When i've built houses and tree home i always put a cover porch the length of it. It's a living space, spring, summer, fall and some winter. Sometimes we get some nice days in the winter here in the Northern Sierras. I've seen this episode before but glad i watched it again.

If you keep a small pail of water and a towel by your door on your beautiful new deck, you can train her to give you each paw to dip into the water and towel off before she comes in. We did this with our golden retrievers. I had 8 paws to clean every time it rained. It kept most of the dirt outside. Also, maybe you can lay some pea gravel or wood chips on the ground around the deck. This will cut down on muddy paws.

Wonderful porch. You might want to try what I used with my German shepherd. Keep a small, shallow basin on the porch (you can even get something decorative) and a stack of folded cloths. The key is to keep the basin deep enough to swirl the dogs paw in before you pat it dry on the cloths. Swirling is quicker and cleaner than wiping them off. That way the mess and dirt stay outside and a cleaner dog comes inside much faster. You may want to keep the bowl on something like a welcome mat to protect the porch. Make the whole thing match your sense of aesthetics. Into wood? Pick up a wooden salad bowl, a big cutting board to sit it on and a wooden box for the cloths from the thrift store the next time you're in town. Into ceramics? Search the thrift stores or discount stores like TJ max for some nice looking ceramic bowls for the water and cloths in colors you love ( try dollar store or discount bath cloths) and put them on a place mat. Got at thing for terracotta? See what you can find in the planter section of the hardware store. Maybe matching planters for the cloths and a couple of plants and a shallow bowl for the water. So remember, swirl, not wipe for better results. Good luck.

I have a small (8x10) "she shed" clear plastic covered porch off my kitchen that is my favorite room "in" the house. I bought a beautiful outdoor rug made from recycled plastic bags and woven into an oriental design and then have just plain green plastic chairs. I have lots of pots with flowers, some on an upscaled back of toilet shelving unit -- a freebee -- and also on an old microwave cart that my son had damaged the top that I had to cut that part off. I can sit out there summer or winter, rain or snow, and of course in the sun. Love it, love it, love it.

I absolutely love your porch, love how it extends on the one end to make an entrance to your tiny house. The semi clear roof panels are a nice touch that lets in light without blocking out all the light. The porch is a beautiful extention to your tiny house which makes it seem more permanent.

Its gorgeous, i love the porch. Good improvement.

We added an extra porch matt (there are now two) - The initial one is directly in front of the door and is a kind of indoor-outdoor carpeting (kind of stiff with short fibers) and the outer one is more like soft longer bristles like a short brush facing up and we made it so it goes all the way around the first matt. The dog MUST walk over both matts on the way in (she can't get around them!) and it wipes the dogs feet quit efficiently! We do have to remember to pick them both up and shake them out in the yard vigorously every 2 days or so. But it DOES get a lot of the dirt and mud off of the dog's paws!! Good luck - NICE PORCH, too!

Your covered deck looks awesome and your dog sure is cute! I use to own a small two bedroom home with a covered patio and a spa . I grew honeysuckle on the trellis and it was awesome to be in the spa when it was raining and seeing the beautiful honeysuckle. It was my oasis!

Jenna, it's such a pleasure to see more of your Whidbey location. Your new porch is perfect for it. One thing about unwanted footprints in your home: be on the lookout for deer using your new deck for sleeping. No kidding! One of my friends has a similar location and regularly finds deer on her porch in the morning and in the evening. If she left her doors open, they'd probably settle on her coach or carpet. I live 70 miles south of you in Pierce County. 2018 was the 3rd driest year since the 1890s, with only 2003 and 1938 being drier. And so hot! Even if we have another hot, dry year, you will thank your good instinct and very tall friends for helping you add that beautiful porch! Thanks for sharing with us.

Love love love your new porch! The only thing I worry is that your roof isn't slanted, I know how heavy snow can be, but your boyfriend is an engineer so I'm sure he figured that into the structure. Plus maybe it is more slanted than it looks on video, time will tell how it functions in the winter. Your view is just breathtaking - what an amazing experience to live in such a beautiful space!

I leave a silicon doggie brush, and a hand towel just outside the door, so when I walk my baby, as I'm preparing to go inside, wiping my feet on the mat, I also have trained her to do her 'shake-shake', and it has become a quick routine to brush her quickly, and pick up one law at a time and wipe off with the hand towel, then I just shake it out, and back on their little hook the doggie brush and towel go. It sounds like a lot, but it only takes a few moments, and it's just become her expected routine... Also, keep a mat both inside and outside your door. It really reduces floor mess.😊

This is a very nice way to give more space outside.

It's so pleasuring to watch a home construction in video and so painful, costly and slow in real life. I did it with my ex, when my daughter Sarah just born, in Florianopolis South of Brazil. Today I live alone in a rented room in US, maybe one fine day I'll dream to build again. It reminds me a mix of pleasure and pain, a battle that everyone deserves to fight and conquer.

Others have probably already answered, but just in case: I taught our dachshund mix, Kona, how to wipe her paws! It was very dependent on catching her in the middle of a behavior she does already. She likes to scrape her feet through the grass and kick up clods of it haha. Some dogs do this when they're showing off for others, many do it right after they pee somewhere. Every time I'd take her on a walk and see her start to do this, I'd say "wipe your feet! wipe your feet! wipe your feet!" constantly until she stopped. Eventually she actually caught on that when I set her on the welcome mat outside and repeated those words, she should "kick" again. We practically have a monsoon season here in spring, so this has helped tremendously with the mud tracking problem. She's also learned "shake off" the same way, which is great to ask them to do before they're released from a dreaded bath. ;) Good luck! I can just tell Salies is a very bright pup, and I bet it will take even less time and effort to train her to do this or anything else.
