There is indeed a lot of history behind International Harvester and the Scout. My family all worked at the Fort Wayne harvester plant and actually my great great grandfather helped build the heat treat ovens there during construction of the plant. Between uncle's and grandparents my family had about 140 years of service to IH. It was a very sad day when construction of the Scout ended and when they closed down the plant in the 80s. My dad built and did a full frame off restoration on my grandfather's scout in the mid 90s to commemorate my familes history at IH, it was an insanely cool truck with a bunch of custom parts that made it something truly special. It was totalled by new owners a long time ago but the memories live on. I know most of Fort Wayne would have loved to see them build the plant here. But at least it's still American made. That's the same weight range as a new Jeep Rubicon 4-door and Toyota 4Runner. The original Jeep Wagoneer weighed about the same as a Scout II. The current Wagoneer is a pig at 5800#. And the old Scouts are flyweights compared to some of these new EVs. Rivian SUV weighs 7000#! I don't want to think about what the new Scout will weigh. Another interesting fact: Scout II is kinda small actually. Mine has a smaller footprint than my wife's Subaru Crosstrek. The Scout is shorter overall, narrower overall, shorter WB, narrower track (I think). But the Scout's sure as heck taller.

I really feel like we true “Off-roaders” suffer from range anxiety, more than most other owners. One of the guys in my community brought his Rivian on one of our easier “Nature” trails. This trail winds through some mountains and ends at a rural town about 40 miles (Airmiles, NOT GROUND MILES) away. It has lots of twists and turns and lots of rocky, uphill climbs. When he began, the Rivian driver showed that he had over 200 miles of range. We ended up having to bring a generator back from town to charge him, as his batteries ran flat a few miles out of town. All the uphill driving used his charge up a lot sooner than he thought it would.

I learned to drive in a Scout. I think it had about 80 horsepower? 3 speed, four cylinders. If you shifted into compound low, it would lug forever. It was sort of a convertible. If you un unbolted the top, and got three friend to help you move it off, you could sort of get the tires to chirp if you really hit the throttle and dropped the clutch. My siblings got to drive a Scouit II. My dad also took a look at an International Travelall, but decided that he wanted a vehicle that could get miles per gallon rather than gallons per mile.

I think EV's are great commuter, ridshare, short range fleet vehicles, even potentially a farm rig. Offroading/adventure/towing EV's seem to push the capability of that powertrain. I like Toyotas philosophy of using hybrids to increase engine longitivity, mpg, and torque. Is there market research on what customers use Rivians, hummer EV's, and other offroad EV's for?
@Offensivebeast
@Offensivebeast 2 місяці тому
I haven’t seen any data stating what the EVs like the Rivian, HummerEV, Lightning etc are used for, but from what I’ve seen from owners they seem to be the same pool of people who buy premium/ luxury SUVs, so you get a lot of them just being used as commuters/ family haulers/ tax incentives with a niche amount using them for off roading and towing, but in the case of these EVs, there’s a lot of negative experiences when it comes to the towing and off roading, but those same people seem to be very happy to use them as a normal a to b car.

May i ask how you come to the conclusin that hybrids increase engine longevity? Given i only drive 1 hybrid to this day, but it is less than a year old. (A Skoda Octavia PHEV) But i can't see it increasing engine longevity, rather the opposite: It always wants to start in EV mode unless you press a button to make it go into hybrid mode. So by default, it empties the battery complete and then from 0 to anywhere between 1500 and 6000 rpm (depending on the speed and situation you are driving in) snaps in the ice engine. The ICe engine has no preheating or anything, it starts cold and gets kicked in at high rpms when more power is demanded than the battery can provide or the battery is empty. Doing high rpms with a cold ice engine is not what i learned as prolonging engine life. Also constant starts and stops of an ice engine (like a hybrid does) also ins't good for engine life. To me the only engine prolonging way would be like Opel did with the Ampera (no idea how that model chevy was named in the US) or BMW's i3 with the range extender do: there the ice engine isn't constantly started and stopped and kicked in from 0 and cold. They run the engine to produce electricity. So the ice engine runs at it's most efficient rpms and basically like a static motor. No changes in load, no 10-20 cold starts per trip...
@Datastacked
@Datastacked 2 місяці тому
@@nirfz, Hmm I'm not familiar with that brand, my experience is with a traditional hybrid AWD Toyota and the ice engine is always running the moment you start the car. Toyota uses both engines to power the drivetrain, the hybrid assists and puts less strain on the engine. Plus you never have to charge a traditional hybrid battery because it's using your engine to stay charged .If I understand it correctly you're PHEV doesn't start the engine until you go pedal down?

Maybe they include a pack of folding solar panels that can charge the battery up 10% in a week of sunshine, so you could even reach a charging station after a month or so. It could be ideal for alpine refuges though. (the small buildings in the alps where hikers can stay over night) They people running them usually go down into the valley once a week to get supplies and then back up. (Usually around 20-30km one way) and they could charge it fully in the valley while loading up all the groceries. This way they make it up back up the moutain. And down again a week later, they recharge enough to make the few kms on the flat. (as i would expect it to loose charge like all EV's while standing around trying to "phone home" and stuff) But i doubt they will buy that, those guys usually use pretty old things with no modern tech in them that they could get rather cheap and run relatively cheap. (Like small old offroad trucks from the 70's and early 80's. Even old "surplus" military G-wagons from the 80's that got auctioned off for low money)

I had a 62 half cab and I had a 78 Terra Scout. They were very interesting, very simple trucks. Funny to think, they used medium size truck engines in the Scout so they were very heavy on the front. The 304 and 345 ci engines were used in the IH dump trucks as well. The 392 was put in the pickups and Travelall (suburban size SUV). very durable industrial engines and probably to much for the Scout really. My uncle worked at IH Fort Wayne when he graduated engineering school. He worked on all that and then transitioned over the the heavy truck side.

I don't know if a european brand can properly pay homage to the Scouts. I am worried that it'll just be another luxury "off-road" crossover like the new defenders and not a mid size truck SUV like the wranglers and broncos. Europe doesn't really do trucks, even VW's Amarok is just a reskin of the ranger. I don't want another glammed up 80k midsize crossover that went for road feel over genuine off-road capability. Take a look at what they are doing to jeep, every vehicle outside of the wrangler is just some uber luxury vehicle which doesn't fit with Jeep's heritage. From a literal utility vehicle made for war, to a farm vehicle, to an enthusiast off roader. Even the "Luxury" jeeps of the past like the original grand wagoneer were more on par with mid level luxury like an olds or a plymouth and not this mercedes fighter they are making now. I’m actually pro EV, but I’m not sure this is a good choice for a pure EV. A PHEV would seem to make much more sense. My Tesla is great for what it does, but I like that my Wrangler 4xe doesn’t actually create a problem if there’s no obvious place to charge. I also really like running under electric off-road, so an electric off-roader is actually appealing to me. However, we are about to drive to Yellowstone tomorrow and we’re taking the Jeep because I’m not confident that the Tesla would like being left unplugged for days up there and the charging options start to get scarce up that way. For an adventure rig, right now, we just don’t have enough viable charging options. The issue is not the electric drivetrain (in my opinion). The worst charging network was created by VW, so maybe they’ll fix that part of the equation if they ever want to be able to sell these here in the US.

Are they in an echo chamber or am I? I hear such mixed news surrounding evs. Someone interprets the data one way claiming they continue to grow in the market while the government seemingly forces the transition. Then, others see the data and claim these vehicles sit on the lot much longer and are slowing in sales to the point that some manufacturers are rethinking the all-ev thing and are introducing new cars that had been advertised as ev-only with now options to be an ice. This vehicle as seen in renderings elsewhere also looks like a miss and just looks like another bulky crossover. While I understand that regulations create a very difficult obstacle when designing smaller vehicles, how difficult would it be for someone to design and build a basic small vehicle with just a good old fashioned 4banger or v6? Especially if it were designed to match the former International Scout, it seems like it would sell like wild. Similar to the Gladiator. While it does seem like it sells well, it’s just a swing and a miss to me. It should have not had the back seat and been several feet shorter much like its own predecessor. At least Ford (with the Bronco) stayed true to the styling of the old Bronco (unlike Chevy just slapping Blazer on another crossover). Eh. It’d be awesome if they took the basic 2-door Wrangler, made it a little smaller, and made it as retro as possible.

The last good original design was the BD-240 inline 6 which was fazed out around 1960 or so. Power and torque curves comparable to a mid 90-s F-series inline 6, and they still run smooth as silk 75 years later.

Hopefully VW Scout will see the writing on the wall and make it a hybrid. No serious off roader would consider a all electric 4 wheeler for overlanding or far out off-roading. Bringing the scout back would be great if it had solid axles front and back , and a modern efficient ICE which new computer controlled fuel injected ICE's are now , very efficient and very low emmissions . The many problems with electric vehicles (as the tech stands now) , such as range, range off road (running out of battery in the bush, can't plug into a tree and solar is a no go, again how battery tech stands now) and range during cold weather , infrastructure , pollution created from mining the raw materials, to make the batteries as well as generating the power to charge the millions of electric vehicles that potentially will be out there in the future , battery disposal and cost, not to mention the human cost of the horrific exploitation of cheap labour (child labour) to mine the materials off shore. No , it all sounds good but the tech isn't there yet , not by a long way , they keep pushing these electric vehicles and in some instances they are a good fit i.e.. running around town , then go home and plug it in , but then if everyone had one the grid would crash . And how about the battery fires that produce it's own oxygen and are very, very difficult to extinguish without the correct fire fighting gear.... Just to name a few. For an off road vehicle or heavy hauler or long distance on and off road tourer , as the technology stands now it is a no go. The powers that be are trying ram this down peoples throats before the tech is there or the grid-infrastructure. Should they keep working on alternate forms of power yes of course hydrogen is a good one , but as of this writing it just isn't there yet for electric. As I said ICE are very efficient and low, low emitters of pollution and they are getting better and better all the time . This is what engineers should be concentrating on , making the ICE as efficient as possible and continue to evolve it. Cheers Wild Bill Jeep overloading the remotest parts of northern Canada .

BEVs are not the way forward. It may be a fun goal but so is a flying car and warp drive. The reality is we do not have an electrical grid capable of supporting convenient BEV charging, battery technology is still too slow to charge, very fragile, and far too expensive for most peoples income. If you want to make toys for the very rich who will abandon them like Porsches in the desert of Dubai, be upfront about that. If it’s not a hybrid, don’t talk to me.
