To me, as an individual who was professionally diagnosed a year ago with Anti-Social Personality Disorder, I fall into the sociopath category. Mass trauma resulted in how I began to see people. I was not born this way but my environment and life experiences influenced my brain’s “programming”. Nothing about ASPD is fun. It’s not cute, it’s not quirky, and it is NOT a term to be thrown around. It is a real disorder that real people have and impacts our lives heavily. We do not operate in the way movies portray us. We do not fit into molds. We are people just like you. We just live differently.

thank you for commenting this. people living with less "palatable" mental disorders like ASPD still face a lot of stigma. typical internet mental health awareness activism focuses on slapping the same regurgitated points about depression and anxiety on a pastel background and calling it a day, when there's still so much work to be done in informing people about psychotic and personality disorders and examining why they've become so demonised in our society. much love to you. i hope you're doing well.

If anything, it might leave them more open to potential abuse. Also, the difference between psychopath and sociopath is not universally agreed upon by medical professionals (though there are people who appear to have APD because they were born that way or experienced brain damage, versus those who experienced abuse and perhaps had some genes that inclined toward the development of cluster B personality disorders)

But watching something like this or being educated yourself just shows how wrong it was of him, someone who does not have a degree in psychology, to make a whole web series deciding whether or not a man was a sociopath. @@sophw8780 This is one of those cases where the root of the word gives its definition pretty well. Keep this in mind as a basic explanation: Sociopath - the actual pathology originates in/from society, hence "socio" Psychopath - the pathology originates in the individual's functions/brain, hence "psych" It goes far deeper than that, but those are the guidelines my peers and I were given when we started down the psychology path.

You clearly missed that the actual host is a manipulative sociopath/psychopath with some other possible comorbid psychological disorders. It's all over his facial expressions and his eyes. If you look closely you will see that not a single thing he does is genuine. It's all an act and he has a crazed sort of stare throughout that is typical but difficult to explain. Ironic given the subject matter. If you didn't notice it at all, look forward to a long career of failure in psychology.

You can be into true crime books/tv/movies/books/podcasts more than the average person (or even normal fan) & still not be a psychopath. I believe sense of guilt or remorse in general is a LARGE factor in diagnosing someone. While social, lifestyle choices, & interpersonal feelings are part of it, guilt & remorse reaches all categories & can ultimately judge the character & psychopathic tendencies of each person on a scale of “normal” to threatening. That is what most true crime buffs are into... the psychology behind the person who committed the acts. The more crazy/horrid the acts, the more interesting the person & psychology behind it

this definition of sociopathy is so interesting. it really explains how societal conditions result in the violence caused by people like dylan roof, but also aileen wuornos. our society fosters deep seated racism that leads to racist hate crimes, and it also fails girls over and over again which traumatizes them to the point of enacting violence. it goes both ways

@@anika8108 tbh i don't think we can know that she was or wasn't a sociopath. and the thing is, there are lots of people with sociopathic traits like no empathy, narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, etc, that live fairly normal lives and never kill anyone lol. sociopathy is about the conditions that lead someone with those traits to kill, usually multiple times. we'll never know the entirety of wuornos's mental health situation, but we do know that her position in society and treatment by others drove her to kill, and that's the same for dylan roof. that said, aileen wuornos is not like dylan roof in any other way and i agree that she should not have gotten the chair.

One can have far more traits when in one mood and far fewer traits when in another. I agree that checklist is definitely a tool but there are many more tools in the box that are needed in diagnosing someone. But that checklist is only that. A tool. I've been kind of struggling with some BUN vids and the sensationalizing of some material. This vid is SO good in the amount of research, conversation with the expert, portrayal of quotes, and respect and honesty of not wanting to skew the topic in to inacurate entertainment. I loved this! Recently I started listening to a podcast about cults (Cults) and it's been kinda fascinating to see how the hosts handle mental health when it comes to the cult leaders. Yes, these cult leaders were incredibly destructive and warped a lot of different ideas to fit their agendas, but they don't seem to notice or acknowledge how their less than fully critical choice of words and framing can perpetuate violence towards those with mental illness & trauma. I'm still listening to their earlier episodes from several years ago so perhaps there is some growth in that department, but I think this video is really good to help reframe a lot of the conversations that happen not just in the podcast but about cults in general. Also, I just really love all of Matt's videos, he always comes in with an interestingly balanced open and critical perspective.

as a criminology and criminal psychology student this video is gold! could talk about this for hours but just to add, this also ascribes to labelling theory in crime and the fact the term psychopath/sociopath in itself should be redefined given that many people in society share this characteristics (either because we are adapting to a more capitalist driven society obsessed with success or whatever the reason) and not all of the people with this characteristics are killers or even criminals but they do have no empathy or remorse and they manipulate to get their way, they could be sadistic in an emotional sense... like the whole term is conceptually wrong then or at least, as a whole in normal basis is used wrong and in academic ones, still should be explored more as of now, we do not know enough I think. anyways, this video was amazing. I loved Matt to the max already, but this video has just unveiled a NEW max... He is just so great

My sister was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder about 2 years ago, and while she was never officially diagnosed with it, I still think she's a psychopath. She would wait until my parents left the house and we were alone to target me, physically when we were younger, then emotionally as I got bigger. I still tell people about the experiences I have had living with a psychopath, and the long-term affects of it being that I have severe anxiety, depression, and paranoia. I hate it when people call others psychos just because they were being dramatic or a jerk. It is a term used much too loosely, because the scary thing is, if you ever met an actual psychopath, you'd probably never even know.

@lilianag7092
@lilianag7092 3 роки тому
I myself am not a doctor but have been professionally diagnosed with Anti-Social Personality Disorder roughly a year ago. I never really thought much of if I had a personality disorder but knew that I treated people differently from what was ‘normal’. As a classified sociopath, my disorder formed through extensive trauma I experienced throughout my childhood. I can feel emotions just fine. However, they are not as strong as others. I can form relationships and love. However, many of my relationships are based what I can gain. It’s very complex and definitely impacts my day to day life. Psychopaths on the other hand, are generally numb. They are born with a chemical imbalance that causes them to lack emotion and instead fake them. They will hurt others just for the sake of hurting them. There isn’t really a direct cause for them to be this way. Trauma can make it worse of course but it’s just there by default. I find that notion unsettling even as some with the disorder. There are high functioning examples of both. Those who have not ended up in prison but instead have successful careers and apparent relationships. I hope this helped and I’m sorry it’s so long but I felt it best to be as detailed as I can. Again, I can only speak for how ASPD impacts me. It’s different for each person.

I have problems with empathy, due to trauma, lack of trust in relationships. I can be impulsive, aggressive, be hot and cold. If I don't see future in you you are out of my life. I am missfit, due to many effects of anxiety trough my 20 something years of life. I have empathy, but it scares me, so I avoid too much stimulus: the darkest my emotions are the numbness grows.

We're human not machines, and we work differently. It's how life shapes us, how our parents raised us and the way our minds work in every sort of experience. People can influence even if they didn't intend to do it, it has that sort of effect. Each day of my life I kinda analyze it bit, but I can be a bit of rude teenager. I don't think good and bad would ever end, I think it's inevitable. Even if one, keeps those emotions inside, eventually if you open up you'll feel them and not keeping them hidden inside.
