The sound differences between the propane and the isobutane flames were due to two factors: One, the pressure differential-- propane has a much higher pressure, which is why you don't see it used in pocket lighters; and two, the position of the microphone relative to the cooking units. Because of its higher vapor pressure, propane will always cook faster. The trade-off is weight; isobutane containers are not as heavy and have a smaller form factor, better for infrequent camping use. But for long-term use, if you have the means to carry them, propane canisters are always best.

We bought the Stryker 150 (propane only) a couple of years ago from Costco. It super fast at boiling water for pour over coffee. We also got a small day pack that we keep the coffee grounds, propane canister, the stove, a couple of mugs, and other items. Our coffee "kit" is stored near the tailgate of our Jeep so its ready to go.

I did a little research into fuel canisters. An ISO Pro canister is about 20% Propane and 80% ISO Butane. Propane remains a gas at a lower temperature than the Butane. This allows you to light the stove in colder temperatures. However if you can't warm up your fuel the Propane will burn off and the stove will go out. If you try to put 220 gr of Propane in a thin wall canister like the MSR or Coleman canister the seams would burst . That is why the 1 pound Propane canister is made of thicker steel. By the way, jet biol makes a 1 l pot and a 1.8 l pot if you need more volume. The nice thing about Jetboil is that they make many accessories for their stoves.

I picked one of these up a while back & I love it, I use it all the time for day hikes & solo car camping. There's also a pot adapter with simmer plate that fits on it allowing you to use a small pan or skillet & the simmer plate does a really good job of spreading the heat out.

@@living4mylord On amazon, I just ordered a hamans outdoor gas refill adapter for filling butane canisters, this by itself isn't the answer, I'm still looking for the connections to refill with propane, I'll keep ya posted if I get it all located. I'm sure most of have common since enough propane will be perfectly safe to refill and use. I have friends that do welding on oil rigs and most that have been around a while always seem to use propane, completely different type of heat transfer, it heats the whole part where acetylene only heats at the point you are cutting. I think this is better for cooking but not for what they are doing. in their case they can just get the fuel anywhere or any day almost any time otherwise they wouldn't use propane for their purpose, availability is why. for cooking, my speculation is I think it'll work better. sorry, made this a little more long winded here than intended. I'll let ya know if I learn anything:)

Like you said, this would be great for car camping. I took a Jetboil to Philmont with my son on a Boy Scout backing trip. It was big enough for a 12 people. We had 2 going some times, but high in the mountains the fuel for JetBoil took quite a while to boil water of course. I think that Camp Chef looks like it definitely will be a winner on car camping though and it boils up to 4 cups of water. That is awesome.

My son bought a cook set at Sportsman's Warehouse that included two pots AND smaller cup all with handles. He also bought a Coleman multi-fuel camp stove. All together he spent about $40 bucks. ALL of this fit into the same small draw-string bag, including one fuel can. Most of his Scout friends had Jet Boils. On a river trip, he and I ate together while the other boy's dad had to wait. No difference in the speed of boiling water either.

The propane option makes for an attractive paddling stove option as well as for temps cold enough to require sleeping with your butane. I've been mostly carrying a 1.3l titanium pot for years. It's nice to boil enough for a full Nalgene before bed or to have enough water for a meal and two cups of coffee. The difference in bulk between a half liter pot and a 1.3 liter pot is....well it's 0.8 liters. Thanks for the heads up!

Propane and butane have about the same heat energy, (BTU per Pound), but the propane has a higher pressure, so more came out. Propane can be used below zero degrees F, butane stops around freezing. It would be nice if they made half pound propane bottles.

I never wanted to backpack carrying a Jetboil unit as I thought they were too large and weighty. I do use mine overland camping. I use a rolled piece of aluminum as a wind protector; it came in a plastic tube and I added a BBQ lighter, an air bellows, pair of chop sticks and a long titanium spoon. Considering all that it's very lightweight. We recently experienced a 34-hour power outage and all of my camping equipment was a life saver including a Jackery 240, Mr. Buddy Heater, Coleman single burner and the Jetboil stoves. Our sleeping bags kept us super comfortable at night with the house interior temperature dropped to 38F. I will pick up one of these Camp Chef stoves when it's available at one of several Walmarts in our area.

I’m going to take an early guess (before watching) and say the iso-butane will boil water faster than propane. I’m assuming because the iso-butane is a slightly larger, heavier hydrocarbon with a slightly higher boiling point. So it should kick out a little more BTUs. Assuming he let the burner completely cool off before using the propane so that the test started off evenly, I stand corrected and the propane was faster.

Indeed too big for backpacking but I might take it out on a winter hike or snowshoe trek. I'd already have my biggest pack and heaviest tent. Not counting ounces the way I do for 3 season outings. Another great use for this: ski/snowboard tailgate. Resort lodge food and drink is wild expensive and lodges will be curtailed or even closed this season due to COVID. Take your mountain lunch break at your car and cook up a hot drink and meal real quick with the Stryker. Keep it in the car all winter for that purpose.

I have used the grasshopper stove for backpacking since 1974. IT runs on propane. When backpacking with 18 other people we had opportunities to really put our stoves to the test..Others had Sevea ,gas stove, isolated butane stoves, as well as a number of others. We were at 10,000 ft and above every night for 10 days.Every night we put our stoves to the test.. Our coldest night was 12 degrees. I LEFT MY GRASSHOPPER stove with propane out all night. It was very heavily encrusted with ice.It started up immediately. My 2 1 qt water water bottles were frozen solid. We all started breakfast at the same time.Mine boiled first, the gas stoves took 20 minutes just to prime.Iso butane took forever.I had breakfast cleaned up and packed my back pack and was ready to go before anyone else finished breakfast. Quickness of boil is only one factor.I would still go with my grasshopper.,than any of the others.I still have it and the propane is the best!.Quick, low maintainance reasonably fast and works just as well in high altitudes as low altitudes.I used the Grasshoppers stove with high adventure explorer Scouts, church groups,Eagles scouts, and with my own family's trips.Never failed once,.No problems ever.Lights up consistently every time in every situation.!!!

Yup propane is pretty much the best choice for high elevations and cold weather. In fact thats the whole reason they created ISO butane (butane mixed with propane). Because butane by itself wont exit the canister in cold or high elevations. But, man are those propane canisters heavy! Unless Im hiking more than 13 days I've never had a reason to use anything other than isobutane canisters. A single 7oz canister is enough fuel to boil 500ml of water twice daily for 13 days at 10k feet or higher in my experience. That being said I sleep with my canister to keep it warm and have my setup optimized to get warm from the burner flame. You must be living in the mountains or have a pack horse 🤔. To each their own, im glad to hear your grasshopper is still working after so long! Impressive.

that stove, despite its weight, would be good for a larger group of 4 or more backpacking. meals and more hot water would be ready faster than with a stander jetboil. Also, for winter camping where you may have to melt snow for all your water, the larger size would be an advantage, depute the weight. You might want to take it out in the snow one winter to see how it performs in sub freezing temperatures.

@@raymondclark1785 true, but there are other types of canister fuels that work better and can also be used in this stove. Butane does not vaporize well below freezing, and has a low heat output, so not the best for taking backpacking anyway. Good for car camping fair weather.

These type stoves are great for use on boats, because they a stable and the pot locks in so it can’t slide off. I use my Jetboil to make coffee on my Kayak, this stove would work just as well.

@PaleoHikerMD, THIS IS A GREAT REVIEW. I'm here in the UK and we don't have camp chef. The almost exact version we have is the Jet Boil, except the lid closer catch. On an added question, I collect watches also. Can I ask what make of watch you have on your left wrist? Many thanks Jonathan

Great review! Not going to buy one, but now wondering if there's a way to interchange burners with my Sterno Inferno. Any chance you could experiment with that and do a video? As a side note, some of this stuff gets so big and bulky that you reach the point of just taking your dual burner Coleman stove and a tank of gas. 🙂

@@13ClaytonM I found a nice adapter from Redcamp, and I use it with an AOTU rocket stove. Works really well, but I found the design if the Sterno Inferno doesn't really allow for switching things up (other than an alcohol stove, which Ernie tested on another video).

@@cbobwhite5768 That is how much I bought it for 'in-store" about 8vweeks ago . It did include the larger propane stand and the smaller iso-butane stand. Fits with a little work the Primus , Coleman and Msr canisters . the footprint of iso is smaller than the propane . The propane assembly is rather tall , thus the larger footprint . overall this system is light and packable using MSR Coleman and Primus iso

I have some concerns aout this product. Is the insulated cover going to melt or catch fire? Are the plastic parts going to melt or break? I see most people liked it on Amazon but a few people had some issues with it. Use it for a while and then give an update on how well it holds up under actual work for several days.

I work in the biz, and we do see these problems but they are almost always user error... ie someone left it on and then forgot about it. When used properly - meaning turn it off when the water boils - they're fine. My original JetBoil is well over ten years old and still works great. The piezo crapped out, of course, but I always carry a lighter.

Whilst someone just starting out equipping themselves may benefit from the Jetboil patent expiry allowing copies to be produced and sold cheaper, long term Jetboil owners are unlikely to ditch ther kit to but a copy of their original stove. My Sol Ti and Sumo Ti, Minimo, Classic x3, 1.5l cookpot x3, frypan and pot supports continue to function as well as the day I bought them, quality lasts a long time. Whether as part of a dedicated vehicle kit (Classic and 1.5l cookpot x3) or personal geat (Sol Ti and Sumo Ti, Minimo and frypan, I love the stuff, its beautifully made (especially the Ti gear) and great to use (especially the Ti gear and Minimo). Were I a newcomer I would evaluate each of the stove types that met my requirements and choose on merit rather than price. Reliability with one's stove is paramount.

It small enough for 2 and 3 person tent camping in the winter, cold weather. in cases where you have to vestibule cook. Also as a backup for rainy day tent/tarp camping. While car/truck camping a larger "burner" option, be it single or twin burner cook stoves, are good, because you don't have to worry about any weight. In hot tent camping you usually have the heating stove to cook on. So this would be an in-between job, not for ultralight camping, where oz counts, and not for car camping where weight isn't an issue. but for basic winter camping, for bike camping, using small bike campers, for kayak/canoe camping. IE any place where you might not have the space or need for multi-burner stoves... where you won't be carrying around a large wood stove... and where you aren't exactly counting oz... this would be great.
