In this text, Christian explains the difference between complex and complicated systems using examples from daily life on the farm in Sundhult.
The first type of system, the complicated ones, are described as predictable and governed by clear parameters, like a computer or an engine where the input yields an expected output.
On the other hand, complex systems are illustrated as ecosystems or human relationships where many variables interact, and the outcome is more challenging to predict.
While complicated systems are more linear and controlled by clear rules and parameters, complex systems are more dynamic and have their own will that cannot be easily predicted or controlled. To make decisions in complex systems, we use Holistic Management in Sundhult, which is a framework for navigating uncertain and complex situations.
Examples include how different decisions on the farm, such as using various methods of land use, can lead to unexpected consequences and how people interact with each other in a similar manner.
Holistic Management is used to make better decisions, even though they are not always entirely correct, with the goal of achieving more sustainable and efficient management of the farm and its ecosystem.
