On the edge of London, on a quiet tree-lined road stands Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop's former house, built on his orders in 1936-37 as a weekend retreat when he was German Ambassador to Britain. It is little changed from Ribbentrop's day.
A great many thanks to Philip Gardiner for kindly photographing Ribbentrop's former house, without whose kind assistance this video could not have been made.
Dr. Mark Felton FRHistS, FRSA is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. His books have formed the background to several TV and radio documentaries. More information about Mark can be found at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Fe...

I already posted this on Dr. Feltons call for assistance concerning this video, but in case someone is interested in a tiny bit more background knowledge: Ribbentrops grandson was my doctor for the first fifteen years of my life. My grandmother actually knew his mother (ribbentrops daughter, dont know which one though) quite well. She still tells stories about her being proud of being one of Hitlers favorite childrens and with how much authority she delegated random people around. She must have been quite the character. Her son though (my ex doctor) was, and hopefully still is, a very warm, welcoming and friendly person

A classic and well-known example ofJoachim von Ribbentrop's buffoonery took place in Durham Cathedral, in 1936. As the organist struck up the hymn 'Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken' in the version that is identical to the German national anthem. Thinking it was a nod to his visit, Ribbentrop stood up and gave the Nazi salute. His host, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry had to ask him to sit down (no doubt pulling on his right arm).

My ex wife and myself viewed the property late 80s when it was offered for sale. It was very reasonably priced as the economy was as today, in a slump and interest rates high. It did indeed have a swastika at the entrance. The eventual buyers when remodelling stripped back the false walls and staircase coverings (possibly added when the RAF used it) to find ornate swastika motif railings and other symbols and carvings. I seem to remember it was actually still owned by the Wesr German government? Who just wanted shot of the place. And if memory serves when they looked in the garage after buying the Property, Ribbontropps Maybach official car came with the property as no one had bothered to go in there before the sale? Now there's one that got away.

Re Ribbentrop getting his von, when living in Germany back in the 80s, it was not uncommon for my Dutch toponym last name of Van Zandt to be misheard as von Zandt. When members of the older generation heard it this way, they would often ask, "Sind Sie Adliger, Herr von Zandt?" or are you a nobleman, Mr. Van Zandt? This would happen with such regularity that one day I replied. "Ja, ich bin ein amerikanischer Adliger. Ich bin lesens- und schreibensfähig." This translates to "I'm an American nobleman. I can read and write." Needless to say, this quip raised a few eyebrows.

Thank you for your very informative background on von Ribbentorp. As an aside may I indulge you, and your viewers, with the story of my grandfather's efforts on behalf of both of the warring sides of WW2. His name is William Preiswerk and he was the military attache at the Swiss embassy in London. From the outset of war, the Swiss moved their remaining diplomatic corps into the evacuated German Embassy. My grandfather took over Ribbentorp's office. Throughout the war he flew with the RAF to neutral Lisbon, from there to Spain, across the Pyrennees - coercing on his way a farmer to using his horse and cart. He would then meet army officers of the Wehrmacht to discuss the treatment of Allied POWs, (whether they were receiving Red Cross parcels) on an airfield grass apron in occupied Europe. Return to London and go about following up on the welfare of Italian POWs held in the UK. His Swiss diplomatic passport, with so many visa stamps in it, is a testimony to this very dangerous logistical mission(s) - the welfare of POWs on both sides. He was also witness to the aftermath of the Katyn Woods massacre. When he learned of the final surrender of the Nazi regime, he went into his (sequestered) office, and broke into Ribbentorp's cache of vintage wine stored there, uncorked the best and toasted the Allied victory. The Swiss neutral ? Not in my grandfathers case. He got a CBE for his efforts, and kept very quiet about it, sadly.

a [Nazi] Waffen-SS officer who served and was decorated [by the Nazis] in World War II. Seems to me the dominant tone in this channel is the fight against, not the fight of, the Nazis. And when the latter is discussed, it's generally in the context of the former. The ideas to build a new anti-democratic class-society and attempts to install a new mythology, to implement a new variant of old Sparta's failed social model, to think that one people must rule the world, and there is no place for other values and norms, to think that human lives are worthless, are not surprising after millennia of a feudal ruling class in a conspiracy with clergy, basically with comparable values. Only, the "afterlife" got replaced by the honour of dying as a hero for the system under leadership of a new talking/preaching class that would not stand a chance in the battlefield themselves, but precisely know how to convince their subjects in losing their lives in there. There is no honour in that model. Exceptional courage would have been to resist all that, rather than doing what was expected by low-life criminals. And not being able to see through the fairy tales raises the suspicion of limited intellect.

@jpdj2715 for a good example research Mr Kűstermeijer. A German social democrat journalist, in and out of the concentration camps, where he met his future wife. First German reuter correspondent to Jerusalem, central to the negotiations between Germany and Israel for establishment of diplomatic relations. Offered the post of first German ambassador to Israel. Refused the honour as Mr Kűstermeijer wanted to write his books and be a journalist. This little known hero was highly valued by Israel.

@@yolandabrinkman2653 - Thank you. He's a great example to society and illustrates my point very well. Note that I replaced "German" by "Nazi". Their "Leader" was an Austrian. And across Europe old feudal upper-classes opportunistically wanted to join the Nazi movement - especially the family members who were not going to inherit the title and estate. And each European country had its own Nazi party with most of their members condoning, and collaborating with, Nazi occupation forces.

Definitely one of the more dramatic moments of World War II, at least diplomatically.

After his ambassadorship, Ribbentrop was Foreign Minister for seven years. Hitler noted that while his other advisers were cautious and he had to "blow them up," R always went for the most extreme position so H could relax. The Nuremberg Tribunal found him guilty on four counts: crimes against peace, planning a war of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He played a large part in the Anschluss and the invasions of Czechoslovakia and Poland. He facilitated the "Final Solution." Those who committed atrocities in France and Denmark reported directly to him.

Apparently, WS might also have 'entertained' JvR at the London apartment she shared with her husband, Ernest. @@markroycroft unless Anne Sebba had access to the files held on the whole WS/Abdication/Marburg files that are being held under an extended 100 years rule, she would not have been in a position to state categorically either way. The fact is, none of us are likely to know with 100% certainty as we'll all be long gone before the files are made public, if indeed they ever are. However, although they couldn't get conclusive proof, the security services were 'rather sure' there was more to the relationship than just 'meeting at cocktail receptions' coincidences. One thing portrayed in The Crown in the episode on Marburg is correct: they started restricting what went into Edward VIIIths red box everyday as they were convinced early on (later proved correct) that classified and secret information contained within was 'reaching sources for which it was not intended'.
