Sadio Mane was intended to be a transformational superstar at Bayern Munich. An indication of the Bundesliga club’s “gravitational pull”. After all, he was one of the guaranteed starters in Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League & Premier League-winning Liverpool sides.
But 13 months on he is no longer in Germany. Why? What happened during Mane’s time in Munich? Seb Stafford-Bloor explains. Craig Silcock illustrates.

He played in 4 different positions and tactical systems over the season, the entire squad also had performance issues but because of the Sane incident (which is unexcusable), Mane became an easy scape goat for all the problems

@@currymanjunior3603I don't think you need excuses when a pure striker outperforms a wide player forced into a striker role. Especially not at Bayern who have some of the best feeder players in Kimmich and especially Müller. Choupo-Moting is far from a superstar, but he has spent a lot more time in the Bayern system so he knows where to go and when to go there.

The crazy thing for me is how both his value as a player and as teammate have changed so much over just 10 months. From a loved Liverpool player easily worth a 100 million. To being estimated at 40 million and being viewed as a locker room cancer due to the sane incident

@@olivertir2491 Nagelsmann had the difficult task to manage Bayern without Lewandowski who produced numbers that were unmatched and concistent and partially Neuer after the World Cup. Losing your captain and your best player will easily turn things upside down and that happend to Nagelsmann sadly. Still Salihamizic was the decider when it was about Mane going to Bayern and not Nagelsmann who would likely have signed someone like or simular to Lewandowski something Mane never was.

A Brown or Black player should always avoid Germany, specially Bayern they always scapegoat Black players. Mane was absolutely loved and respect at Liverpool. Klopp always protect his players like a father and Liverpool fans are best in the Premier League they always support their players and at Bayern look at people like Olivier Kahn, Nagelsmann they will always protect "one of their own" no matter what. It's very sad but it's true. Kahn is very racist.

I'm surprised you didn't discuss his obvious decline in terms of physical attributes. I cannot recall one single game for Bayern when Mane looked as explosive, pacy and energetic as during most of his time at Liverpool. What's more, it often looked like he lost his ability to beat the offside trap, and he scored multiple goals that were overruled because of it.

Go to the beginning of the video and an explanation you will see…. Playing 50+ games for over 3 seasons in a high intensity team like Liverpool will always come at a cost. Sarah too has lost some of those abilities. Chances he missed last season would be gobbled up 2-3 seasons ago

Klopp sold him for relatively low money. Klopp is very intelligent when selling players. Most don’t perform anywhere else. See Coutinho who ONLY worked with Klopp. He must have seen the decline coming from miles away

Mane will always be in the hearts of Liverpool fans for the crazy moments he delivered. He was one of the best for Liverpool. And also he is a very grounded human, never forgot who he is and where he came from. One of the last remaining few in todays sports world. Wish him all the best .

It must have felt so demoralizing to miss out on the World Cup this year when Senegal were predicted to actually be a dark horse with him on it. He seems to be dealing with a lot psychologically so I hope for the best. Still a Liverpool and African legend.

Players come and go, and he felt it was time to move on from a team where Salah was always the number 1 and where he had started to be played out of position to accommodate for the signing of Diaz. He is 100% a legend. No debate about it whatsoever.

1. Injuries. 2. He was played off position a lot. He just isn't a 9. 3. System didn't suit him. Dominant positional play rather than Gegenpressing. 4. Higher competition at Bayern. Literally a team with the three other world class wingers. 5. Team had a mediocre season overall. 6. Declining explosiveness due to aging.

Half of the first touches were horrible or he looses the ball immediately. You expect more from a „Star player“. The fight with Sane was the icing on the cake

1. He was played not in the best system 2. His timing somehow was very bad, oftenly offside 3. When he scored against Barca was the example how good is Mane at counter attack situation, which is not happen very often because Bayern's opponents usually choose to pqrk the bus, which is Mane failed to show he can win one on one or one-on-two situations

Mane is actually an inside forward on a decline. The only reason Klopp played him as a false 9 because to accommodate Luis Diaz and to get maximum output from Mane. At Bayern Munich, they tried to play him as a striker but failed, was mostly injured and got into fights with his teammates and manager. Hence the move to Bayern Munich didn't work out and got sold after one season.

It does rankle me that very little blame is put on Sadie Mane’s performances. It is true that he always seemed like a square peg in a round hole, trying to replace Lewandowski, but his physical decline was insane and his need his greatest attributes-his pace-became one of his worst weaknesses. In attempting to make up for his lack of pace, Mane tried to make smarter runs but just ended up offside again and again and again. It was awful. This was a player who needed to reinvent himself due to a sudden and rapid physical decline and utterly failed in doing so.

we already have sane, coman, gnabry, tel and our youth players for the wings. we needed to sell one winger to get kane. mane was the most obvious choice

He just didn't fit into the team and was the wrong signing last transfer window. They should have tried getting Kane a year ago for 100 million and the deal would have been a lot more worth it than now where it's a huge financial risk. Kane was already at the time the most reliable striker that could fill Lewandowki's role and his abillity to fit on every Team as a striker who can go deep makes him one of the most desireable players but Brazzo (Salihimizic) had control over the transfers and not Nagelsmann sadly. Other options would have been a still in form Cristiano Ronaldo who would probably only have one more season in him just like at Old Trafford and wasn't the kind of player Bayern wanted to sign or Karim Benzema who has the right player mindset and style but someone who would have never left Madrid if it wasn't for the utopian deal from saudi. Kane has a good age for 5-6 seasons at the Allianz Arena, the right playstyle and the right mentality and therefore was always the perfect archetype of a player for the bavarians.

The Bayern move will not tornish Sadio Mane's Legacy, His time at Southampton especially with that quickest Hattrick in the PL, His time at Liverpool was truly successful A UCL and a Prem titles and stepped up when Salah was scoring at times and lastly, winning the AFCON with Senegal for their first ever with the last penalty. I still believe he deserves another big move, but for what he's given to football I'm more than okay with him and the Saudi Money

Klopp's system makes them reach their physical limit and also look better. Other clubs don't have that system so a player that is used to it feels lost. Also age and injuries.

Klopp's style of play is very physically demanding, so the legs are gone by the time the players get sold. Look at Mane, Fabinho and Henderson. Look at how bad they were in their final season at Liverpool. Their fall off didn't start after leaving Liverpool.

Good managers make the best of players' skillsets. It's the same with Pep. How many times have we seen players leave liverpool/city and not be as good as they were (mane, coutinho, cancelo, sterling etc) and how many times have we seen liverpool/city pick up average or good players and make them great or world class (salah, stones, akanji, gundogan etc). Don't be surprised when nunez and kovacic both have huge seasons down the line aswell

In my opinion Bayern didn’t think this transfer through. As good as Mane is on the pitch he’s not a Superstar off it and I think that Bayern put a lot of pressure on him to do that. You could see that he never settled into the Bayern lifestyle and I don’t feel that he made a connection to the fans that the board expected him to have, to the club’s credit they did show him a lot of love especially in the beginning but it wasn’t a great fit for both parties

Additional context: The Mane Bayern had signed was actually well past his peak, a 1 v 1 terror for defenders who could create and finish. Liverpool sold him at the right time, as his value would've plummeted. By 21-22, he wasn't really that much of an individual threat anymore. In the fall, Mo Salah was in the form of his life and Jota was also scoring freely, so it went mostly unnoticed that Mane had a streak of around 8-9 games without a goal. Then after AFCON, Liverpool had signed Diaz (who was meant to be Sadio's eventual replacement anyways). Diaz brought the kind of dribbling and individual threat that the LW needed, which allowed Klopp to move Mane in the middle as sort of a CF role. This also worked out since both Firmino & Jota had injury issues. Now he could just wait for chances from either the wingers or fullbacks to come his way and simply finish them. It's amazing that if not for a few inches and Courtois' fingertips, Sadio Mane would've scored the winner in a CL final, won Liverpool a treble, and likely himself the Balon D'or last year.

he picked up an injury in December 2019 & was never the same since. 2019-2022 Sadio Mane was a top quality player but could often look indifferent, if not completely gassed out; 2015-2019 Sadio Mane was a force of nature.

@@tubeofpoo2421 im inclined to disagree with you because in 2021/22 season we nearly got the quadruple, and mane was an integral piece of the puzzle, he was milimetres off scoring in the champions league final had it not been for a courtois masterclass. people will look at 19 and how we won the pl and say that was our peak, but if city didn't exist then mane would've been a key component in us dominating england at the very least, so I think to say he was falling off since 2019 is an exaggeration at the very least

Brilliant for us , he lived near by so used to see him around , really nice fella 😊. Past his best when he left though sad ! The club did very savvy business I thought , both signing him and his transfer to Bayern , when he signed for us he was 24 , gave us extreme pace in behind trickery and goals frightening good , at 30 he was a spent force unfortunately 😞. Transition has to happen .

It would be interesting to see how the drive to make big money transfers and the motivations of agents to generate large cuts from themselves, create situations where plays like Mane ultimately really suffer on the pitch. There's likely in many of these cases, interest from clubs who might suit the player better on the pitch without being a high profile a move, or offering the same financial reward.

i think it was somewhere around half of 20/21 season when his goal celebration changed to less enjoyable and he also had some incident with Klopp. Handled being in Salah's 'fame shadow' for years. Even that he played great and LFC felt his absence hard after he left. Unfortunate decision to leave LFC.

As a Liverpool fan I miss the prime mane with firmino and salah but there were a few occasions where he would be subbed off for not making enough of an impact and the attitude he showed klopp on live TV was so bad , I knew one day it what eventually bite him on the butt, still wish the best in his career! I bet he's very happy In a haram league

For me between 2017-2020 sadio was the best footballer in the world. For some reason things went wrong after he got substituted in game at crystal palace (december 2020 and 0:7 win) which he didnt like at all

I watched all Bayern games the year before he was signed. I wasn't sure why they signed him since he is not a striker and Bayern already have plenty of wingers. It was destined to failed.

He went from a close-knit club that had worked hard together to win to a club in trouble at the board level, to a squad which is used to being handed the title, and to a manager out of his depth that didn't understand why he worked at Liverpool. Feel like I also need to point out that everyone at Bayern was mediocre at best last year.

I don't think its all his fault he was a bit of a flop. He played as a striker and had to wait in the box until the ball came. At Liverpool he had more freedom sometimes playing as a false 9 or as a winger to create and score goals

You don’t mention how he was received by the Bayern players overall. I’m sure that played a part in it. I know this year they were astounded at the money Kane is being paid. But, although they won’t win the league this season, Bayern have desperately needed Kane’s goals and he has delivered.

He was approaching the end of his peak when joining Bayern, also they needed him as a striker (or lone number 9), which he clearly isn't. So at the end this good player was a tactical and personal missmatch for the team. Big Bayern L, since they struggle to sign top class players in the last years, due to financial restrictions, relegating the Bundesliga to a place to develope future talents and not to have the peak of your career as a player.

He was great at Liverpool but not at Bayern. Choupo-Moting was better than mane as a 9 so he's the second choice there and since they want to upgrade there he would be the third choice striker. On the wings he's behind Coman, Sane and Musiala should Müller play as a 10. Btw he was the highest earner at Bayern and would have been either a third choice striker or he would have competed with Gnabry to be the 4th choice winger. And Gnabry had a bad year last season too Mane wouldn't even be a guranteed bench player

He went from being under appreciated at Liverpool to being unappreciated at Bayern. It affected his mood, body language and consequently his form. The injury didn’t help either. Racism played a big role to his exit. The media was biased against him, his own teammates were on his neck and the board failed to protect him. We will never judge Sadio by his one year stint at Bayern.

He depended more on his explosiveness , we saw the very best of it with Liverpool , he was not tall but had a good spring him , due to him being explosive and best example of his explosiveness and strength can be seen in his debut goal for Liverpool. Unfortunately , he lacks the technical side of the game , he understood his role in Liverpool also his physical attributes helped him way too much , he's not like Mo Salah , physically both are great but Mo has a sharp brain which can compensate when his body might start to decline. Mane has lost his explosiveness and he's on the decline , that's what happened , his 2nd last season at Liverpool we could see that and last season with LFC we saw Luis Diaz , going in the RW which gave Mane less dependency on his physical powers , his Focus remained on getting in goal scoring postions . He was world class with LFC , especially first 3 seasons , unfortunate to see his decline
