The father has the meeting with his daughter in his favorite diner, because he wants to have a sense of control over her in a public place where he is comfortable and she (he thinks at least) can't make a scene. But it doesn't work. He does not have the control he thinks he has.

Honestly I know at the end you’re supposed to be happy they can reconcile but he was so selfish and can’t see past his own self that he squanders personal relationships even to those he wouldnt be able to function without.
