I was a daily rapid walker and swimmer before 2020. But, 2020 was the Perfecto Storm. Sedentary lifestyle associated with COVID lockdown in CA was followed by an accident and spinal surgery. At 80 and disabled, I would not give myself up to the dumpster of the aged. I decided to research. I bought a Power Plate. Amplitude was too high, even a the lowest setting. Fortunately, I found Dr. Rubin and Marodyne LIV. I purchased his machine. I am now using an indoor rower and an elliptical machine in addition to the Marodine LIV. I now realize that osteoporosis is my biggest enemy. Dr. Show and Dr. Rubin together. What a team! UKposts is a Godsend for those who cannot travel to them. Thank you both for your time and effort. When diagnosed 20 years ago with osteoporosis, I purchased a very expensive (>$8,000) PowerPlate. I used it for several months and my strength improved greatly. However, I had to stop because I developed severe positional vertigo, even with my knees bent. It is now an expensive decoration. I now have a Marodyne LIV and feel it is doing what Dr. Rubin said and no vertigo.

Dr. Rubin has published a research document that showed no difference between low intensity vibration and doing nothing at all. Your Marodyne LIV falls into the category of 0.3G, described by Dr. Rubin as non-functional (PMID 15040821, published in 2004). What I understand from other viewers and from the title of this video is that in the meantime Dr. Robin is employed by Marodyne. All of a sudden a device described as non-functional by Dr. Rubin himself becomes the device we should all be spending our money on??

He was involved in another company previous to Marodyne that wanted to build at 37 or 38 cycles because it could be made less expensively. He resigned and help startup Marodyne at the frequency he has researched for the last 30 years.His device is recognized by Europe, England and Canada as a device to help treat osteoporosis. Recently the US has certified LiV Platform as a medical device Class 2. He never oversells the device and what it can or can not do. Thank you for this interview. I did learn new things and found it informative. The one thing I would have liked to hear at the begininning is that Marodyne is a for-profit company and Dr. Rubin is its founder, so he does have a financial interest in the sale of this platform. I mention this specifically because he really slams the competitor product Power Plate, implying there is a 10g force with it and it might knock your head off. I may be paraphrasing. A lot of research has been conducted with the Power Plate and devices with similar parameters. There are differences between Power Plate and Marodyne, specifically with amplitude and adjustability of Hz, and each has its place. VT007 that I use can be continuously adjusted from 10 Hz to 40 Hz and has 2 amplitude settings, and believe me, my head doesn't fly off at the Hi amplitude setting at around 30-35 Hz. It sounds like Dr. Rubin is to be highly respected for his work and research, but his criticism of Power Plate must be taken with a grain of salt. Their research is to be respected as well.
@magpiegirl3783
@magpiegirl3783 3 місяці тому
Look, fair enough comment but I feel I would like to respond for the possible benefit of other post readers. It should have been clarified that Dr Rubin does have a financial interest in the Marodyne. It came about after his extensive research and I think he holds the patent on it. His comments regarding Powerplate and other high intensity plates is relative to the potential dangers of high vibration and/or long term exposure to vibration as has been researched for many years especially in relation to the use of machinery and equipment in the workplace. It is a very well established fact that vibration IS a high risk to health in certain situations and for that reason the ISO have standards relating to things like hertz, amplitude, duration, etc. The problem for the high intensity plates is that they are not regulated - I am not aware of any of these devices that say they meet ISO standards for use. The Marodyne does meet the ISO standards and is registered as a medical device. You say that you are able to regulate and adjust your particular machine - and that is a feature of most, but whether people actually understand what they are doing in making self adjustments is another issue. I think you would also find that most manufacturers of these devices list osteoporosis as a condition contraindicated for use. In relation to the research behind Powerplate, I don’t be;I’ve they have specifically conducted research on their machine and its outcome for bone improvement but I do know that there has been a lot of research on “whole body vibration” using such devices as Powerplate. The outcomes of that research is mixed with conclusions that they do improve bone density and that they have no impact on bone density. I was interested to read that in most of those research papers, they did use the settings at 30 to 40hz. I don’t remember the amplitude or the measurement of g force which is central to Dr Rubin’s point. Above 1g force is potentially very dangerous and until the vibration machines are regulated against scientific proof, we’re being left with tricky decisions to make. Dr Rubin is correct in saying that m,any of the devices do operate at much higher hertz and g force than is safely recommended by the ISO, so I take issue with your comment about taking his comment on the Powerplate with a grain of salt. Yes, it was an exaggeration used to illustrate a point. I have personally suffered vertigo from using power plates in a gym environment. The Marodyne unit does not “shake” you, as do most of the other plates. It sends vibration through you. So my thinking is that the vibration itself might be regulated to minimise harm but the actual shaking could lead to some nasty consequences such as detached retina, percussive brain injury (over time) and possible fractures of the spine. Given that you can fracture an osteoporotic spine by just turning over in bed, it is not surprising that manufacturers have that contraindication clause in their info kits. Vibration for exercise has been around for a long time.Vibration for treatment is a whole other ball game. My personal advice would be for people with osteo of the spine to not use power plates of any type but if they must, seek information on the most suitable setting.
@magpiegirl3783
@magpiegirl3783 3 місяці тому
His comments relating to Power Plate and other high intensity machines is relative to the extent of the vibration especially above 1g force, which is determine to be potentially dangerous. His criticism of high intensity machines is not to be taken with a grain of salt ... it acts as a warning of the potential dangers that vibration can have at high intensity or duration based on research used by ISO for determining vibration standards. Marodyne meets those standards and high intensity machines remain unregulated in that area. It would be better for the high intensity machine manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with vibration standards. Also of note is that not all of the research on whole body vibration using high intensity machines has been positive. The results have been mixed. Especially interesting is that some of the research was done using the machines within the 30 to 40hz range (not sure of the amplitude or duration) so may account for any positive outcomes. The high intensity machines require the user to regulate the machine, which is probably not a good idea given the user's lack of understanding of the process. High intensity machines cause the body to shake, where the low intensity machine sends a vibration through the body without the body and head shaking.
@marysteinborn6079
@marysteinborn6079 3 місяці тому
Full disclosure: I have no financial interest whatsoever in any whole body vibration platform. That said, I feel a few clarifications to the video and the above comment are needed. 1. The Marodyne LIV, Power Plate, VT007, and VT003F are all linear mode high frequency, low amplitude models. 2. The Marodyne LIV is the only model with an amplitude around one-fifth of a millimeter. The others have settings closer to 2 mm at minimum and frequency settings that include 30 Hz. 3. The Marodyne LIV is undoubtedly the safest for anyone with hip or knee replacement or other implants. It is also the most straightforward for anyone who doesn't understand how to adjust settings and just wants to step on it and go. 4. It is a mistake to say that there are only 2 kinds of whole body vibration platforms out there, the Marodyne LIV and the "High intensity" ones. The Power Plate is not an example one to refer to as a "High intensity" platform. A better example would be an oscillatory model that sells in the $100 range with a frequency of 15 Hz or so. Looking at the specs of the Power Plate on paper, the 50 Hz 4 mm amplitude setting is one I probably would not use, but the 30 Hz and 2 mm setting linear mode is very mild and not "high intensity".

Dr Clinton Rubin is the founder of Marodyne Liv. I tried to find independent trials supporting what he claims and could not. When I asked the company for such evidence, they provided several papers, but after reading them carefully, I found they did not support the claims. Excellent interview! Thanks for letting it go long, I would watch more too. (Although, admittedly, I am a bit nerdy with the scientific literature). I have already looked at much of his research, and that of others on this topic, and got a Marodyne LiV for myself. I've been using it once daily since Jun 13, 2023. I don't know if it's helping my BMD as I haven't had a bone DXA since I started and have only had 1 set of BTM labs (P1NP & CTX) so fat, which was after I started. I still love it either way. It feels like a massage now that I've gotten used to it. The first session was surprisingly invasive feeling as I thought people said they didn't feel ot much. I felt it everywhere, and it was different than those ones that make you feel like you're on an amusement ride. I actually wasn't sure what I thought of it. The next session was fine as I wasn't caught by surprise. It helps any sore muscles feel better and for me to self-align my spine. No, it doesn't do the alignment, just helps my muscles and other things (tendons, ligaments, etc) warm up so I can move to align things. I have wanted to do more LiV sessions (every 3 hrs when awake, whether I am working out otherwise or not, and maybe after or before a workout occasionally), but wasn't able to find if that was okay. Good to know he thinks it (Marodyne LiV) is safe up to 4hrs a day (which is much more than I was considering). My husband uses it too, but not daily like me. He says he thinks it is good for him. He has good bone density (+2 T-score), but feels it helps him in other ways. One thing is digestion mechanics. He says it seems to help with peristalsis. I forget what else he likes about it.
@magpiegirl3783
@magpiegirl3783 3 місяці тому
My understanding having seen numerous interviews with Dr Rubin, is that 10 minute duration a few times across the day at least 3 hours apart is the way to go. If you want to exercise for general health, that can be done before or after the Marodyne but if your exercise routine is specifically for bone, he suggested that it should be 2 to 3 hours before or after the Marodyne. This is because the 10 minute stimulation is the max time to stimulate the bone cells and after that there is no benefit, but they can be stimulated again a few hours later. He says 3 hours apart because in one experiment they performed, they found that previously stimulated cells were stimulated again after 3 hours. He has also stated that 1, 10 minutes session is enough to get some benefit. I do a Marodyne in the morning before a shower and one at night before bed. During the day, I am doing either general or bone-specific exercises. Hope that helps. BTW, your first experience of the Marodyne sounds a little odd. Maybe you have a greater sensitivity, but the vibration is not invasive or unsettling. I hope it yields good results for you.

Yes, those are my impressions too. My thoughts were (and plans now are) to do Marodyne LiV for bone, and other workouts for other health benefits, allowing them to overlap the bone refractory period.. hoping they don't compromise each other but rather compliment. When the other workouts involve heavy muscle resistance or intense cardio I skip the nearest Marodyne session. I have already increased my sessions from just in the morning to between 2 and 4 times a day (3 or more hrs apart). The 4 times seems to be working well for an active recovery day from other more intense exercises so I'm only doing very light cardio and/or mobility and stretching that recovery day. On days I go intense I'm keeping Marodyne to once or twice (morning and evening). And, of course, sleep is a biggie and I've been focusing on increasing the quality through consistency, better timed hydration, and addressing overtraining, learning how to avoid overtraining to begin with using tech.

That will be the determining factor for me as to whether or not I will buy one of these. Based on my own experience of using a vibration plate at my chiropractor's office a few years ago, those higher intensity plates are dangerous. I only used her as a few times because I would come away feeling like I was really rattling my brains and I would always get a headache. Absolutely do not do the Osteostrong vibration if you have vertigo. They use a powerplate at high g rate and you have to bend your knees to try to stop it going to your head. That is still not enough. I had a terrible experience with Osteostrong vibration plate and suffered vertigo that took a few weeks to settle. I would never go to Osteostrong nor use a powerplate because the vibration is actually harmful as explained here. The power plates on the market are not graded according to the ISO standards and I personally think they should be. The Marodyne does comply with the ISO standards.

I would like both of the doctors to look into and address the bone loss associated with SARS (that is severe no matter what the age, losing up to 25% of bone mass). Studies, even those that are 18 years out, show that osteoporosis is the most relevant long term complication, not improving after SARS resolves. For Dr. Rubin, what is the underlying cellular mechanism that does not return to a normal function. Since this manipulated Clade is now with the world, going round and round and round, trying to address this side effect is going to be as huge as it’s impact on kidney failure, identified by Washington University in St. Louis. I'm a 66 year old female and was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2018, and I purchased the Marodyne LiV almost a year ago for $4000.I've been using it daily for 10 minutes, as that is interestingly what the countdown timer is pre-set to when the device is turned on. I will know if it is helping when I go for another dexa after the 1 year mark of using it. The only issue I have is that at 5'2" and 106 lbs., the Marodyne stops vibrating between every 10-30 seconds, which is frustrating, and only resumes vibrating when I shift my body weight around to get it going again, which was recommended by the company.I discovered recently that it stays on for longer periods of time if I hold a 2 lb. weight in both hands. The only other point I'd like to make is that finding a hard surface to place it on, and out of the way because it's large, is easier said than done, as it is quite heavy to move.
@sheryl3268
@sheryl3268 3 місяці тому
Did they ask you your weight when you bought it? I don't know if they do anything about the weight, but I weight 110, sometimes 109, or 107.. and am 5'2" too.. and haven't had that problem of it stopping. I have had an issue with it not recognizing that I have stepped on, so doesn't start. That seems to happen only if I have moved it between sessions. What I did was step off and on again, and if that didn't work I'd turn it off, wait 60 secs, turn it back on again and wait for it to say GO and then END and then go to the standby dot before stepping back on again. Now I have a place for it and keep it off when not using it, wait for the GO, END, and standby before stepping on and haven't had any issues. One time i the middle of a session I had to step off to get the phone in the other room, and it kept going. It is supposed to pause when you step off, but apparently didn't notice (due to lighter weight?) My husband weighs more than you or I and hasn't had these issues, so it is probably the weight.. although he doesn't use it daily like I do. I love using it though. The timing of starting hasn't been lomg enough to compare tests to see if it's helped my bones.. but I love it for other things than my bones anyway.

The Marodyne unit is very sensitive to your standing position on the plate. If you move forward or backwards on your feet, it will stop until you readjust. Perhaps you are not aware that your body is making small movements? You could try holding on to a wall or bench whilst on the machine to see if that keeps you steady in place? Otherwise, I’d check with the retailer in case there is a fault.
@gemini5635
@gemini5635 3 місяці тому
My husband ordered it for me, and the authorized distributor asked for my weight but seemed to be concerned about being too heavy and said my weight was fine. My husband weighs over 200 lbs., and it stays on for him for the entire time, which is what led us to conclude it was my low weight. Many times the device does not automatically start when I step on until I shift my weight, and, again, starts vibrating when my husband steps on, so we think it may not be calibrated for a low weight. However, it also sometimes continues to vibrate and count down when I get off midway. We'll now be contacting the distributor, who also services the Marodyne, to see if these issues can be resolved.

I discuss this in all three videos. As an orthopedic surgeon this is very relevant to me! Always check with your surgeon as not all joints are the same. Joints that are cemented in may not be as amenable to joints that require bony ingrowth. Joint replacement was not a contraindication in any of the studies I reviewed.

Since then, he has had an ischemic stroke in his brain stem in 2018 and a five bypass surgery for his heart in 2022. He just had two balloon opened, so n his thigh and calf and one stent above his knee. I have read he must not use the total body vibration machine. Is that true? Still a skeptic about this very expensive equipment. Having used Power Plate & several lesser home versions some years ago now, I agree that they could be hazardous for someone WITH OSTEOPOROSIS due to their greater Amplitude & higher Frequency. Initially,after gripping straps attached to machine base while vibrating THEN experiencing BACK PAIN decided that might negatively impact my spine... & STOPPED using straps. Didn't stop overall until after a cancer bout, as I was concerned that increased lymphatic circulation might facilitate metastasis....not sure whether or not that's so... just decided not to chance it. Also question whether Marodyne really influences how stem cells differentiate. What does NASA actually DO to COMBAT BONE LOSS in it's Astronauts???

Oh my gosh … yes, definitely avoid the vibration plate. Even if they reduce the hertz, it’s too much vibration. You could talk to your surgeon’s office for advice? It depends on which device they have. OsteoStrong is a franchise for their own equipment which does not include a vibration plate. The particular plate at one location may be different than another. The one closest to me has 2 plates, only one of which is safe. If walking is recommended for you and is not a problem, Dr. Rubin says in here that low intensity vibration (1G or less) is fine too (as walking is 1G itself). The Marodyne LiV is 0.4G or 0.3G, so less than half the force of walking. Benefits come from the frequency of the vibration's simularity to what vibration frequency muscles make themseves when in use.

Spoiler alert: Dr. Rubin is a nice guy but even after 1 hour he still hasn't answered the question whether or not we should be standing on a power plate. On several occasions he says it's harmful, and at the end he says it's beneficial. Somewhere in the middle (41:27) he says we should ask the manufacturer. 27:26 "If you are silly enough to stand on a power plate" , 52:17 "yes, we have shown that vibration is good for muscle and good for bone" Dr. Rubin, please make up your mind. I've done my best to sit through this entire session and I'm still none the wiser.

He is a researcher, and most (good) researchers are like that in order to be specific. If you go back and watch the whole thing it should become more clear to you that he is making a distinction between specifics of vibration, as that distinction matters, and matters a lot. Most vibration plates are too strong, however he is claiming his clinical trials, etc have identified not only a safe range, but the most ideal strength for healing and health.
@jacquesmertens3369
@jacquesmertens3369 3 місяці тому
@@sheryl3268 He has published 2 clinical trials and 6 randomized controlled trials. The most relevant is a publication from 2015, with data from a trial with a power plate at 0.3G at 37 hZ, which showed no difference between the treated group and placebo. A trial published in 2017 showed clinically relevant differences, but there was no indication of the frequency and intensity used. If there is a safe range and ideal strength, I'd like to see it published. In the absence of such information this video is just a nice chat, but without any practical use.

@@jacquesmertens3369I'm not sure what source you are using to definitively state that Dr. Rubin has published 2 clinical trials and 6 RCTs, as PubMed is showing at least 15 clinical trials at least 8 of which are RCTs of various kinds. Additionally he has published literally hundreds of articles on various other studies he has done or been involved with. Unsafe levels for vibration have been identified by a multitude of sources, and it is generally thought that forces under 1G (where the low intensity distinction line is) are safe, while those over 1G are considered high intensity. What particular level above 1G is the line between safe and not safe has not been determined for anyone and everyone. What level of high intensity vibration is not safe will depend on the individual's health status and prior conditions. That said the ISO (International Standards Organization) has established and published some levels it considers clearly unsafe for workers. Because the PowerPlate has a range that goes into the high intensities, it is generally thought to be not safe for people with any type of bone fragility, or other condition potentially prone to vibrational damage. In terms of Dr. Rubin's publications and the Power Plate in particular, there is one from 2013 published with two others entitled, "Safety and severity of accelerations delivered from whole body vibration exercise devices to standing adults" that is probably most relevant for your particular question at hand. The discussion includes the text "Two of the three platforms tested, Power Plate and Vibrafit, far exceeded the TLVs established by ISO ISO- 2631, with delivered vibrations not considered safe for even seconds, much less minutes, of daily exposure."
