To those of you wondering about how this effects the ecosystem, they are doing this in the Waimea River in Hawaii. Every year, the high surf causes flooding that displaces animals, fish, people, and even plants. Annually, a group digs a trench like this one to ensure the safety of the environment.

Calm down UKposts environmentalists. Waimea River naturally flows into the bay. The high winter swell waves blocked the river mouth with sand. No water was lost that wouldn't have drained into the ocean. In Hawaii everything drains into the ocean, we're on islands. No species were lost, all native Hawaiian fish and crustaceans that live in the lower river region spawn or live in brackish to salt water.

quantumbits it's not a lake. It's an actual river. They are digging where the mouth of the river usually is, but got blocked off by high surf. The sand is removed throughout the year by the state to allow the water to flow into the ocean.
@DaRealMaverick
@DaRealMaverick 9 років тому
quantumbits I hate to restate this again, because it was in my original comment. The Waimea RIVER is supposed to flow into the ocean, but it was dammed by sand created by the high surf. Once again RIVER, not lake. The Native Hawaiian species that live in the lower region of the river, like exactly where it was draining from, naturally spawn in brackish to salt water. They basically opened a dam that was not supposed to be there.
@chemchemchemacky
@chemchemchemacky 8 років тому
+Maverick Quartero Rivers close naturally to the sea all the time - this includes when high surf dams them with sand (like you said). Ergo, that dam is supposed to be there. This could remain closed for a number of years, and the water would still remain salty. All rivers (and most coastal lakes) eventually run into the ocean, and this likely would have opened eventually by itself, but its not really good practice to go an open every coastal flowing river just to surf when there's no swell. These types of rivers (in Australia at least) are called Intermittently Closing and Opening Lagoons (ICOLs), and they serve a great purpose in diversifying fish DNA. As fish are trapped in the ICOL when it closes, they breed for sometimes up to years creating new genes and adaptations to those particular conditions which once the ICOL opens those new genes are released into the general population of fish. Councils often artificially open lagoons like this, and you can safely bet (in eco-wise countries anyway) its not done without environmental consultation. I'm not saying they're causing great damage by any stretch of the imagination, but I think you're pushing your agenda without knowing/listening to all the facts. And it really is as simple as, if you're changing the environment, it's going to have an affect on the things that live in it. In freshwater ecosystems, damming water for water supply (and of course allowing water out for the river downstream of the dam wall to exist) is called river regulation. This is a well studied affect of altering ecosystems, and it most definitely results in a drop in biodiversity - world wide. This isn't as simple as "greenies" not wanting people to have fun.

they have been doing this for years , I was a military brat, lived in pearl harbor from 72 till 76 and saw this happen a lot. Waimea Falls feeds that lake. formed by huge ocean swells pushing sand up as a damn, locals are just freeing it up. The falls dump a lot of fresh water daily. so its not unusual. not from flooding thats for sure

Any river near the Ocean flows there eventually, they create so called "Deltas" there. A Delta is something where the river transports sediment into the ocean, the transported material forms the Beach you see in the Video. A River changes course very often in those deltas.(Often in a timeframe of 1Million years and more). So no Problems environmentally, they disrupt the River and the very end and it is likely that sometime ago the river would have gone along that very path anyway. Hope i could help.

Every winter on the North Shore of Oahu the high surf dams the Waimea river-mouth with sand, and the heavy rains flood the valley. To counter this they have to open it up and since it creates some nice waves, surfing it has become a yearly tradition over there.

Love how people belief that this does hurt nature. Did you people even see how considerably small the trench even at the end was? The width was maybe ten bags of sand, the height between one and four. Give that river a few hours of rain and it would overflow way more uncontrolled than that. But then again, people on the internet are overreacting idiots as 90% of all videos with comments about "animal abusal" can show you.

@NathanPeckProfile
@NathanPeckProfile 9 років тому
The Waimea River naturally damns up with sand every year, and even without human intervention the sand damn eventually breaks and releases the water. By digging to get it started on a particular date this just ensures that surfers can enjoy it instead of it happening when no one is there to appreciate it.
@Svendehenne
@Svendehenne 9 років тому
Nathan Peck I have no knowledge about this, so thanks for clearing it up! But how does this happen? Naturally breaks and releases water, then naturally dams up again? Does the river start getting too "high" and start releasin water? How does it dam up again?
@NathanPeckProfile
@NathanPeckProfile 9 років тому
The winter tide and storms push the sand up into the entrance to the river, damming it up. Eventually rainfall causes the river to fill up to the point that it spills over the sand dam, and the water spilling over erodes away the sand, and it all washes out exactly as in this video. These guys just dug a notch to start the dam break early, during a convenient time for surfing. If they didn't do so it would have probably washed out some day when it was raining and the river spilled over the dam naturally.
@kingdre202
@kingdre202 9 років тому
Am sure that during the months that the river is dam, fishes come up to breed so by removing the sand out of the rainy season would definitely alter the ecosystem which could probably lead to loss of species.

Apparently they are hooking up a river into the sea. The river is over flowing so they are releasing the water before it does any damage. These guys are just basically connecting the river that is meant to flow into the sea, but it dries up too much during the summer to remake the connection. It's just built up flood water that needs to go somewhere. So this isn't damaging anything, it's helping.

I've live in Hawaii, and they do that periodically every few months or years. That is also only a small part of the beach. Waimea is pretty big, and there is plenty of room since most of tourist are at Waikiki.

I Loved how you all worked as a team to make the "wave pool" it was natural and the earth will reclaim its land, so don't listen to the greensquid's out there, they are taking down tree's and putting up water park's, I agree with lakisofolimpia FRICKING GENIUS MAN!!!! :)

Every year due to the winter swells the sand builds up. You should youtube some of the surf here. This happens every year and people dig a trench every year and re-release the river.

Great video! So I've seen this type of river drain into the ocean in Yelapa Mexico south of Puerto Vallarta.

This looks so much safer than those government owned wave pools that have hard ground. Sand is much softer :)

this is really nice tutorial for making waves! Now all I need is a sand beach, and a river rly close to it, but that should be a minor problem!

@santubaba yeah is a river i had been there, the natural river mouth is near that place, is one of the longest rivers on hawai so they just make another river mouth. That place look diferent now since the river slowly devour the beach untill some point

So if i'm not mistaken they just get the flow started and it widens over time? Crazy how big it gets!

Yeah... that tends to happen when there's a river flowing through your beach. The sand will come back next time there's a big storm. It's a bit like complaining about dynamiting to trigger mini avalanches rather than having big ones that bury people. Either way, the snow's going to come right back.

I've actually done something similair, it got pretty huge. I recommend doing this if you have a river leading out to the ocean. It's actually not very hard!
