At the grade school level just about any parent can home school. At the high school level a parent needs to have the attitude that he or she will learn together alongside their children. That's not a bad thing.

I'm not of the belief you have to be a teacher, but you do have to be a special type of person with the time and resources to make it work. It definitely doesn't work for most people, which is why we have the public system to begin with.

@toshland5687 why is it only the teachers job? Teach your kid by actually being with them not stunting their life through homeschooling.

Less Stress. I homeschooled my kids years ago. Then when covid hit, had twin kindergarten boys had sit 6 hours... not fun. A middle schooler with depression who refused to do zoom. I will never do that again. Homeschool is better option.

My cousin decided to "homeschool" her 3 boys. It was grossly deficient, and it set them up for failure, in addition to limited socialization. It can be done, of course, but it requires a lot of preparation and devotion. Esp. if trying to teach high school subjects, you'd better know what you're doing.

Parents just need to put effort and time into it. I find homeschoolers to be more educated and polite than public schoolers. I went to public schools and there was a lot of dysfunction and anxiety with us students there.

This is a less evil decision! Yes, it’s hard to homeschool your own kids but you will do better for them so they won’t go crazy at the public school! Go and visit some classrooms and you will go nuts! Especially when the low income families live… horrible!

It isn't a hard decision when no child can be left behind until jr. high where they get hit full force with the old school traditions like grades and hard work. That transition has been weaponized pretty hard by policies. Also, drugs in public schools doesn't seem to be an issue to politicians.

There are much better opportunities out there! Keep your kids home or enroll them in private schools! Remember: state funding suppose to follow the child and NOT crappy corrupted public education! The behavior of teachers during the pandemic was underwhelming to say the least. Their goal clearly wasn't to educate children but rather to hide behind remote learning, isolate themselves and play the role of being a teacher but not really caring if there were students on the other end of the zoom meeting. Parent caught on to this and decided they need to be proactive in the kids education if they want their kids to be educated and actually have a chance at a future. The rest is history. It's going to take a lot of work to restore confidence in K-12 public education.

If that kid is only learning what he wants to learn, that sounds a bit limiting. I support home schooling, but hope the parents are up to the task to push their kids. Otherwise, get out of the way of your child.

It's less about the pandemic but rather that school's are not achieving the results in the foundational learning anymore, their simple reading, writing and arithmetic is way below what's considered to be optimal level and class time is now taken up by stuff that is not giving them skills to one day be productive contributors to their communities and providers to families. Parents are kept in the dark about their children's schooling which is why parent's rather home school to spend time with their kid's and provide a useful education.

In a smaller class, it's more difficult for students to hide and get left behind. Having fewer students means that each one can get the attention they need from their teacher. They are also encouraged to take part in discussions and are driven to express their opinions. The responsibility of public and private education is to help teach kids how to survive and thrive which is the only job parents were born to do. Otherwise, you're creating wage slaves

There are homeschool groups all over the state. All (good) homeschoolers participate in these to different degrees. Many of these groups are very diverse because each family's reasons for homeschooling are different.

"Fitting in" socially is the indoctrination part. Making "friends" while failing 4th grade math in high school is the problem. A well educated person is the desired goal and primary responsibility. A special month for being Black or Gay led to illiterate graduates. The playground or neighborhood is where you learn about other people, school is where you should learn grammar or science. If not saying "be like" is "weird", then we need much more "weird".
