I think Basile worked well with what he had, obviously it was a difficult match and it was the first match too. To know you're facing your final match as your first match. They hugged like 2-3 times after the match, there was obviously a lot of personal emotions stacked to this as well. Which made me annoyed for reading all the insulting comments to Basile I saw in another video about the match. Khyar had a really interesting style. Is it his normal style or was it specifically built to challenge Maruyama in a way he wouldn't be comfortable? Because it looked like anti-strategy to me, to deny Maruyama of his judo more than express your own judo. He knew he wouldn't outplay Maruyama in gripping, position and defending that uchi mata, would've been stupid to run with that strategy knowing you're not at his level in those micro parts. If he had succeeded, I'd have said it was well played, he did what he had to in a contest. It wasn't beautiful judo but it was still creative and problem solving. Because you go to an international tournament to win the championship, not to demonstrate Kodokan kata. Especially you don't go into a tournament thinking "ah I face Maruyama, he's better at technical judo than me, I must play in his beautiful style and take an immediate out from the tournament, see you next time". "Everyone" does strategical choices and even sneaky little cheat grips and what they can get away with. But what annoyed me about it personally was the dramaticism, appealing to the referee and audience and acting like it was a show instead of a match, that doesn't carry you far and referees make a mental note about it against you. If you appeal, you gotta do it so that you don't look like a clown but someone who deserves justice. Khyar made himself look like the villain who tries to trick through a loophole in his appeal, the judgment wasn't even questionable. But I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. Judging by the highlights he was the closest to take Maruyama out. Excluding Takeoka who didn't seem to be threatened by him as much as the others (maybe living in the japanese system you get comfortable about the gripping and uchi matas). Attempting that style againast Maruyama would've landed Khyar a quick loss in 30 seconds. It was cool to see how well balanced Maruyama is in terms of keeping his cool, focusing on his judo and when Khyar ran out of tricks and wiggle room with shidos, he hit the go button confidently, he knew he had him in the trap. Maruyama didn't hesitate because Khyar's play was difficult and off-putting, he didn't get frustrated. He just calculated if he can stay in the game and how long he has to choke the wiggle room and extend his life by shidos, until he gets to go in.

I hope Khyar didn’t go out there with that mindset. It’s why I respect Basile so much more. Even if he isn’t better than Maruyama, he will try and will train to try and be better, even if he doesn’t get there in the end.

@@JudoHighlights2015 that should certainly be the goal to improve for future in my opinion as well. I like the technical and beautiful judo way over brutish judo and playing around the rules. If I got to choose, I wouldn't watch a match like Maruyama - Khyar, I'd want to see amazing technicians focusing solely on winning grips and executing great ippons (and I wish we got to see more newaza like Canto - Stevens matches where they'd go over multiple positions and a bit back and forth in a single engagement). I think your criticism on Khyar was fair. I've heard people treat these tournaments in different ways too. Like the US team last decade treated many of the tournaments as just practice and had the goal set to another competition. Seems like the Finnish team is also currently just trying to get as many tournaments under the belt as they can. I wonder how many athletes have that mindset currently? Is Paris Grand Slam make it or break it for some athletes trying to get to the olympic games so they'd have to go for the wins by any means?
@fortuna9074
@fortuna9074 3 місяці тому
@Yupppi Calling Khyar's judo "brutish" or "playing around the rules" seems crazy to me. There is a big difference between aggressive kumi-kata and "brutish" because the former actually requires a lot of technique. "He [Khyar] knew he wouldn't outplay Maruyama in gripping, position and defending that uchi mata, would've been stupid to run with that strategy knowing you're not at his level in those micro parts", well Khyar did outplay Maruyama in the gripping/positioning department quite a few times during this match, it didn't result in big throws because the Japanese used fake attacks and dropped to his knees to reset the contest, and despite that Khyar almost threw Maruyama with one uchimata and one ura nage (not appearing on the video above).

@Yupppi

Seems pretty common to see that the third shido is much harder to get. Partially because two shidos already makes them interact more and then the referee doesn't want to end the match in three shidos if they are still making moves. In that fashion I don't think it was out of question to have awarded Khyar with a third shido either, but as it played out, we got to see it end in an ippon after grip fighting, which is sort of the desired outcome.

If tori pushes uke outside of the contest area, it's actually tori that gets a shido. It's clearly stated in the rules 18.1.1. "5. Without there being an attack engaged in a valid position (see Article 5 - Exceptions): • In tachi-waza to go intentionally or intentionally force the opponent to go outside the contest area" Khyar intentionally pushed Maruyama outside the contest area, so in that case the rules say Khyar should be getting shidos.

1, you can not play judo by running away from the opponent. And its sad to watch… 2, shido is for punishment, not the tool to win the match, if you guys learn the judo rules ( attempt to push someone out of the mat is getting shido) this is not sumo. 😂 The difference is the traditional judo will try to win with judo technique. To win with Shido is not wining. You don’t gain anything. You don’t get anyone heart by doing that. This video is great. You really make the point of what happened now in judo world. People try to think of winning too much without training the core of Judo. I don’t even know what sport the French guy actually did….Whatever the people comment that it’s his strategy but it’s not Judo. Imagine if everyone plays like that just to win with shido. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Look how both japan playing judo in the end, that’s how it should be but well I’m still glad that everyone learns judo. Hey, love your content and your commentary, and as your viewer I got a commentary tip for you. Sometimes you talk too close or over throws. For example at 1:00 you were talking about Maruyama outclassing Basile, then you started to correct yourself or something like that and it got in the way of the throw, it's much better to leave that stuff to when not much is happening and when a big throw is coming up just tell us that and not much else. Moreover, the last time I have seen such strategies was during competitions of my own when I was about 14 or 15 years old... Judo noob here but it seems they need to modify the rules a bit to discourage this type of behavior. Khyar is gaming the system but he didn't design it. I think a real bottleneck is the point system, just make it ippon only until the time limit and then golden score. You don't need shidos for stepping out or dropping down. The fact that you can "win" by shidos means it will inevitably be gamed.
@fennec812
@fennec812 3 місяці тому
It’s tough. Shido’s really exist to try an push action, while I don’t necessarily disagree with your suggestion, I think the “gaming” you would see in that rule set would be a lot of stalling before Golden Score. Honestly, I think this is a case where the ref would be in his rights to be a bit bolder. In cases like the one in video, it was very obvious what was up and I think the ref really ought to have the power to just jump to the point where a player gets verbally warned about getting DQ’d if he doesn’t properly engage.
@guitarazn90210
@guitarazn90210 3 місяці тому
@@fennec812 Stalling usually occurs when a player is in the lead with points or shidos. If you remove points, the only way to win is through Judo. Winning by shido is just ridiculous for a combat sport, it's evidence of a serious flaw.

9:46 Maruyama is with one knee on the ground. Should this be considered a score? For example if you are playing in +100 and you are 10 or 20 kilos heavier you can obviously do this ,,Technique''. I asked my trainer and he said: Today this is a score, but in his time that was nothing.
@paulstarstarpaul5700
@paulstarstarpaul5700 3 місяці тому
Why shouldn’t it be a score? I mean it’s not Takeoka‘s fault that Maruyama put his knee on the ground. If this wasn’t a score it would basically encourage people to go or „escape“ to the ground in order to not be thrown.

@user-qz5ym9zy8j 3 місяці тому

@paulstarstarpaul5700
@paulstarstarpaul5700 3 місяці тому
@@user-qz5ym9zy8j okay so the sequence is: Maruyama attacks, Takeoka blocks, therefore Maruyama stops the attack because he doesn’t have control anymore and starts to go to the ground therefore his knee touches the ground, Takeoka uses the fact that he has control and basically makes a sacrifice throw backwards. So in summary Maruyama has no control at all and he doesn’t throw at all so it can’t be a score for Maruyama. Takeoka has complete control, he throws Maruyama on his back with considerable force. Therefore all criteria for Ippon are fulfilled. The only remaining argument would be that Takeoka countered Maruyama by using his back which as far as I know wouldn’t be a score under the current IJF ruleset. However if you look at the situation again you will notice that it wasn’t a counter because Maruyama wasn’t attacking anymore at all. He had neither grip nor position to attack and was trying to escape to the ground. Therefore it couldn’t be a counter, which means it was a normal sacrifice throw much like Tomoe-Nage is a sacrifice throw. Therefore: Ippon Blue

Nothing new from this channel being biased against French judo, even though it won most gold medals on the first day… The fight between Maruyama and Khyar is edited and doesn’t show Khyar attempts at ashi waza, newaza, sacrifice throws and uchimata + Maruyama dropping on his knees 3 times in a row after being awarded a shido precisely for that. Maruyama dropped to his knees every time he was outgripped…. We might have seen a beautiful throw from Khyar had Maruyama not done that. Anyone that does judo even at the amateur level knows how annoying it is to fight against someone that drops to his/her knees whenever tori establishes grip dominance. As for the intensity, I love that about Khyar (+ he was respectful towards Maruyama as shown when he shook his hand). We are not talking about a randori at the local dojo but about a world class event in preparation to the Olympics! He has every right and more to use agression to dominate his opponent. Furthermore, Khyar’s judo is particularly dangerous in close-quarters, he likes to break the distance with his opponent to use some of his favorite throws, so his agression was not “playing the game” of judo but a strategy to establish dominance and put himself in a throwing position… It was pretty obvious that Maruyama struggled until the very end of the golden score when Khyar allowed himself to become frustrated. I agree with Judo Highlights on that point, Khyar committed a mistake by focusing too much on the referee/public when the third shido didn’t come. Finally, although we all like “beautiful” Japanese style judo, if you talk with world class competitors, the very same we see on these highlights, they will tell you how they appreciate the technique and strategic acumen required to “bully” your opponent in competitive judo. In this respect, Khyar’s performance was definitely worth commending.

Because of your comment I go and watch the full match again and I still think how lucky Khyar didn’t get hansoku make with that attitude during fight. He shows disrespect gesture to the referee twice, pulling Maruyama Qi, walk around and out of the mat during the game. And I saw one match the guy try to give handshake and get disqualify, at the end Khyar also break the grip without trying to grip, that’s shido for him too. French audience cheering Judo like watching MMA match. It’s totally annoyed. And you are over exaggerated about maruyama dropping on his knee. He didn’t do it on purpose like Khyar pushing Matuyama out like Sumo game. French judo is very modified and yes I prefer beautiful throw than the shido wining. It’s the real win don’t you think?
@fortuna9074
@fortuna9074 Місяць тому
@@nanzywarali No, I am not exaggerating about Maruyama dropping to his knees, he did that consistently during the match. The rules of shido are there for a reason, you don't want to be facing someone that avoids being thrown by playing very defensively/dropping to his knees/making false attacks anytime that you take a dominant grip. So, I do think that Maruyama deserved a third shido. If he didn't play so defensively, maybe Khyar would have thrown him. As for the audience, judo is born in Japan but it is now a globalized sport, so it's time to accept that there are different crowds and cultures about both judo and competition all around the world. Plus, I've heard from an athlete that competed in the Paris Grand Slam that he actually loved the fact that it was not a mute crowd, it added a psychological element to the intensity of the moment.
