Hi all 👋 Last week, we decided to reclaim more of our garden space by pulling out what had been hiding in the brambles all this time..... an abandoned fibreglass hull boat on a trailer.
But what didn't help was everything had seized up and it was full to the brim with backbreaking stuff.... so much so, we needed to get help.

I'd bin it but that's real life, for a UKpostsr that project would be great content with a good backstory. If you can restore it might be worth doing for the views.

That boat looks like either 1. a 15-part restoration series or - 2. fill it with soil and change it into a garden feature.

Vikki - unless you have a vision of using this fibreglass shed on land - I would give someone £100 to take it away, as soon as possible. To restore this boat so it is safe to to use at sea is going to cost you thousands and divert thousands of man hours. To use safely as an inland waterway craft is going to cost you slightly less but still many hundred of man hours. If it is your passion to get afloat there are much cheaper and less labour intensive ways of doing so. PS: After saying all of that you could cut off the deck and use it as a big grow bag - it has demonstrated its growing credentials already.😉🤣

Looks like 12 episodes of UKposts content on restoring the sailboat that will serve as income after you restore the property you bought at auction. Maybe special guest volunteers in vintage boat restoration? I know for sure that marine plywood boat DIY building is an enduring hobby that could draw like minded boat hobbyists that would not have otherwise visited your channel. I was recommended this video by UKposts because my history of visiting yachting and boat building related channels.

I've sailed all my life and owned many boats. Your boat is a great candidate for someone who has the time to restore her to her former glory. The restoration would be for love because, as others have said, its not economically viable. To buy a suit of sails for it would probably increase the value of the boat to half the cost of the sails! Loved the video of you extracting it though - thanks for sharing the experience with us.
@arnoldmonk6381

Hi Vicki, as a dream it would be great to take it sailing, in reality as others have said it will be a time eater and money pit, even as a garden feature. 😀Visit a marina or boat yard to see the number of unfinished projects which have been underneath tarps for years. Give it away, when you’ve finished the house and garden perhaps buy a boat. I admire your work ethic and enthusiasm.

If it was me, I'd make it into a garden feature. Plant blue and white flowers around the bottom to represent waves. I'd build a deck on the top with a few seats, side table and lighting so you and Mr TCD can enjoy warm evening relaxation and watch the sun set. I think it would cost thousands to restore it to the point of putting it on open waters.

Siphon the water out with a garden hose pipe just make the end of is lower than the submerged end, so quick..
@grahamtanner1066
@grahamtanner1066 11 днів тому
... or get/rent a submersible water pump. You have power to the boat (for your jetwash), and the pump usually comes with a very long flexible hose. It would clear the boat in about 15 minutes.

Our fmily owned a few fishing boats and occasionally one might get into trouble and get beached. to drain out any water that may have been shipped, we simply used a 3 meter length of 20mm poly pipe and siphoned the water out. It worked on one which was 65 ' long. it would be easy for you to do that and you can leave it there incase it gets another load of water. The siphon will work by itself .

Get yourself a decent pair of chainsaw gloves - the thorns won't penetrate the gloves. And don't forget the chain oil for your polesaw, the reservoir to oil the chain is very small and running a polesaw without lubricant will ruin it in no time.

So exciting to find a boat like that on your land, it's crying out to be restored! You are lucky to have plenty of space, so it won't cost you anything to store it for now. If it was me, I would dry it out, get a tarp over it and put it out the way for now, while you get to where you want to be with your other projects on the house and garden. You can take your time to decide if it is a project you want to take on and could always sell it much later on, if you decide against it.

If you really really want to use it in the future, dry it out and put a cover over it to store for a future project. If you don't really really want another boat give it away. It'll either cost you nothing or a huge amount :) Also..... tractor.... you know it'd have made moving the boat easy.....

As others have said, that trailer would be of great value to someone. If you try to pass on the boat but no takers... Cut the bottom off, or bury it a bit, and turn it into a garden sitting area. It can be your cheeky glass of wine on a summer night, dreaming of sailing the sea, without draining the coffers. Oh, and sell the trailer. If you bury it midway, you could even use the inside for when the weather is a bit inclement, but too nice to go back into the house. Treat yourself to a newer/better boat further down the line.

Nice find late sixties or early seventies ???? Hurley/ Kingfisher????? non too sure, will take loads of work to get it back, gel coat will need grinding off and replacing with epoxy. It could probably be sorted for around three grand, a set of second hand sails. If you decide to keep Get it covered build a shed over it. that way any work done will be protected, check for water blisters internally.. Done up she would be a fun little weekender

I would selll as a project boat... living near the Grand Union canal there are hulks up for sail that are in much greater need of repair than yours. That could be bought up and refurbed by people that are looking for home that cannot afford a narrowboat and will do the work themselves. I have a few acquaintances that went down this route and while living at home with family they got the boat water ready to their specifications. Their investment of money and time, like you did a lot of work themselves (indeed I remember a wood-trimming party in my garden where lots of timber was brought round and the mitre and table saw were fully used, I was paid in drinks which I could only consume after the event (I like my fingers)) and now they are building up savings to get a mortgage deposit together, which sadly seems an ever increasing target. The summer of 2022 was one of saw blades... and it was righteous.

The wood parts inside the boat is the mast and the mount for it. I would not be surprised if the holes on the mount(the thing like a 'TT' is the mount) match up with holes uyp top somewhere. That sailboat is built for open waters, yeah. Lakes preferably, but should be able to handle the sea, too. The keel is not just a counterweight for the mast, but modern sails have more in common with an aeroplane wing, and the sail/keel balances the boat similarly to the wings on a plane. Weird stuff, but fun. I can reccommend the book 'Sailing for Dummies'. Yes, it's a real book. And it's good. Whatever you do, DO NOT bury the boat hull anywhere. Fiberglass needs to be scrapped by professionals.

I am so jealous that your job is to can spend time on all these projects - i can only manage a snatched hour a couple of times a week, in between everything else. I would agree with other commenters that you should part ways with this boat - it cant be a priority for you with everything else on the farm! I don't think I'd even bother sinking it into the ground, the effort to do that vs just building more raised beds/a more spacious sitting place seems disproportionate.

The number of projects the house has produced is fun. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Boat might be a big project but if paced over a few years it maybe achievable. Content is content. It does seem like a nice size for a pleasure boat. Sailing more fun than motor to me.
@NickLea

At 25:10 you mention about it not being for a canal but for open water. But it does also have a British Waterways Board licence. I don't know where in the country you are (or, perhaps more relevant, where the former owners originally came from) but there are some places where you have canals with access to the sea. For example, on the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, at Sharpness marina there are both narrow boats and sailing boats like the one you found. There are locks at Sharpness so that you can enter the Severn and sail off. You will also see some quite large sailing yachts moored in Gloucester docks. But there again the Gloucester & Sharpness is more of a ship canal and is up to 25m wide. The other alternative would be the Norfolk Broads, but I don't know if they ever came under the British Waterways Board, I think that they may have always had their own authority running it.

There are two things you really don't want to have. First is someone giving you a boat, and the second is finding a boat on your property. Why you ask? Because I know first hand the tons and tons of work you will have to do to get it anywhere ready to serious use. Not only the cost of materials it will take, but the amazing number of hours and hours you will spend as well. Best thing to do is give it away or take it to the trash sight...
