Hello Jacob, I really like your videos and find them truly educative. I can mention just one hint for the viewers to improve my and ours experience from this. It is the music, after watching like 3 videos after each other I find that my brain would appreciate more easygoing and soft music...or you can change the podcast music to a different one the same color, if you know what I mean. Thank you like that a lot. LP

It would be nice to see router wired to switch and some of the other stuff you mention, Is it just one cable between router and switch ??
@NexGenT
@NexGenT 6 років тому
Yes routers and switches simply connect to each other via Ethernet over Cat5e or Cat6 cable.
@NexGenT

Hey Jacob, great stuff! Quick question though. Because these routers can route your LAN traffic and essentially to the internet, does that internet connection or WAN connection have much config to it since it's just used to go out to the web? Not sure if that made sense, haha
@NexGenT
@NexGenT 6 років тому
Hi Chris! Thank you for the compliment and also for the question. To start, there are multiple pieces of configuration that will be needed on a router to setup a WAN connection to the internet. I will list those steps here shortly, however I wanted to note that in home routers and SOHO routers these things are already configured and set up by default. So, for those type of routers there is little to no configuration needed out of the box unless you need to open up some TCP ports for forwarding or something like that. Anyhow, here are the steps of things that need to be configured on a router to connect to the Internet. On the Internet/WAN interface set up the following: 1. An IP address and Subnet Mask - from the public subnet provided by your Internet Service Provider. This IP address needs to be manually configured on the router unless you (and the ISP) are doing DHCP on the public side. Most residential internet services use DHCP for this, but business grade internet connections usually do not and must be manually configured. In addition to setting the IP address and subnet mask you also must remember to turn the interface on. On Cisco routers all the interfaces are turned off by default and you have to do a "no shutdown" command to turn them on. 2. A Default Route (aka Gateway of Last Resort) - the default route is a route to all unknown traffic. We point the default route out to the ISP next hop (next router) IP address. We do that because the destinations on the internet are all unknown to our router (unless our router does full routing table BGP peering on the public internet). So, when our router receives an IP Packet to a destination network that it doesn't know about it will send it to the ISP router. This is because the upstream routers at and beyond your ISP have routes for the entire internet in their routing tables and they will know where to send it to get to Google's server IP addresses for example. Home and soho routers already have a default route in place, well... by default! In an enterprise grade router though it's up to you to configure it! 3. Network Address Translation (NAT) - more specifically PAT aka NAT overload or NAT hide. This is needed to translate your internal IP Address pool into your globally routable IP address that lives on your router's public interface that faces the internet. The full NAT configuration on a Cisco router has multiple parts and pieces, but on home/soho routers it's already setup in accordance with the default private network that comes preconfigured. 4. Access Control List (ACL) + Stateful Firewall - here again with home/soho routers this is defaulted to block incoming traffic and allow outgoing connections. With most business/enterprise grade routers and even firewalls an ACL needs to be applied to block inbound traffic from the internet and then stateful Firewall inspection rules must be put in place to allow the specific traffic you want to be able to leave your network and come back in. That may have been more info than you were expecting, but it is pretty thorough!
@chrismendez3415
@chrismendez3415 6 років тому
Haha, not a problem. The more info the better for me. Thanks for explaining this though. I kinda was "lost" on the business side of the routers and what was involved as far as ultimately getting out on the web. This makes perfect sense. Thanks for explaining this! #levelup

If the porpouse of having two LANs is that they shouldn't communicate each other, but at the same time both LANs need access to Internet and the only way is connecting both to a router, but now both LANs can communicate each other, but this is contradicting the porpouse of been separated, I'm confused.
@NexGenT
@NexGenT 6 років тому
17TheVIP both LANs can also communicate with each other through the routing process if we allow it.

Since it seems like he is talking about layer 2 switches, They will need to be trunked together so that they can talk to each other and access the internet.

A ROUTER and an internet MODEM ..... What's the difference between them ?
@JJFlores197
@JJFlores197 2 роки тому
A modem is a device that connects your router to your provider's network. Think of it as a bridge that links two places together. A router allows you to connect to other networks. It routes IP packets to and from their source and destination. Most home internet providers will sell/rent/give you a combo unit which includes a modem, router, and wifi access point in one box. They may call it a gateway or other fancy marketing name.
