Chicago, 1927. A recording session. Tensions rise between Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), her ambitious horn player (Chadwick Boseman), and the white management determined to control the legendary “Mother of the Blues.” Based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, directed by George C. Wolfe. Starring Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown and Taylour Paige. Coming to Netflix December 18.
Director George C. Wolfe's adaptation of playwright August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is many things. It's a testament to the power of the blues. It's a story about artists who refuse to compromise or let social prejudices define them. It's a showcase for some of the finest actors in Hollywood, and it's full of all the human drama and excitement you've come to expect from the talent involved. Here's everything you should know before you watch Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
While the play and film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a fictionalized story about a Blues singer and her band, Ma Rainey was a real life musician.
During her heyday, Ma Rainey went by many names, but she's remembered as the "Mother of the Blues," honoring her status as one of the very first Black women to become a professional blues singer, as well as one of the first blues vocalists whose voice was immortalized in recordings.
In the first five years of her career, Rainey lent her voice to over 100 records, cementing her legacy as one of the founding matriarchs of the genre and paving the way for the countless blues, soul, and R&B singers who followed.
While Rainey passed away in 1939, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and is still widely remembered for her flamboyant costumes, her elaborate stage shows, and her powerful, raw singing voice. She's also known for frank and evocative lyrics, which didn't shy away from expressing Rainey's sexuality or her Southern upbringing.

A terrific movie with stellar performances from Davis and Boseman. It became apparent while watching the movie that we were watching a great actor who knew he was dying and was physically showing signs of decline while playing a character who was destroying himself, attempting to escape his reality and exorcise his demons. It is a truly moving powerful and spiritual performance

Chadwick actually had so much faith & he believed that he was going to beat colon cancer. Death wasn’t an option for him (this proves the kind of relation that he had with Yahuah). He was all about his artistry & he indeed put on a brilliant job (R.I.P.)🙏🏾

I just watched this movie and I must admit that I didn't know what to expect, because I've never heard of Ma Rainey. Now that I've watched this movie I've learned that Ma Rainey was a lesbian blues singer. Did something important about this movie fly over my head that any viewers can enlighten me with? This movie made no sense at all, the focus was on C.B. instead of Ma., and the character he played was an asshole, which he played very well. 🥴 But, what are we supposed to get from his character's negative behavior? He was obnoxious, scandalous for sleeping with Ma's sex toy, a liar, because he lied about it, he mocked and blasphemed against God, and killed a man, who he knew for smudging his shoe. That's the end of the movie and I'm like, what in the hell did I just watch!🤔 This movie has nothing to offer, the narrator of this video said that the story is fiction, so it's made up about a real blues singing woman who wasn't the focus of the movie, smh, this some bull💩! There are different variations of Christians in this world and he was said to be a Christian, but to accept that role and to display such conviction during his blasphemy against God scene in a movie that didn't require it leaves doubt that he was a True Christian! If this movie was something like "The Passion Of Christ" that scene would fit, because no doubt the consequences of sin against God would've followed. This movie sucks, Big Time!🥴🤨👎🏽

I personally didnt like the movie. I liked the makings of it, the details in costume and set. But the actual dialogue I didn’t like. I didnt like that it was just another story of oppression for all these artists. With no meat and potatoes to Ma Raineys story, its just a moment in her life. I found it sad and hard to hear the trumpet players awful life story and that he cursed God so much. It was gritty, and slow at first. What I did like was how she wouldn’t let her nephew’s disability stop him from contributing, that was love. But she was a hard woman other than that. Sure she had to be in her life, but I bet there was more to her than that just by seeing what she did for her nephew.

The movie was boring to be honest... this explanation video gave more information than the actual movie. How does that make sense. They put no budget nor action in black movies.

It's not an "action" movie, so how much action did you expect from it? Some movies are more cerebral, especially when it's a film adaptation of a play. Everything doesn't have to be excitement jumping off the screen. It's unfortunate that so many people have no patience or appreciation for true art these days.

@@Kindred04 I know about everything you mentioned. Although it’s a screenplay adaptation, it doesn’t change the fact about what I said. Boring, lack of information and disappointing.

Not cool? Everybody doesn't share your personal religious views. Those are the views of the character he plays, and he expressed them well. I personally loved finally seeing a Black character who wasn't blindly shackled by organized religion. All too often we are all painted as religious zealots who are too brainwashed by the bible to freely think for ourselves, and that's simply not the case for many of us. Some of us aren't afraid to think critically and rationally. And some of us shun religion entirely.

Did they really just use Chadwick's face...for clicks? Wow, okay. I know he's a character, but he's not the main one and really just decided he'd be the source for clicks. Sick fucks.

Didn't enjoy the film much..because it was more like a play, and there was barely any musical performance in it and no background music at all. It completely lacked the atmosphere expected from the story of a great musical performer. The film was very disappointing even with outstanding acting performances. It may become a cult movie.

That’s the point. It’s sticking to the source material, which IS a play. They actually added a lot of scenery to it to make it fit more of a movie style. This film was absolutely beautiful.

I watched the movie and Ma Rainey annoyed me all through. Her character was just too much and she had no respect other people’s opinion.

This movie was bad in terms of being realistic whatsoever in terms of music history. "uh 1 and uh 2 and uh buckle my shoe," c'mon lol that was absurd as hell. This is literally a stage play that is being performed in the wrong medium. Have to say, not a great movie at all. It was performed like a stage play as well in the heat of all its melodrama. I just wish the acadamy would stop giving out awards to anything with a stage script that happens to be in movie format. Edit: If I would compare this to anything, it would be an attempt at a Shakespearean play with a black cast whilst telling the history of black people wildly incorrectly for drama and romanticization.
