@@Adam-lv1uu To smooth it out so it sits perfectly flush with the plates. If there's any gap between the backing and plates, you've already failed even if it's from grind marks. I watched an idiot on another video who said that you don't have to run a zig-zag or half-moon pattern to fill a large weld depth or width. Just slow you travel speed and let it fill. No motion is necessary. Such stupidity! I finally bought a mig welder so I can do vertical and overhead welds. Yes, I used to do them with my stick welder, but it was ugly. I'm 72 now and I've only been welding 50+ years, so it's about time I got into mig welding. I've done a few small projects, and I'm looking forward to more. I bought the Hobart Handler 200 so I can weld on my farm machinery and big projects.

I appreciate your demonstrating to how the test plates are beveled to a certain degree but ive been handed plates that some were "free hand cut" or were cut with a track torch but had sat up so long they were not only covered with rust, mill scale & other contaminants so while the welder has to grind all of this off there goes the AWS bevel. THIS IS VERY COMMON & IS THE REAL TESTING LIFE OF A WELDER.

Great video. Most "hobby" flux core wire is E71T-GS (or something like that) as opposed to this more professional T11 stuff you're running. I think the S stands for "single pass". But why can't you do multiple passes with it? Surely it's all just metal if you clean it up enough between passes?

Can you do a video wjthout shielding gas. What's the difference?
@seandugan4330
@seandugan4330 3 роки тому
He was welding without gas in this video, the shielding comes from the flux core of the wire he was using. That’s why he pointed out that he didn’t really need the cup but with his gun the cup keeps the tip and that was the only reason he had a cup on it. Flux core MIG welding is great for the “shade tree” welder who either doesn’t want or can’t afford to maintain gas bottles in the garage. It’s also great for out on the job when your working in say a high wind environment or working somewhere it would be difficult to transport a bottle of hoses to. One thing I learned very early on with flux core wire is to take care in how and where you store it on the job, as the cores tend to attract and retain any moisture especially in the power houses where is do most of my work, there seems to always be high moisture content in the air around them. Of course most all the welding I’ve done in the field is stick because most of the contractors (union signatories mind you) seemed to be too cheap or just flat out didn’t have the equipment on that job sight to provide MIG setups.

I'm going a 1 in plate......I wanna see that. Im so frustrated with these damn bend tests. But I'ma keep going till I get it just right. It is hard though trying your very best and failing. But I'll tell you what I learn a lot when I mess something up. I just feel like if I try my hardest I should be able to get it.

Run it a little hotter and let it cool off after every pass.

Props for showing us the screw ups. Not just cutting that part out and acting like it never happened.

Adam Theede usually if it’s in use for construction or x-ray tested it stays on. For a bend test they are cut off using a number of different methods.

Dumb question from a non welder? Why is there so much space betwen the plates. Why nit butt them up together? Stronger i guess? What do you do with the backstrap grind it off?

I don't know maybe it's just me I've only been welding with inner shield for 35 years.. and there is one major problem with using that type of setup that gas cone.. all your spatter will collect between your contactor tip in the edges of that gas cone and it will pull a huge dime-sized peace of coagulated spatter and push it right into your weld
