My favorite Verne Lundquist moment was the 2016 Army-Navy game, his final college football broadcast before he retired. Army broke a 14-year losing streak to Navy that year and you could tell Verne was tearing up at the end because he was so happy for the Army players. And then he signed off the broadcast with a wonderful speech.

GMU had two pros on the team, although, neither played in the NBA. JAI LEWIS the low posting forward tried out for the NY GIANTS in football and was cut before signing into EURO hoops, where along with an ASIAN and SOUTH AMERICAN stint, he played clubs pro for almost a decade. Also, doing a latter long tenure, but only in EUROPE for over a decade, was FOLARIN CAMPBELL one of GMU's guards. They had outstanding talent, just not NBA talent.

I grew up listening to Verne call all kinds of sports in the 1980s and to me he was always one of the best - but he was always a secondary announcer and never really had one niche to call his own. When CBS made him the voice of the SEC it vaulted him to where he always deserved to be and I am glad he gets the recognition now he always warranted.
@otaviofrn_adv3 роки тому
Likely the greatest #2 announcer ever. Not taking anything away from him though. He backed up some solid names while being great in his own right. Gumbel, Nantz, Stockton, Musburguer and, last but not least, Pat Summerall. But it's true: the SEC on CBS was the best thing for him
@zachquillian98343 роки тому
Just think about all the amazing moments in college football history that he has witnessed, it’s incredible!
@otaviofrn_adv3 роки тому
Not only that. He called the Cowboys games on radio between 1967-84 (a pretty good period for the Cowboys), he has called the Masters for almost 40 years (and counting, it's his only event now), he did NFL on CBS on both eras, being the #2 play by play man in the end of their NFC days and their early days as AFC broadcaster, had many years on March Madness as well, called some big NBA games when CBS had them too (like the 1990 eastern conference final between Detroit and Chicago) It's easier to name what Verne didn't got to call
