How cheap is too cheap? We're always saying a decent entry-level mountain bike starts around the £350 mark, to which a lot of people tend to suggest otherwise. This is true if going second-hand, but if you're going new... Well to find out, we gave Blake a few hundred pounds and sent him bargain hunting on Amazon, to buy the cheapest 'mountain bike' he could find!

At what point do y’all admit that if a person rode this on regular trails it would last a lot longer? Nobody buys this bike to ride the trail your are on. Very disingenuous. Man, seeing Blake send jumps, do wheelies and whatnot really proves that it's the rider's skill that matters, the bike is just an added insurance and acts as a conduit for that skill.

Well, he evolved his skills over the years riding proper bikes, not shitty ones. That is the key difference, with a shitty bike you can't evolve. It doesn't give you the confidence to go farther, you are limited.
@BFBMTb
@BFBMTb 2 роки тому
@@chrisstasinopoulos8895 actually, I'd say it's the other way around. Riding a cheap bike is similar to riding a HT. Imagine riding a hardtail down a black chunky trail with drops vs riding down the same trail with an enduro or dh rig. The dh rig will be more forgiving, while on the HT, you will have to use more skills to make it down safely and at a decent speed. On the dh rig, you won't really need to use your legs as suspension since you'll have plenty of rear travel. But on the ht, your legs are your suspension. So, on the ht or cheap bike, you will have to use more skills or it forces you to learn these skills. What is questionable though is the components and how long they will last on the cheap bike.

6.5 years ago, when I was a beginner, I bought a similar bike (even the price was the same). There is still one problem that is not visible at first glance: the washers between the links are plastic. Therefore, after 20-30 km, these washers are erased and the rear triangle begins to bend when you press the pedals. It's trash, not a bike. Good luck to everyone who bought such a bike. I absolutely loved it, it wasn't blazing fast or anything special, but it was good enough to have fun for the 6 years i had it, sold it to a friend afterwards who used it to start on trails and even with his aggresive style and many crashes the bike lasted another 2 years of very heavy abuse, after wich the solder on the seat post tube cracked and separated in two. This is a good video for beginners, I have always tried to tell all my friends to not go for the shiny cheap stuff. Since I build and repair my bikes some of my friends have asked me to work on theirs and sometimes show me that they want to buy something like this. I try and avoid these as much as possible, even the bolts are made of chromed butter on something like this. It is essentially a heavy pogo stick with a built in time bomb. I always recommend an older, heck, even late 90s stuff over these. You are more likely to get into mountain biking on an older but lighter and well functioning bike than something like this that can put you off the sport all together. Not even mentioning the potential injury you could suffer when Not if something snaps off. A good second hand bike could potentially be resold for similar amount that you bought it for if you decide to either upgrade or quit. This bike will be worth whatever the bike stand is worth after a few rides. Stay safe out there!

I rode my 1998 Gary Fisher yesterday. About 10 years ago I put a Dart II Rockshox fork in it, with 28mm stanchions vs 24mm stanchions. I've replaced the worn out drivetrain. With some 26x2" Bontrager smooth tires, it's fine for road, smooth single track, paved paths, and hard pack paths/gravel roads. It's a great commuter or kick-around bike. Your point is spot on. A used, major brand mountain bike can be safe and reliable. Is an older, entry-level, quality hardtail capable of X-games stunts? No. Would a person have a go ANYWHERE (within reason) bike purchasing used? Yes.

They were renowned for sudden and absolutely catastrophic failures! (unlike a spoked wheel, a rock could chip a 'spoke' and they the wheel would lose all rigidity, and fail like a pack of cards. Hey Bryan! You're right! It can seem a little daunting going to a bike park with experienced riders with super nice bikes. However, everyone is a part of the mountain bike community, and we all help each other out! Safe Riding! 👊

AS SOON AS YOU GOT TO THE PARK AND SAID THE WHEELS ARE FLEXING - I SMILED AND THOUGHT THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT - LETS DO THIS - the extra fear and built in wheel flex suspension makes it worth it - WOW this guy is a beast , i cant believe some of the jumps and roots and drops he does on this POS - love the sheet metal rear suspension brackets

Blake, thanks for doing this test. Good choice on wearing the neon yellow instead of the pink helmet this time. This way if the bike had broken up they can find your body. Rest easy, I look forward to part 2.

This has got to be one of the best videos ever on GMBN, I’m glad they went down the GCN similar idea. Can’t wait to see the upgrades? New front fork and rear, wheels and hydraulic brakes maybe a new drivetrain 🤔 so a new bike just the frame remains….

OMG, this bike is no longer a single-track vehicle, it leaves two tracks now! The wheels are no longer in one plane, most probably because of the twist in the rear triangle or the rocker link. Not sure if trying to upgrade is a good idea...

That's a premium feature just like off-road trucks offset wheel spacing so that the front and rear wheels don't go through the exact same mud tracks.

I had a Murray. Snapped the gooseneck on a jump. In addition to nearly killing myself I had to ride the 5 miles home holding onto what was left of it turning the steering tube. Man did I feel like a loser. 🤣 finally got my rents to buy me a second hand Mongoose Californian with me pitching in some cash. Now that was a lick a$$ bike.

I’m surprised (and happy) you actually made it that far without crashing. I was expecting one of the wheels to break in half on one of those jumps, with the way you said they were flexing on a easy ride up. The bike LOOKS cool, and would probably be great around town and jumping a random curb once in a while. For close to the same money, I think I’d get a Schwinn Bounty. While it’s not a hardcore mountain bike, it’s a way better option for the price, and a lot easier to upgrade, especially with the tapered headstock.

Give Blake any mtb he will ride like nobody. He so so gifted & can easily make the best out of the bike, be it cheap or expensive. He just made the cheap bike worth x2 of it price after the ride. Cheers from Singapore.

Nice to see you check everything properly before riding most people just throw it together and ride it straight out the box. Bloke I work with bought one of these, rode it a couple of miles to and from work and we didn't see it again after the first week. When I asked him he said the front wheel collapsed one night on the way home.

I used to ride Hyper viking trail pro which is available at Walmart for 400 canadian dollars. It also had the same issues as the eurobike, especially the suspension linkage hitting the seat tube. I'm glad that I moved on to a Giant Stance this year. 🤗🤗

What a great piece! You can buy an even cheaper full suspension mountain bike in the US. The difference is all the nuts, screws, axles bearing races are made from mild steel. Nuts round off and screwheads disintegrate, you can’t even torque the part to the correct value. Handlebars seats and bottom brackets would have come loose on your ride!

Reminds me of my first mtb in 88 a Rallye portage Canadian built it weighed about half a ton and had really short pedal crank arms so was really hard work to go up hills it met it's demise on a local building site in about 93 when I went down a big hill and caught the forks on a big boulder and bent them .
