprehensive about the Copperhead. Living in AZ now I'm use to Rattlers. Just had one at our front entry door last week and had it removed. However, I heard nasty things about the Copperhead. I had thought they were much more dangerous. Thank you so much for clarifying. It is greatly appreciative.

You are welcome! I'm glad you liked the video. Copperheads are very numerous in my area. I found the one in the video in my front yard. They are venomous but not even close to say a western diamondback. More people get bit due to the fact that they give no warning. They rely on their camoflouge to hide from predators. Unfortunately when someone doesn't see them and inadvertently steps on one or reached a hand near one they get bit. And many of the bites involve young men and alcohol. The famous "hold my beer, watch this" scenario. Fortunately very few people have ever died due to a copperhead bite. Thanks for watching 👍

Most people do not have a clue how to tell if a snake ia non-venemous versus venemous. On that neighbor next door app on phone too many people inneichmind,in richmond,va where I live are always posting messages asking what kind of snake they have found in their photos!
@BigfootandMore
@BigfootandMore Рік тому
You are correct. I have relocated many snakes from peoples homes over the years. I can't tell you how many rat snakes I removed from homes that the homeowner told me was a rattlesnake. many assume also that if it's in the water, it must be a cottonmouth.

Having grown up in northeast Tennessee 23 years of my life you had better learn how to tell difference between venemous snakes. We had lots of lakes. You did not want to have an encounter with a cottonmouth on the lake or running copperhead or timber rattler while out hiking in the woods.

I've had experiences with all of those kinds of poisonous snakes. Are there any coral snakes in Oklahoma? Because I thought I saw one when I was a kid. I knew the saying about red on black and red on yellow and this one was black on red. I've seen plenty of king snakes that were black and yellow and red. This was somewhat north of Oklahoma City on my uncle's farm at the pond.

There has never been a coral snake documented in Oklahoma to my knowledge. If there was it would have to be the extreme south east corner. I have found milk snakes which are harmless and mimic the coral snake.

That info about the anti-venom costs is absolutely crazy. Is there any truth to the stories of rattlesnakes stopping rattling due to increase in feral hog population?
@BigfootandMore
@BigfootandMore Рік тому
The cost of antivenin in this country is downright criminal. As far as the question regarding rattlesnakes rattling and feral hogs? I'm not sure.

I personally find the cottonmouth more aggressive in nature. As a teen I was young and dumb, killed my share of venomous snakes. Most in our pond and garden. But my mom was one of those that are unreasonably fearful of them. And actually there are exceptions, most snakes get more aggressive when moulting time comes around. Me, I liked eating fish and frog legs, the cottonmouths in our pond got in the way. The biggest cottonmouth I ever killed was 6 1/2 ft long. And about 6 inches in diameter in the belly. I had the pleasure of fishing on the mountain fork one time, and I smelled that musky smell so I was on the look out... but I was looking the wrong way. I turned around and discovered I was dead in front of a moccasin Den. Talk about getting the shivers.. 🤦‍♂️🤯 Heads on a swivel folks. Stay safe Dave.

I've had a lot of encounters with cottonmouths in my neck of the woods. Never had one go out of their way to try and bite me, but they aren't exactly shy either. 6 1/2 foot cottonmouth!? That was huge!
@simpled5755
@simpled5755 Рік тому
1. They aren’t aggressive 2. I doubt it was 6 1/2 ft long. Given the largest ever found was only 6 ft 2 in

It seems to me that a copperhead's venom would have little if any effect on an adult sasquatch
@BigfootandMore
@BigfootandMore Рік тому
You may be right. Most animals of any size swell a bit from a copperhead bite but recover fairly quick. I have dogs that have been bitten. They are miserable for several hours but all bounced back quickly.
