Some of my customers here in Glasgow area, have three phase supply (with the original cast iron service head) only using one phase to run the whole house (medium sized bungalows) They didn't know this till I pointed out to them that they would have no problem having a car charging point and able to use an electric shower at the same time! Certainly something i'm going to install when I'm fully off grid, interested in seeing the overall efficiency from what is being produced by renewables and batteries, to what is actually being consumed

That's not efficiency. Efficiency is about how much energy is wasted. I can tell you the answer right now without your installing anything. For PV panels a maximum of 23.5%, and taking in to consideration losses in cables and inverters, the overall efficiency is less than that. But the efficiency if you are off-grid isn't important if you are getting your energy from renewables such as Wind and Solar. It doesn't matter if you are getting 23% efficiency or 16%. What matters to you is, how much does it cost to buy the equipment, how much power does it generate, and how long does it last? You can push for highest efficiency in say solar panels, but that doesn't necessarily mean you will end up with the lowest pence per watt of electricity generated. In fact, those higher efficiency panels will probably cost more.

"produced by renewables and batteries". Batteries don't produce energy. They store it. The energy comes from either the national grid, or local generations such as oil, wind, solar, small hydro. I once met a guy on a camping site,he was in a caravan, and he thought it was cheaper to use the power from his caravan's leisure battery than use the mains hook up on site. He wasn't particularly bright, having left school with no qualifications, and it was quite obvious he couldn't see that the energy to charge up his leisure battery came from the national grid power - he didn't have any solar PV or wind turbine, so I didn't even bother to try to explain it to him.

Just as we move to smart meters everywhere and reactive billing for the domestic market. Looks like a nice simple installation. Bluetooth is a delight if you can have a local display without going into the meter box? Installed different CT 3~ meters recently. Different cable entries, different features, different modbus registers and limits on the CT ratios.. I want to load profile and measure power quality. Looking forward to more brown outs and harmonic issues so logging is the direction for me. The need for SPD is growing I think but this is the only way to find out.

Another step towards throwing our screwdrivers in the bin 🤣, And another peace of technology to go wrong and will cost a month’s salary to get fixed or replaced, just like the dam smart meters we already got. And with the cost of electricity go through the roof and another two suppliers gone bankrupt your not going to save anything on your bills. Nice looking bit of kit though. Great video guy’s as always 👍👍. Again no response must mean I am again right 😂👍

Metering is controlled by the DNO. If your power meter fails, they'll fix it. Also, digital power metering has been happening for decades. The only new part of this is the wago toolless connectors.

I would take the twist out of the 25mm tail so the wago connector makes contact with a bigger surface area.

If I'm not wrong, you can plug only one phase on it, and maybe keep the rest for a future upgrade to a 3 phase system?.

The WAGO 879-3000 is suitable for 3 phase loads or 3 single phase loads. There is one caveat, if the 3 single phase loads are all the same phase then the total 3 phase measurements that the meter can display are not valid (the individual single phase measurements are valid). If the 3 individual phases are derived from the 3 phases, i.e. as in the case of a 3 phase distribution board 'outgoing ways' then all the metrics are valid. Andy Turtle, Product Manager at WAGO UK.

Very interesting. I like WAGO connectors and the quality of their products. Can you give me an idea of price and source of supply please? I have an industrial application in mind with a 300A per phase supply.

Having managed computer data centres where energy is _the_ major - and obviously unavoidable - cost you always want the most granular monitoring you can get. So very much up with this sort of thing. But I do wonder where the installation cost / possible power saving break even points will fall. Gut feeling at the moment is this won't provide good ROI on domestic scales.

It's three individual phases. The meter will complain if it's three same phases, as it sees 0 degrees difference. It's expecting a phase angle.

I just don't know how comfortable I am with having a wago on anything over 4mm especially tail wires, I just don't feel comfortable trusting the wago mechanism at those ampages and conductor size, think I'll wait and see.

No. There are long term reliability issues with screw terminals. It is why Wago's with lever terminals have been certified for use in Maintenance Free junction boxes, as long as it's a genuine MF enclosure and the manufacturer of the enclosure's instructions have been complied with.

1. So how much energy would you have to save to pay for the meter? 2. If it was a metal distribution box with metal hinged covers the Bluetooth might not work. The earthed cover with the box would form a Faraday cage.

Energy monitoring as part of a wider energy efficiency program usually delivers very strong returns. The Bluetooth signal is initiated via the screen - you would be opening the enclosure door.

@@efixx Bluetooth is a wireless signal and initiates through a transmitter and aerial. The screen is just the interface to the controller. This setup is very similar to the smart meters and displays in a home. I would want the display visible at all times if I was energy monitoring just like at home.

All MCBs, RCBOs, Isolators should have a built in CT and bluetooth link. Then all circuits could be monitored.
