I was just at the Booth grave in April. I looked at as many pennies as i could but i didnt see any with X’s scratched into Lincolns face? Maybe the cemetery had recently cleaned it up before i arrived. Im sure that this has happened but majority of the pennies are there to spite booth. That’s just a conspiracy theory based on the idea that Booth was tipped off about the impending arrival of Union soldiers at Garrett’s barn and took off before they could capture him, leaving his co-conspirator David E. Herold behind. However, upon realizing that he had forgotten his diary and other important documents that would officially identify him as Lincoln’s assassin, he sent James W. Boyd, the red-haired, red-moustached man you’re alluding to, to retrieve them for him. Boyd went back to the barn to retrieve everything as Booth requested, but Union soldiers arrived not too long after he got there and soon he and Herold found themselves cornered in the barn. Herold gave himself up, but Boyd for some reason did not. The soldiers burned the barn to flush him out, but he ended up getting shot and killed anyway and because he had Booth’s diary and other important documents on him when he was shot, he mistakenly ended up being misidentified as Booth by Union soldiers. Nothing but a fascinating theory based on pure speculation that’s been debunked by people who knew Booth personally who identified his body including his own family who identified his body twice before it was officially released to them for burial in their family plot at Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland 4 years later.
