As an Australian student currently in year 12, I have never heard of this red pen ban, all my teachers mark with red pen and I also have never seen anybody be upset about the colour of the pen. Plus, always being nice to students isn’t always going to help them, I’m not saying they should be rude, but always being positive or telling the student they did well isn’t going to help.

As someone who graduated school in Australia a couple years ago that red pen rule is absolute bs we get told we aren't allowed to mark in anything that isn't red and that you can't do your work in red. Red is literally designated for marking I've been yelled at for not using red. i think they fucked up their research and got it backwards

We had the red pen rule in our UK rule, and everything had to be marked in purple instead. The problem was, the cool kid bic 4-way pens were black, green, blue and red, and you had to use the red up somehow, so a lot of the graffiti in the toilets was done in red, so I'm not sure if it was the most sensible idea after all.

My high school I went to. (In the UK). The headteacher banned hugging (even when kids were upset/just a normal greeting for most kids). It was a massive talking point, it was even in the news. I gave a friend a hug who was crying and was told to stop. It was so dumb. He tried to ban the word Christmas and also had a red line going around the school yard. You had to ask to go to the bathroom.

One of the schools near me was considering placing a rule that you were not allowed to bring your phone to school, or else it would be given to the office. The more you broke the rule the longer the office would have it (sometimes including overnight) until smth happened (don’t remember what). If I remember correctly, I think they were talking about checking random students bags every morning to check if they brought their phone with them, and obviously people were upset about it. I think part of the rule got implemented and apparently students GPA’s improved so my school almost did it. We made a big fuss and argued and argued over things like needing to call parents or in certain emergency or health cases (blood sugar, medication, personal issues, appointment updates, etc.)., mentally disabled and neurodivergent students needing phones to communicate or deal with meltdowns, etc. We also kept telling the office staff that they’d be the ones dealing with the upset parents and time wasting calls, and they decided it wasn’t worth dealing with parents. I understand why schools would want to push for this (bc phones are addicting and distracting), but surely there’s better ways than fully banning them? Maybe having to put your phone in a bin or wall pocket thing for class, and if you needed it you’d tell the teacher? A rule for teachers that you’re not allowed to deny medical uses and updates?

In the English secondary school that I go to the no hands policy is a new thing, we’re not aloud to high five or hug or fist bump or pass things like scissors to each other. Personally it just makes school feel EVEN MORE like a prison and I can guarantee you when students want to fight they’re already breaking rules so another rule that prevents ALL physical touch full stop isn’t going to stop them.
