Your problem is not gluten, it's the other additives that are banned in Europe, if your problem is bread specific, the problem is much more likely potassium bromate. There are more than few of those, like fructose (high fructose corn syrup) can trigger pretty serious effects in some individuals (respitory problems/blue lips/circulation). Similar ingredient and quality aspects can affect a lot of different products. Being allergic to gluten is quite rare (coeliac) and your arse will definitely tell you if you had any if you are actually allergic. Potassium bromate is used in flour as "improving" agent that makes it rise faster and makes the bread springier, it is banned in Europe and in the US it is an ingredient that must be labelled. Give it a try (meaning avoid and read labels).

So true. For nearly 3 decades I kept getting the GERD/heartburn/etc. Seemingly everything caused it. Had an upper GI done and they saw the inflammation. Since it was 30 years ago, I can't remember what they said, aside from just giving me the pill of the year back then and sent me on my way. I hated taking the pills and just stopped, opting for antacids instead. I did take trips out of the US over that time, but it wasn't until I spent a month in Australia that I realized I didn't have any reflux. And when I came back to the US it started up within a couple days.... my next trip down under, I paid closer attention.... and finally came to the realization it was the HFCS and a fructose intolerance causing the whole thing. And since HFCS is prevalent in everything unless you look, it was sure as heck causing my reflux! I cut it out completely and for 4 years (my last trip to Aus was 2019) I've been symptom free. I'll be one to tell you that the USA food regs are rubbish, pushed by lobbyists to further their agenda, in this case HFCS and other highly processed trash.

It sounds like the gluten might not be the problem for you, but rather some of the additives that are used in bread. You could try to see which additives have been fine for you here in Finland (look for the E-codes in the packaging). Once you get back to the States, try to add products one by one to your diet and see which additives the product has that gives you symptoms. I'm allergic to certain additives but I can consume some amount without noticable skin symptoms.

Reverse culture shock is a thing! I lived in France for half a year and when I came back to Finland it was so weird 😅 “These people speak my language OMG” “That’s not how you do it in France” 🤣

Once I was in Amsterdam on a camping site with my girlfriend. Suddenly heard some finnish guys speaking finnish. Then I asked something in finnish, they were like "what? Does someone speak finnish here? Oh my god!" After that we had a feq beers at a local restaurant.

It is even worse, when you have lived outside of your country so long and realize you are totally out of the contemporary culture loop and can't really chat or even identify with those topics at all anymore. This was especially bad for me as an introverted engineer who was already at the fringe edges of social-fluency While you understand every word they are saying, you don't really get or care about anything they are talking about

To be fair it's pretty hard not to live near water in Finland anywhere. Also I doubt it is by happenstance that the Finnish immigrants to US chose to live near the great lakes.

Yeah, Finnish (well Nordic in general) candy is something quite different compared to most other parts of the World (the US and Asia in particular), and not only are there are so many option that you get stun-locked (even as an adult) by the difficulty of choice, but there are also a lot of extremely healthy and diet specific options as well (options like sugar free, only natural ingredients/dyes, gluten free, lactose free, xylitol options etc) When I lived in Japan (several times) not having access to Finnish candy was almost as hard as not having access to Finnish rye bread, and were always at the top of the list when requesting items to be send to me from Finland in *survival boxes* by my parents 9:30 Oh my dear, that is called a telltale symptom of ADHD, you might want to check out if you have more of them. Untreated, it can be the source of lot of chaos in our lives, that can be either fixed/mitigated by simple tricks or in more severe cases by medication. I have personally found that sound-cancelling headphones with Nightwish blasting in them can really help you with that distraction thing when going back to the States, they have helped me so much with my adhd in similar situations when I don't want to get pulled into those distractions. Why Nightwish you might ask? because not only is it the best and most successful Finnish band in history (just facts), their compositions are so complex, engaging energetic, thought provoking and most importantly uplifting. Your brain won't go into the idle observation mode as easily for you to start paying that too deep attention to other people around you talking/gesturing (apart from paying enough attention to not walk under a bus)

Have youmthought about that maybe your skin’s better in Finland due to doing sauna regurlarly? It boosts circulation, detoxifies and has been the “secret” beauty treatment of the Finns for centuries. And gluten is gluten everywhere, so thinking that American gluten would somehow act differently than Finnish, sounds illogical to me… 🤔

It's been interesting following your journey! Life gives us different experiences and it will continue to give us experiences for a long time and you always learn something from them! I've been watching many similar videos and many points are similar to those that others have experienced (gluten-food seems to be something that everyone experiences, and unfortunately the situation seems to get back to the way it was in US back in there. Another one is public transportation that everyone always says). Lack of understanding is interesting, as it is something I've also experienced while traveling (I mean I guess everyone does), but I don't think that being distracted by other conversations or juggling many different things in mind simultaneously is something that everyone does o.o . Just trying to say that this sounds a bit like ADHD or something like that, which might be a good thing to be aware of. And it would be interesting to see what reverse culture shocks USA brings to you, that's a good topic for a video! Btw did you get to visit other countries in Europe in your first travel outside of US? And how different do you think US and Finland are?

I totally get your longing for the sea. Ive always thought seeing the vastness, even if its frozen, reminds me how small I am, how insignificant my problems really are. Like the sea will be here tomorrow too, everything is kinda ok, quit mulling in your misery. It has the same effect as watching the stars at night, its just soothing & reaffirming 🤷‍♀️

I had the opposite experience than you with enjoying to not being able to understand peoples conversations in public and being able to focus more. I am a Finnish expat living in NL but I don't speak Dutch. I hate that I can't understand conversations or street signs etc when I am in NL. I am now on vacation back in Finland and love being at home where I can understand everything.

The last item on your list is very interesting to me. When I moved to Finland I kind of switched off trying to understand but that was not very useful because actually after a while you do understand bits and pieces if you really think about it. It is like being a child again. We adults all behave as though kids understand everything we say to them because we do get some useful interaction but actually they really don't understand everything. I used to be totally frustrated by the fact that I didn't understand people after moving here. But like with kids don't worry. It just takes time. Sorry to hear that you are leaving tho.

Tosi outo! Muutin suomeen noin viistoista amerikasta. It literally sounds like the same few sounds repeated over and over and over again, the brain quickly tunes it out until individual sounds can be distinguished. My ear couldn’t hear the differences in the words. Tuli, tuuli, tulli all sounded the same. “Kokko, koko kokkoko?” it was impossible to distinguish the words. I thought Finns had to be psychic, that can’t possibly be a language I’m hearing.

I'm surprised safety and honesty was not on the list. I flew into Helsinki with my daughter. We hopped on the train from the airport up to Riihimäki. In Riihimäki, I left a briefcase with my computer, passport and a couple Christmas gifts on the train. The train left back to Helsinki before I got back to the station. I thought goodbye to that bag after 20 stops and thousands of people. My wife and a friend, both Finnish, were sure I would get it back. Sure, enough a week later at National lost and found I got my bag back everything in it. You will not get that in any American city I know. Also, women walk alone freely at night everywhere I know about in Finland. Puhun vähän suomea. Kun puhun suomea ihmisille Suomessa, he puhuvat minulle monta kertaa englanniksi. On sama kaliforniassa kun minä puhun espanjaksi ihmisille kuka puhuu espanjaa he puhuvat minulle englaniksi. Minä oli iloinen jos suomalaiset ymärävät etta minä puhuin suomeksi 🙂
