When Julie Andrews lost her voice due to a botched vocal surgery, the world lost...THIS. One of the greatest voices in vocal history silenced due to a medical mishap. What a tragedy!

That isn't uncommon. People of both sexes develop Vocal Polyps on their Larynx when their used that much. Whether you're a newsman, or a choral singer, the same degradation happens. The fact Julie Andrews got botched by a quack is a waste and a shame.😔

I believe it not to be a botched surgery, but rather, unsuccessful surgery. She developed the polyps from performing this musical nightly on Broadway. She has said she only planned on doing it for a year, but stayed much longer, thus damaging her vocal chords. It is still a tragedy, as her voice is unmatched in our time.

People speak of age 47 like it’s 77. These days 47 is not considered old, and there are plenty of women who are still attractive at that age and have no trouble getting dates. Julie Andrews is a classic beauty, and is still very well preserved at age 85.

@joannathesinger770
@joannathesinger770 Рік тому
Crescendo??? Crescendo, in musical terms, means getting louder, which she did several times, along with decrescendo, or getting softer. What I think you are referring to is the two-octave scale at the end. What makes that difficult is that female singers pass through two "passagios"--or "breaks"--during those two octaves. Being able to do that seamlessly meant that her voice was extremely agile...because we didn't perceive any "breaks". In layman's terms...she sang a LOT, transitioning through octaves....but...if you notice, she paused during each potential "break" and allowed her larynx to make that transition during the pause.

I was 21 when I saw the film at a press screening on the MGM lot. I didn't know anything about it except the logo. It would open exclusively at the Village Theater in Westwood and the Ziegfeld in Manhattan on April 2 and then go into wide release on April 24 of 1982. I've seen practically all the versions people have performed of this number and nothing tops "Le Jazz Hot" in the film. The way the tempo kicks in with the finger snaps is much faster than the way it's terribly slowed down elsewhere (even on Broadway). And it's all uphill from there. The dance arrangement alone is cause for celebration. I don't even mind the small inserts of the reactions by James Garner, Leslie Anne Warren and Alex Karras ("She's a winner."), which add to the suspense. They arrive too late to read their programs and the way Garner stops clapping is genius. "Le Jazz Hot" just builds and builds to it's orgasmic conclusion. The design and execution of this number culminate in a way that is simply stunning. It instantly became my favorite nightclub number of all time. And I was yet to see many more as my education continued due first, to the revival cinemas, then VHS, then cable, then DVD and now streaming. It still gives me chills.

I saw Victor/Victoria for the first time on the MGM lot too in the main theater at an employee screening. I had worked on the lot for about a year. Here is another story to go with this. I worked in the Thalberg building and in the basement were screening rooms. I happen to be down there when Lesley Ann Warren, and some other people came out of the screening room. They just watched Victor/ Victoria. Leslie was less than happy with her performance, and expressing that to the people she was with. The movie was filmed completely at Pinewood Studios in the UK and the choreographer was Paddy Stone (assisted by Maggie Goodwin). A lot of Paddy's fancy steps were missed by the closeups during the scene. The dancers rehearsed for ages and it was a shame that a lot of their hard work was not seen. I worked with some of the dancers in London between 1967-76 and with Paddy Stone on the Engelbert Humperdinck TV special in 1969. He was a real task master. He worked with Jack Cole in the USA before he returned to the UK. Irving Davies was his partner and they had similar styles when choreographing.

[VICTORIA] 'Bout twenty years ago way down in New Orleans A group of fellers found a new kind of music And they decided to call it...jazz No other sound has what this music has Before they knew it, it was whizzin' 'round the world The world was ready for a blue kind of music And now they play it from Steamboat Springs to La Paz Oh, baby, won't you play me "Le Jazz Hot" maybe And don't ever let it end I tell you, friends, it's really something to hear I can't sit still when there's that rhythm near me Also, baby, "Le Jazz Hot" may be What's holdin' my soul together Don't know whether it's morning or night Only know it's sounding right So come on in and play me "Le Jazz Hot", baby 'Cos I love my Jazz... Hot! [ENSEMBLE] Before they knew it, it was whizzin' 'round the world The world was ready for a blue kind of music [VICTORIA] And now they play it from Steamboat Springs to La Paz! When you play me "Le Jazz hot", baby You're holding my soul together Don't know whether it's morning or night Only know it's sounding right So come on in and play me "Le Jazz Hot", baby 'Cos I love my Jazz...hot! Love... Jazz... Hot! "Le Jazz Hot!"

Always appreciated when someone goes through the trouble. Although may I? In the second to last line It's not "Love... Jazz Hot!" it's the title... "Le... Jazz. Hot! Le Jazz Hot!"

"Jaz" was a word coined in the brothels in New Orleans by musicians who were hire to play in them. In those days, it was a Euphemism for Sex: "She's busy with jazz right now." And possibly where "Jiss" is derived from.

Nothing could be better than this cast and Julie Andrews was sublime, but it was based on a German film with the same plot made in 1933 at the height of their decadent era - think of Cabaret.
