Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!

This video answered everything I wanted to know. Also, you have a great tone and it's very easy to understand you. That's great for a UKposts channel and a real gift!

Dude, for at least a month I have been thinking of making the switch to a framless pack. I somehow got to those pros & cons by watching tons of videos. Man I wish I'd find this video a lot sooner. Great info, you're super fluent and a funny presenter. Thanks!

Dan, this is the best breakdown of frameless backpacking I have run into on UKposts. I'll definitely link anyone curious to going frameless to this video for all the considerations you went over.

Agreed , the other videos I watched made it pretty clear that they were following a trend/pursuing novelty and didn’t give any substantive pros beyond a slight weight advantage.

Great points Dan. I just recently switched to a frameless. Going well so far. However, not 100% switched over just yet… Good stuff. Subbed. Cheers.

I went frameless on the PCT. Main cons: with no hip belt when you stumble over a rock or loose footing the pack will shift and you are more likely to wipe out and most are also made for average sizing, meaning if you have a short torso (mine is 15") the pack will just bounce on your butt all day long.

How the Hell did you carry a bear canister in/on your pack? Very unwise in my opinion
@kamwatkins1957
@kamwatkins1957 3 роки тому
@@RobertSmith-up9rz That was in 2001 and bear canisters weren't required, you camped where there were bear boxes. Have never had a bear in camp though...when in bear territory we cook our lunch and eat a cold dinner and always hang a bear bag.

@@RobertSmith-up9rz how do you carry it then?
@PhilAndersonOutside

@@christianb8228 My guess is odor bags or freezer bags, or boil bags, all placed into a stuff sack. At least that's what we did for years before bear cannisters showed up.

Great vid! Please add my choice of Mountain Laurel Designs to the pack list. Thanks. Simple is good - like Colin Fletcher called them, a bloody great sack.

Nice review Dan. I don't have a scar so a hip belt helps to distribute the weight between my shoulder and hips. It looks like a decent pack for frame less.
@mikegillespiemusic
@mikegillespiemusic 2 роки тому
yea man, great video. I'm still framed but... considering frameless just do not want the shoulder pain. Totally get your point of view tho. I want to use my hips to help carry the weight since they are MUCH stronger than my shoulders and at the center of my body. My base weight is 10.5... not including bear can or cold weather gear at which point it will climb to 14ish. So I am not quite UL yet. Maybe one day.. great video tho! Shout outs to those old external framed packs we all used back in the day!

A well presented comprehensive video with a great mixture of generalised information and personal experience. Thanks Dan! I'm leaning towards transitioning to the SWD Superior. Do you have any further thoughts on their packs since you made this video?
@DanGoesHiking
@DanGoesHiking 2 роки тому
Thanks! Since I make the video, SWD has made some changes to their packs, such as the side pockets, front mesh pocket, and a few other things. The biggest change is their switch to the new Ultra fabrics, which I think makes the packs even better.

I won't be going frameless any time in the foreseeable future. The nearest I have come to this is the Granite Gear Crown II 65, where the frame is removable, (also the hip belt, and the crown!) but whereas I've been tempted to give it a try I was pretty sure it would have been an unwise and uncomfortable decision. But that's because I hike in the UK where we have extremely changeable weather and we generally need to take more gear and therefore more weight to cover the varied conditions. Good for you if you can manage a frameless.

I'm here trying to figure out why a frame is necessary in the first place, but it's so ubiquitous that I have to watch videos like this to figure it out, lol.

Just about everywhere in California you see frame less packs. Last time I was at Lake Tahoe and Yosemite Valley it was like half and half.I do see nostalgic people wear Alice packs and expedition packs at lot less then in years passed. Perhaps it's different where you live.

I agree. I hardly ever see these "7 pounds with full comfort" guys on the trail and if I do, they seem miserable especially if it rains or gets colder. but that doesn't happen in Calf....

@@pgreenx I live down the street from the Mojave and Death Valley. Not much rain but it can hit 120 easy in Death Valley in the day (it regularly is over 105 ) and sometimes drop to to 10 -20 .
