Over the course of the next decade, Unilever’s fragrance brand captured the teenage boy market with its provocative advertising. But it began to fall out of favor, and by 2022, domestic sales had fallen to an estimated $300 million, down from nearly half a billion dollars just ten years prior. Now Axe trying to compete with high-end fragrances… can it succeed?

Teenager here. We got bored of it and moved to designer fragrances like Versace Eros and Dior Sauvage. People in middle school still use it, but once I became a freshman I splurged on a designer fragrance collection.

I used Axe in middle school and throughout highschool. I never realized how much I hated the smell, was in my late 20's that I realized the smell of the boy's lockerroom was just Axe.

Yeah i remember trying a few as a kid and they were so different, i only liked one, which was called "Pulse" that green one. The others were nice too, but i liked this one the most. It's not even available anymore. Would be nice to smell that again.

I think part of their issue, is they were so big in middle schools/ High schools that when their core group matured or got burned out with axe and went on to other things Axe lost them. If Axe had another brand under a different name that was more sophisticated, had more mature scents and more reserved labeling, they could have kept those customers as they moved beyond Axe.

They could definitely do a do-over. See how effective Stanley's rebrand to target people who are keen on colorful drinkwares? Their sales sky rocketed. A rebrand in the right direction, with the right marketing and ads will definitely get them back in the game

I remember a co-worker wore the chocolate scent axe. Funny thing was, I worked at a movie theater. Customers thought he smelled like a candy bar. No kidding. I heard two ladies mention it to him.

Like, thanks for mentioning it, I try to smell like belgian chocolate in a professional setting, but if you want to get a drink after the movie, I have some refined dark chocolate infused with wine aroma that I keep in my car for special occasions 😏

I wouldn't tell someone they're 'not a real man' because they wear Axe, but the scent of Axe is *certainly* associated with teenage boys as that's their core demographic... So it makes sense it smells almost 'juvenile' to most people. It's worn by kids, or people who can't afford better... And I would know; because I was a poor kid who couldn't afford better and this was what I wore until I budgeted for actual cologne. Also not to mention be it that it is bottom shelf, budget cologne; it doesn't inspire much respect as a fragrance when it literally smells primarily like alcohol and artificial aromatics. I don't mean to sound pretentious, but I couldn't be caught dead wearing Axe outside of high school; it actually nauseates me from all the years I was fumigated with it in the boys locker room by people who couldn't be bothered to shower. By all means wear it if you want and if that's where your budget is at; but let's not pretend Axe is good cologne. It's cheap cologne for kids who don't shower and clearly wouldn't know what a good scent is; because they thought they smelt fine without a shower ☝

In India, axe is quickly replaced by a smaller brand called Fogg. Because axe is mostly filled with just gas, not actual deodorant. Fogg came in market with fully liquid cans with pump sprays. They quickly became market hit. Value for money 😅😊

Man, as a millenials who used to this tuff like most guys did in middle school and high school, i used to buy cans of these very frequently. I still remember when Axe introudced their Axe Dark Temptation line. That Chocolate fragrance smelled amazing in my opinion.

We have Lynx in the UK, which is the same as Axe. It’s horribly expensive now - so not many people buy it. Its used to be £1 or £1.50 a can before covid. Now its about £3.50 to £4.50

I'm in my 30s and have been a loyal Axe consumer since high school. It doesn't smell bad. People just think it does because many of its users are teenage boys who use it to replace showering and use way too much. If you just use it like a normal cologne, it smells really good.

Even in college, I really liked their body washes as it was nice to have a wash that gave you a little bit a lasting scent. Once I switched to cologne, I had to move on to something else since the scents would always clash

When I used to go to the gym a lot of young guys would cover themselves in Axe rather than take a shower. It was pretty unpleasant to be next to them when they were covering themselves with this stuff but it allowed them to hide behind a towel rather than take a shower.

I like Axe because it has a very long lasting scent and it's effective. I've never used it as a "shower replacement." But I LOVE using this when I go out to a nightclub dancing or big social event or a concert where I'm around hundreds or thousands of people. I always feel confident that I DON'T STINK when I wear it. I usually use a stick deo (from any brand) and then spray Axe as a "sealant" to lock in the deodorant and make it more long lasting When I do that, I can honestly go 36 hours and STILL smell fresh, even after 1+ long days of not showering. Also I don't like the smell of cologne on my skin, so for me it's a preferable replacement.

Honestly most teens I know today smell bad and when I tell them about using spray they insist that the chemicals are bad for them. They say soaps and sprays are bad for skin and smelling natural is healthier. Most teens I know today want to spend their money on "natural soap" like dr.squatch and such that have marketed to be anti chemical. The third reason is cost. A bottle of spray isn't cheap "at least for teens" that would rather buy a game or a phone. Their is also the argument that as more teens switch to homeschooling or online learning there is less interest in personal care. Schools are important ways for people to learn self hygiene and social skills, yet more people are doing online studies everyday this also effects sells of self care products.

I still use it at 24. I love the nostalgia. But only when I get out the sauna or post workout and do my errand before heading home to my shower. Gives me the confidence for those 25-50 minutes

A couple years back in my schools men’s locker room a football player had axe in his gym locker, to be granted this was the type of locker that had those diamond shape holes so you could see inside it pretty well. On the top shelf of said football players locker was where the small can of axe was. Some guys during a gym period decided to move the axe closer to the locker door so they can access it, and hold the spray until it was empty. It reeked of Axe for weeks. My nostrils will never be the same.

A lot of men's body spray/perfume today has that *"musky"* smell which I hate. When I wear a "perfume/fragrance," I don't want to smell like some dead animal. Also, by genetically, sometimes people (and some animals) tends to look for partners based on their smell. So adding that "musky" smell from other "male" animal may have blinded that sense of smell from genetically compatible partner.

I've got two cans of Axe hair control cream. They both work well and smell terrific. The 2 scents are subtle , clean and fresh. They work and smell equally to anything in a pro hair salon. FWIW, I'm not a middle schooler, I'm on Social Security.

In India, Set Wet was synonymous with hair gel and Axe was synonymous with deodorant. Every teenage guy in the late 2000s has used these.

when i was in middle school, my go to scent was essence. then about 10 years later, they came out with a scent called “night” and i had the body wash which was a white bottle. that was the best smelling scent i have ever come across. i don’t think i have seen it in stores in years :/ and the scent “clix” just brings back memories to a special someone that used to use that body spray when we were in school 🥲

Man I remember every boy in highschool using axe when it first came out! 😂 Those commercials were pretty good. Now as an adult I keep a can of axe in the car in case I want to do some groceries after a sweaty gym workout so that I don't offend anyone too much 😂

Idk if you know this, but full disclosure; you dousing yourself in Axe does not help with your scent. You're just 'scent layering' so it might sorta mask it a little, but to me (and most people) you just smell like cheap alcohol ridden cologne, *and ass* . Honestly unless you really offend; you were probably better off going as is or just showering beforehand🤷♂

What about some quick shower before leaving the gymn? Putting that crap on yourself really makes the illusion of bad marketing targeted to redneck type of people, not of smelling any better. This is like eating fish and chips and feeling cool about it. Plus you overspend by a lot.

When axe was at its peak in the early 2000s, I was entering college. I personally liked the brand's scents for cologne and deodorant, and still do because of it's affordability compared to luxury fashion houses. If they could find a way to rebrand themselves to older Millennials and Gen Y, I honestly think they could make a solid comeback as an essential personal hygiene product for young men ages 25-40.

I mean deodorant is deodorant. My fiancé and I still use it. I’m 35 and he’s 30, some people hate on me for using LYNX, but what’s funny is how many times those people who judge me for using it compliment me on how I smell and ask what I’m wearing 😂

I stopped using Axe after high school just because I thought it didn't smell that good. To me, no matter what the scent, Axe always had a sense of "staleness" or musk undertones to me. So as I got older I kinda thought of Axe as an entry fragrance for boys that didn't know what actually smelled good yet. That and also getting access to showers quickly through dorm life; don't need it.

As a child I remember tv ads for Hai Karate lol. In high school it was Brut which we overdid. At a parents night at the middle school the physical ed director implored parents to coach our boys to use less AXE because in high concentrations it was like nerve gas. I wish there was a cologne that smells like roasted coffee.

Mannnn I used to HATE when I was in middle and high school; the boys would spray soooooooooo much of this on them. Even though it smelled very good; Omg the smell was overpowering and gave me a serious headache. Hell I’m getting a headache just reminiscing about this body spray.

Dude I just got finished saying this to someone! A $120 bottle of Versace I bought 1.5/2 years ago is about half empty. If I was still buying Axe; I woulda been thru SOOOO many $8-12 bottles in the same period of time, but that's for a number of factors. Mainly that Axe is watered down with alcohol, and actual cologne is more concentrated so you use less to achieve the same results. So even if it's still more expensive to buy actual cologne; it's not as expensive as people think. At the rate I'm using it; I'm spending no more than $30-40 a year to not smell like cheap aromatics when I woulda spent about as much or more wearing Axe 🤷♂

It's either Anarchy , Phoenix , or Cool Ocean. All those have used the blue labeling mostly Phoenix because that's their signature scent that has been around for years.

When I was young, I worked at a gym. Our clients were on the older side. But we got reps coming through with products for younger people like smart water and axe. One massive box of axe got dropped off one day. It was hilarious. My boss told me to just take it. I used to go to parties with whole gift bowls of just axe as party favors

I forgot Axe made body wash. I had that as a kid. It came with this suction thing that you could stick anywhere which was pretty neat. I remember after gym class everyone would spray that stuff and it would be unbearable.

I was using Axe already in early 90s in Brazil. The best one was Axe Marine back then. Unfortunately, Marine probably doesn't exist anymore. But, I still use other Axe fragances available.

Depending on how i want to smell i'll get an Axe product. Dark temptation is my scent during October but my favorite body spray is Old Fashioned Smoke from Bed Bath and Vegas from Playboy
